I need some advice. I've been wanting to buy a gaming system for almost a year and a half now but I don't know which to buy. Everyone tells me that the XBox is better and the PS2 can be unreliable, so this should be a simple choice. But the only real reason I want a system is to play driving games, Gran Turismo especially, and now that I've seen the previews for GT4, I REALLY want to play it. I've tried then new Gotham City Racing in Best Buy over the break and it was a lot of fun too. So my question, which gaming system should I buy?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I have a couple of PS2 and a Gamecube... IMO it's very hard to have just a single console, but if you really have, the PS2 is the one with the wider choice of games so far :)

Don't choose a console because of the specs, but because of the games you can get for it. I 've chosen the PS2 a year ago because of the GT-series.

I know about the reliability issues you are talking about. At the shop I work at, we got plenty of PS2s with problems coming in. especialy lately they started braking up. Fans going dead(they are very hard to get) and lasers going bad all the time.

I bought a gaming system(xbox) because I needed a dvd player. Instead of buying some regular dvd player Id rather pay few more dollars and get a gaming system also. As far as DVD goes, nothing can beat xbox. You get High Defenition, 5.1 Dolby, and with proper software you can play multi region dvds, mp3s, avi's...whole heep of shit...

At first I considered PS2 because of the number of games it has. Now people keep saying that PS2 has better games, thats not completly true. One of the reasons that that statement is true is because Ps2 has much more games then XBOX(it was released earlier, plus it had lots of devots left from PS1), and its easier to more good games when you have thousands to choose from, unlike xbox who has much less games in general, meaning the chance of finding good ones is slimer.

Xbox got quite a few great hits also like Halo and PGR2, and a lot of recent games are released on XBOX only, while games for PS2 also come out on XBOX most of the time.

All of my friends are now getting XBOX's, all of them. XBOX is really getting better and better. With Xbox Live, and cool games coming up like Halo2 and Rallisport Challenge2(which is going to be awesome).

So Xbox is getting better, while PS2 is getting outdated, and its not going anywere.

From the hardware prespective XBOX is better all around and nobody is denieng that. More games are coming out, and XBOX is just getting better.

So in conclusion, PS2 has more games, XBOX is getting and will continue to get more and more great hits. XBOX is a better peace of hardware then PS2, so you make your decisions here. If your considering PS2 just because of GT4, then I dont think you should get it.

Now you said you mainly play racing games and XBOX got a lot of those. And they are good, no shit. Like Sega GT2002, and a new one much better one is coming out soon. PGR2 which I condsider to be the best console racer so far. Rallisport Challenge and Part two is coming out soon....and lots more.

Now lets take a look at PS2, GT4 is the only one as far as I know.

ANd TT is right,, it is hard to have only one console. XBOX and PS2 are pretty cheap right now, so you can pick up both somehow.

I bought PS2 only for GT3 and (last GT Concept). I´m waiting for GT4 more than 2 years and I can sure you that it´s a good inversion. I´ve got steering wheel too and it´s wonderful to play GT3.

all the consoles are cheap now the cube only £79.99 pretty cheap,i have the 3 consoles,cube,PS2 and x-box i play all of them but the one that gets played more is the PS2 for sure.i only bought the cube for the resident evil games and those are the only games i have for that console now.
the x-box is pretty good,PGR2 is well worth having if u own an x-box and HALO alone is a reason IMO to own an x-box.overall though the PS2 is the better machine, might not be as powerful but the graphics are still awesome and the selection of games is much greater than the other consoles.GT4 will be worth buyin a PS2 for IMO and there are many other games about im sure you would like to buy :D

Thanks for all your opinions. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a PS2, if there's still money around in a couple of months maybe I'll get an XBox also. First I think I'm going to need to buy a tv, unless there's a way to play on my moniter. I have a Dell flat panel, does anyone know if I can do this?

Thanks again everyone.

