Within the next couple of months I will be looking for a fun car to beat on during this summer. My budget is $3,000 so my only concerns are that it runs strong.. I'm basically looking for a deal I could get the most bang for my buck.

I'm pretty much open to any year/model/manufacture as long as the car meets the following criteria:

- MUST be rear wheel drive and have a manual transmission
- Preferably light weight unless it has a torquey 8 or 6cylinder
- Reliable

A few car's I have in mind are:
- Toyota AE86 Corolla (83-86)
- Toyota MR2 (91-95)
- Ford Mustang 5.0 (87-93)
- Chevy Camaro (82-92)
- BMW E30/E36 318/325i/s (86-96)

Before I make any purchase I will at test drive some of the car's I am looking at. I will post my reviews and thoughts of the car throughout my searching process.

Suggestions, comments, opinions would be great ;) Keep in mind this car will be a secondary car for fun spirited driving.. No need for any practicality other than reliability. This car should be able to take a nice beating.

Been looking at this 325 near my area in Boston.. could probably get it for under $3,000 but not sure about the condition. I'm going to try and check it out this week.

It all depends on what deals I find.

I should be able to find all of the cars I listed for under $3k, I just have to find the one in the best condition.

I think all would be fun, but honestly I think the most fun would be a Mustang with a beefy 302 under the hood.

MR2 would be an awesome track/autocross beast. It is also easy and cheap to maintain and mod.

IDK much about BMW parts and such, but I know that older Porsches are very very expensive to maintain. Even if you can get the car uuber cheap, just remember that it will break down, and will need to be fixed eventually.

Erez
03-26-2007, 03:10 PM
well, unless for a straight line.. i wouldn't go for an old American..
I'll join Dani and Arman.. and you can get a 325 for much less then 3K i think.. (and sense its gonna be a beater car, top condition shouldn't be something you will be looking for.. a friend of mine who moved to the US got a e30 325 for $200  from some chick.. )

dutchmasterflex
03-26-2007, 03:19 PM
Yup, deals all over the place, just gotta find them. I really do not intend on spending $3k, that's just hte absolute maximum for a car in GREAT condition.

MR2's are actually selling for around 5k for a decent one... I've always wanted one..

The Mustang and Camaro obviously wouldnt be as nimble but would suuuuurely bring a big smile to my face as I would power over steer into every corner.

graywolf624
03-26-2007, 05:53 PM
I think the most fun would be a Mustang with a beefy 302 under the hood.
He will have difficulty finding one with a 302 for 3000.

Id suggest a thirdgen fbody, preferably one with the 350. Faster then the 302 in every way, and yet cheaper because demand is less.

The other suggestion might be a miata, if you can go without bhp.

dutchmasterflex
03-26-2007, 06:03 PM
Yeah, I was actually a bit suprised to see some 5.0's selling for over 10k. There is definitely a big demand for them.

Found a couple in my price range but obviously not in the best condition and one with a sketchy seller.

Good to know that the Chevy is a better performer and cheaper.

Miata would be a good buy for sure, but they just don't appeal to me in anyway.

Thanks for the input.

In a few hours I'm going to check out that 325e in that eBay link I posted.. nice and wet out so it should be an interesting test drive.

325e has 2,7 engine and 120ps but low revs(max 4000rpm or so) so its like a diesel engine you cant revv it but pushes right from the bottom. Its an economic version not for sport driving  but a couple of changes on the engine(head and so) and you can have over 200ps from it but its not what you are looking for.
325 has 170ps, almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution, excellent suspension even by todays standards etc etc you need to have a test drive in it ;) be sure it has LSD thou to have some fun

dont know how it is in us but here spare parts for e30 are for peanuts new or used 8)

Honda CRX ED9.... small light good 1.6lt high reving motor.. stock form you can have so much fun a the track !!!

dutchmasterflex
03-26-2007, 10:38 PM
CRX is front wheel drive, not what I'm looking for. But definitely a scary little car. A friend a mine put a 200hp type-r engine into his gutted CRX... even without vtec turned on it was ridiculous.

The 325e felt like it had nice grunt to it, but Arman you're rigt about the low revs. When I pushed it past 4000RPM I didn't get the expected scream from the engine and the surge of power. Engine was running nicely and the short shifter felt good.
Looked real nice with the breyton kit, but the paint job on the bumpers was pretty crappy. Turns out the previous owner did all of the work on the car including rebuilding the transmission. He wants a little too much what it's worth considering he doesn't know about the true mileage.

