Are you looking for performance or portability?
We're using the HP Business lineup where I work. They are pretty solid machines that I would recommend. NC8440, 15.4" Wide, ATi FireGL, 2GB Ram, 7200rpm HD.
or NC2400 12" Wide, Intel Graphics, 1gb Ram, 5400 rpm HD
:wink: not a mac guy here (gay fashion queen).. i'm a windows dude :wink:
since this will be my main and only system, its gonna have to be a bad ass one (gaming and what not..).. the one i'm looking into now is the Alienware's M5790 (I know the M9750 is coming out but the price has no justification..) was thinking of getting it with the good screen (WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD) Vista HP and a DVD±RW, the rest bone stock, with upgrading in mind, as i could easy upgrade it for much less.. my one concern with laptops (here is my lack of knowledge in this world) is the GPU upgradeability, the whole MXM thing i dont get.. and what card can i connect to what, and even where to get it.. mem, HDD and CPU are very easy on this laptop, and the price seems good,
so I would love some info\links about this kind of stuff, cause i hate to get into these things blind :wink:
PS- upgrades i was looking into are:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111301
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146125
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822146053
PSS- i'm not in that much of a rush, I only need it in a month or two, and i guess even then i could live for a few weeks (!! i can try!) without a pc..
and please tell me if you have another\better idea..Rock and Flacon NW aren't worth the (extra) money.. from what i saw..
edit-
the M5790 with the newegg parts comes to ~$2020
and i have the parts i'm replacing to sell.. what i'm really unsure of right now is GPU upgrade MXM I, II, III etc (hu?), and I definitely dont want to spend too much on a DX9 card.. and with a DX10 coming within the next month or so from what i know, i can wait and live with the X1800 till a DX10 is out and priced right..
the M5790 with those parts from Alianware comes to ~$2180 (and i have nothing to sell, they really fuck you up with upgrades dont they!)

Erez, definitely get a good CPU and Intel's Core 2 Duo are the best of the bunch right now. But Merom (C2D) came out earlier this year and it's success Santa Rosa will be out soon within a month or two. So you might want to hold off on that.
In terms of GPU, yeah most of them suck. Just remember NOT to get an intergrated graphics card.
The Alienware seems really expensive. $4,000 USD? Is that right? CNet said it didn't offer that good performance @ only a overclocked 2.66GHz.
I recommend this even though you don't like Mac :) :
MacBook Pro 17"
* 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1680 x 1050 pixels
* 2GB memory
* 160GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer SuperDrive
* ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics with 256MB SDRAM
$2,799.00
Again, you might just want to wait for Santa Rosa (Merom's successor).
yeah I know.. believe me there is nothing I would like more then to build a real PC, would get me much better performance,
and even save me a few $..
but I'm not gonna carry it around.. and I can't get a real PC, with Keyboard LCD Speakers and the whole deal.. I'm gonna need something that I can easily transfer..
not to use on the go, but more to park at where ever it is I will be staying..
well.. i guess they are called desktop replacements nowdays.. see how much i know :mrgreen: and why i could use some help ;)

Interesting, I need a laptop soon too but my budget is about 1200 Euros.. :bah:
the question is for what what usage.. as long as its not gaming, you can get a sweet one for ~$1600..
shit.. gaming is getting fucking expansive.. :?

I'm also in the market for a laptop. I think I'm going to go with an upgraded Dell 6400. 2gHz Core 2 Duo, 2 Gigs of RAM, 256MB ATI Video Card. Its gonna be cool :twisted: But its also not gonna be cheap :(
Dell seems very expansive.. their XPS 1710 system is just a ripoff price wise..
for a T7400, 2GB ram, 100GB HDD, DVD-RW, and a 7900 GS they ask for $2,589!! :shock: WTF.. and it has all sort of crap installed on it.. thats $410 over Alienware, and almost $600 more then the way I want to do it + I would have parts to sell.. :shock:
edit- I had a question too.. what are those desktops replacements I see with E6400, E6600 and even X6800 :?:
one example is this Hypersonic one..

ok, check out HP's dv9000t.. good price!
I only wounder how is its upgradeability.. and it doesn't have the Screen i want..

The dell Insperon 6400 is a pretty good deal. Its not a 17" sceen, but I want a 15" screen for portability. I think im going to get the 6400. About $1100 for the one that I want, and it should run most games very well. 2ghz Core2 Duo, 256mb graphics card, 2 gigs or ram, soundblaster audio card. :twisted:
^ keep me (well us.. dont be selfish Erez :mrgreen: ) updated :wink:
as I really am far from a decision..