I know I can hook up my PS2 through my computer...but it's kind of stupid...I've got a Video Capture card, so essentially I'm running the PS2 through my computer graphics card...the sound isn't worked out yet thoguh...I"ve only just kluged it together.

my ps2 powersupply blew a while ago. the only game i have is gran turismo, 2,3, and gt concept. i might repair it, but the new ones are so cheap. the x-box will be realesed with power pc chips meaning someone will find a way to hack it and run Mac OSX so i might get a x-box down the track.

I have an Xbox that I just bought and it's amazing, the details are great and the games just keep getting better. However, I was one of the guys that bought a PS2 just because GT3... so far I've bought about 12 games for the Xbox and only 2 for PS2, so I think you're better off with the Xbox unless, as somebody posted, you want to buy both just to play GT4

My dear SFDMALEX, where can I get the sofware you mentioned?, specially the one to play multiregion DVD's.

As you know, I live in Mexico and it would be great to have my Xbox play region 1, 2 & 4 DVD's

I would get a PS2. I mean, I WILL!!! Once GT4 is out, I will get my PS2. I sold it (the one I had back in south america), but I will get a new one. I would also sugest you get one from http://modchipguy.com/ or http://www.xmodd.com/ that way you can play your "backups"

As soon as GT4 is out, I'm a buyer!

Great XBOX games, like HALO, will come out for PC. I just think PS2 is better in the way you can get more games (cars specially).

Copso, their is a new Multimedia pack coming out soon for the Xbox, it'll allow you to hook your Xbox up to you PC and play videos files on your PC, then it'll go through the Xbox onto the TV. What makes it good is it's an official addon on thing from Microsoft. Incase you didn't know, computer DVD drives don't have a region lockout. So, if you use that, you won't have to mod the Xbox.
I know many people do it, but I've never done it and probably never will. After all, I bought it to play games, not play movies and whatnot. I also don't have "backups" I know games can be expensive, but these "backups" are partly the reason for the high price.

I myself have a PS2 and an Xbox. The Xbox sees a lot more use. A lot more. The last game I bought for the PS2 was GTA: Vice City.
Lately, they both have been acting up. Sometimes I have to turn them on and off to get them to work properly. The PS2 has for more games, but I'd have to say the Xbox has better games. To each their own though, I'm sure it's the opposite for some people.
Once money permits, I am most likely gonna pick up a Gamecube. Mainly for the Resident Evil games, but their are a few others I want also.

TT, you wouldn't have Animal Crossing would you? I am told it's super addictive. I want it.

Also brings me to another point, I should have never sold my Dreamcast. It was a great systems. Shame it flopped. I suppose I could pick one up dirt cheap now though.

Thanks for the tip... I have my own DVD player, but it would be ice to have the Xbox to play region 1&2 DVD's as I recenlty bought the high-definition pack for it, it's nice to have a game console and a DVD player out of the same device.

Incase you didn't know, computer DVD drives don't have a region lockout.

Unfortunately you're incorrect. All drives are allowed to only change regions 5 times and then it is locked in stone. (However, it's pretty easy to get around with a firmware update that removes this provision.)

As for the PS2 deal, I bought mine for GT3 and haven't bought any other games since. So when you think about it, I paid nearly $400CAN for a driving game . However, soon (hopefully!) I'll be playing GT4. (Or at least my import copy of Prologue...)

Depends on the country you live in. Release date Japan February, Relaese Europe April. These aren't official release date!

Until a decent force-feedback steering wheel comes out for the XBox - something in the same league as the Logitech Momo wheel series - XBox will just be a novelty for driving game fans.

I keep buying the XBox racing games, hoping I will keep playing with the game pad - but I just throw it on the shelf after a little bit.

the PS2 is still hooked up with the GT3 CD - and has been pretty much for 3 years now.

GT4 can not arrive soon enough...

Take totally believe any release dates you may come across, Polyphoney likes to delay the GT games a few times before they come out! :P

I too would like a decent FF wheel for the Xbox, but it doesn't bother me too much that there isn't one. The controller is very comfortable to use, I can't say the same for the PS2 Dual Shock controllers, I can't reach the thumbsticks comfortably.
