Thanks for the scan. The turbo engines used to make mad hp. I think the Honda was making something like 1200hp in qualifying trim.

Though I am curious how they measured all this. Did they have dynos that powerful back then?

Thats actually a really good and intersting question.

I would imagine that they did, as they would need to run the engine through the revs to get the air/fuel map to be as efficient as possible. I dont know how dynos work, but I imagine that they race teams would have something that would measure the power, as that would be an easy way to see what changes to the engine add power.

I did a google search and found a thread where they mentioned that the most powerful dyno at the BMW factory could deal with 1280hp but the turbo engine exceeded that

So I think that the 1500hp was sort of calculated or guessed. Meaning they look at the engine power curve upto say 1200 hp at whatever revs it was doing at this time and extrapolate the data to the redline.

It seems that BMW was hunting the scrap yards for well weathered 1500 cc blocks as they felt it had suffered all the wear and tear it was going to. :) They then propped it with new mechanicals (pistons, valves, cranks, etc) and let it rip. They felt this was less risky than subjecting a new block to all this power.

Seen this car in person. Pretty cool car for its day and the TAG motor is a compact bad ass beast!

Damn, great find man!

Love this magazine scan! :D

The engines in those times were insane, the 1.5 Litre BMW engine having over 1200 HP!
