Indeed we can see how good he was when we see Raikkonen (which was considered as one of the very best last year) compared to Massa and that we remember how MS was last year compared to the same guy ...

I think that Alonso is the closest we can find of Mickael S. He arrive in McLaren and win at the second race while the car wasn't reputed to be the fastest. Not that I like him ( I prefer Raikkonen) but I reckon he is impressive and a damn good and complete driver !!

He is virtually unreplaceable. Goes to show that if Ferrari has a strong car, Kimi and Massa can do well in it. On the other hand, if Ferrari has a weak car and needs team leadership to bring the various forces to work together - they are fucked now. :(

I honestly didn't see Kimi nursing the engine, that IMHO was all bunk reports.... he was pretty much always right up on Hamilton through the enitire race... it was just annoying that the lineup before the first pits is basically how the race ended.... no brilliant stratagies, no amazing passes... Alonso had an amazing start, but nothing to set him asside as the MS of today. I just don't think there is a professor to fill that gap in F1 today.

Massa.... I dono man... I just don't know. I think he is able to put it all together, but he doesn't have the consistancy race to race, or sometimes even lap to lap... i mean.... look at his qualifying... wayyyy faster then alonso, but we didn't see that Massa once in the race.

Kimi was in the 1'38" -1'39" range for most of the race whether in clean air or not. Its only in the last few laps that he turned the wick up and was in the 1'37" range trying to harry Hamilton into a mistake. Clear indication to me he was nursing the car till the last bit when the engineers must have told him to increase revs.

Also in his interview he mentioned he didnt have the speed of Felipe to overtake. Another hint that he was not dealing with a full deck of cards

Those two mistakes of Massa on the same corner really made me disappointed with him. That latin temperament will spoil the chances of ferrari in the coming races..

Kimi Raikkonen blamed compromises made to his Ferrari through the weekend to merely get him to the end of the Malaysian Grand Prix as the reason why was not able to challenge for victory against McLaren.

Indeed, there had been well publicised concerns throughout Ferrari this weekend about the strength of Raikkonen's engine following his water leak at the end of the Australian Grand Prix, but these proved to be unfounded when he came across the line in third position.

Nonetheless, third place was not what he and many had predicted prior to the race, the Finn admitting the race failed to live up the expectations his dominant display in Melbourne had suggested.

"A day of mixed feelings," he said. "On the one hand I am happy to have picked up six points, on the other, I am disappointed that the race did not live up to my expectations. This weekend we had to make some compromises on the car and that meant we were unable to exploit its full potential. Today we lacked a bit of speed when up against our main rivals.

Raikkonen however is remaining sanguine about his day, adding this result occurring at the beginning of the season means the team can learn from their mistakes and come strong again for the next round at Bahrain.

"I repeat that I'm a bit disappointed but I am also aware this is just the beginning of the season and that these points will definitely be important for the championship as it evolves. The team did a good job, given all the uncertainties we had. We have to try and improve to get one hundred percent out of all the elements of the package."

Agree. And I hate to say this - but the spaniard is the best driver on the grid right now. And a serious candidate to become the first driver ever to win his 3 first world titles in a row.

Emmo and Mario are awesome drivers but their best is way behind them. Their last win in a competitive series involving younger drivers is in the mid 90s when they were 50.

Look at GP Masters - a former champion like Alan Jones couldnt start the race because his neck couldnt take the strain. Taking a 4g strain is no joke.
This is one of the reasons that GP Masters runs with a reduced number of laps (26 laps vs 60 laps for a F1 race) to help the drivers cope.

Put Emmo or MArio in today's F1 car and we would be pleasantly surprised at how fast they can go but then ask them to do 50 laps consecutively and they won't be able to take it.

IMO after a certain age - mid 30s for instance(a few exceptions exist), open wheel drivers will gravitate to sports car racing where things will happen a lot slower and with lower g forces.

Schumacher could make F1 comeback - Hakkinen
Mika Hakkinen ruled out returning to Formula One but said his friend, former rival and fellow multiple world champion Michael Schumacher could be back on the grid in "two or three years".

The Finn, who left the sport at the end of 2001 but is today a Mercedes-Benz racer in Germany's DTM touring car series, recently tested for his former team McLaren, but to the newspaper Welt played down speculation that he could be preparing to return to F1.

38-year-old Hakkinen, however, insisted that he thought the similarly-aged Schumacher would probably find it as hard as he did to lose the desire to simply race.

"It will take him two, three years before he starts to think about coming back," Mika, who recently appeared on a TV tribute for Schumacher's career alongside the German and gifted him a unicycle, predicted.


Hakkinen also raced a go-kart with Schumacher on the tribute show and had arranged a personalised plaque for his unicycle which read: 'To Michael - my great rival and friend'.

Referring again to seven time world champion Schumacher, he said: "I believe Formula One would not be the only option open to him -- perhaps he would also think about DTM, or something else. Racing is racing."

Hakkinen insisted that a few years of retirement would not make it impossible for a former driver to return to the pace, even in Formula One.

"With talent, experience and above all ambition, it can be done," Mika added.
