This weekend I decided that I would like to find out how to produce HDR (High Dynamic Range) pictures. I went out with my cam, experienced a few days and finally I have some picture I am happy with.

Have you tried using the HDR technique, show us your results.

* First picture is what the picture looks like with the standard camera settings.

* Second picture is the HDR picture, I used 3 picture (-2 stops and +2 stops) to get this result, I like the effect what do you think?

I know these pictures are far form perfect, but hey I started learning this technique a few days ago.

I think more people on JW have tried to work with HDR, I would like to see the results of them.

yeah from what ive read about it its a technique thats been used in film photography way before digital and IMO the best ones are the ones where u cant tell its been used.

I could be wrong though, im sure someone like martijn will be along to correct me as he seems to know his stuff.

Anyone use the Automated HDR tool in Photoshop CS2? I keep trying to load multiple exposure images and it says "there is not enough dynamic range to create a useful HDR image".. although I'm am positive these 5 images have enough dynamic range...

edit: Just read that Photoshop analyzes the recorded EXIF exposure data to justify whether or not the photos have a dynamic range. So that means if you want to use CS2 to create HDR photos, you must take multiple shots at different exposure levels rather than using 1 RAW photo and adjusting the exposure levels on the computer.

MartijnGizmo
05-22-2007, 04:38 AM
Or throw the EXIF away by using "save for web". :)

Well, gave it a shot again in CS2 after creating EXIF-less jpegs of the one RAW negative.. Not very happy with the results.. but am eager to perfect this technique.

I usually perform the HDR-action on a new Layer, so I can blend it with the original image. "Lighten" works very good most of the time.

I was using the HDR tool under File>Automate>HDR..

So basically you do it the manual way? I figured that would curb the best results but was hoping some software jockey created some nice piece of code to do it for me ;)

here the originals, as for the 400D, can't give you really an advise, it's my
first SLR, i'm a beginner on this topic. but as far as I know there isn't much
difference to the 350D.... at least not for semipro guys....... i would say
it's not worth to upgrade unless you get an interesting trade in...

I do the File>Automate>HDR, then in 16bit-mode use the Photomatix Plugin on a new Layer. Sometimes I don't even go that way, I just convert the image to 16bit and use the Photomatix plugin on a new layer, like in this picture:

I too am not sure what the fuss of HDR is, this just appears to be digital version of multiple exposure techniques from the days of processed film.

You take a series of pictures of the same subject with different filters and exposures, then combine the results in the dark room.

These days one just uses Photoshop to achieve the same thing - which to me seems to cheapen th efforts of the manual masters ;)

Of course, there is no denying a great photo to begin with makes a greta results, no matter the technique.