Hope to get my hands on a 325i soon so I can feel the difference.

I like the sound of a nice MR2, but as you said, finding one for $3000 could be hard. Any BMW can be quite expensive to maintain, parts and labor are outrageous for them IMO (sorry ZfrkS62 :P). A Mustang 5.0 would be a lot of fun, and it can be fast for cheap as I'm sure you know.

My vote is for an MR2, maybe you can find a high mileage one for a good deal. Keep us updated! :D

My namesake. . . :)

The Corolla GTS was definitely one of the most fun cars I have owned. I just drove the shit out of it and it was great! 7500rpm redline gives you plenty of revs to play with. Not much power though, but nevertheless the extra shifting is a lot of fun trying to keep it above 6500rpm.

The E30 325i that I used to own was a slush box, so unfortunately that takes a bit away from the "fun" department.

Might I also recommend a Miata? Yes I know it is "gay" but at the same time with some Spec Miata parts on there for cheap, I think that could be a very fun car.

Make sure to get the v6. Some of the earlier 4 cylinder fieros had a habit of spontaneously combusting. That was probably the biggest thing that led to its down fall.

Yes the 84's which only came in a 90hp 4 cyl model had some fire issuse initially. there was a recall and the the problem was fixed for the most part. Mine was an 86GT with a 4spd manual and 2.8ltr V6. No fire problems for V6s of course. The 4spd was an aquired taste, I wouldnt reccomend it.

They canned the 4spd manual that year so late model 86s, 87s, and 88s have the 5spd. You want an 88 because that was the year the car finally got its own fiero suspension, so handles a bit better than the rest.

P.S. They also made T-Tops and sold them in yellow that year ;)

Ahh, good to know it was only the 4 bangers that were catching on fire. I heard that about those cars. V6 it is, but at the moment I can't find any in my area.

There is a possibility I might be taking a look at a 1989 Formula Firebird 305 5-speed with 100k, everything original. Should be able to get it for under $2k. I have a feeling I should jump on this one..

700whp? by turbo charging them and changing internals or just bolting on?

I know they are nice torquey 4 bangers from trucks. I'll have to get a chance to have a go in one soon.

going to be a street car ;) No tracks around me I can go too, plus I wont be able to afford track time + tires and brakes.

Camaro will be great for all of my power over steer needs. The one I'm looking at today is going for a real good price, less half of what I am willing to pay for something in good condition. If it's in overall good condition, even with the V6 I will definitely consider it. I could always put in a LS6 from a Z06 or in a few years a LS7 from the new C6 Z06 and have one bad ass 3rd gen Camaro.

3rd gen camaros make perfectly good track cars. Go to the photo gallary for the pictures of the one I use to have, notice Im in front of a 3 series bmw. They make excellent track cars per $, their scca class is very packed and they routinely win the class(like every year). Given some stategic spending you can run with cars like stock c5 z06's. Your not going to keep up with modified ones, but your also only talking a 10k buildup.

I would avoid the v6 though.

Had a short (no license plates) test drive in the Red (with silver stripes) 86 Camaro with a 305 V8 and 5-speed transmission.

Ran great and sounded real nice with its 4 inch straight pipes.

Owner bought it from a friend, never had the chance to put it on the road officially but drove it for about 150 miles on dealer plates with no problems.

Suspension took bumps nicely but didn't really get to test out it's handling. On the way back gave it about 3/4th throttle from first to second which easily put a smile on my face.

Engine was rebuilt a couple times, he was unsure of the total mileage but the clock said 71,000 but mentioned it had rolled over once. So it should have 170,000 miles on the chassis. The transmission must have been rebuilt as well cause it felt solid and shifted very well. Mentioned he would get more information from his friend who did the work.

Only real bad is that it need an EGR valve and new valve covers. I should be able do the valve covers my self but not sure about the EGR valve or how much that would cost, considering I don't even know what the fuck EGR stands for.

It's going pretty cheap at $1400 and a couple people are looking at it within the next few days.

EGR valve is the emissions crap. If you live in a state that doesnt test it, just go without. You live in the NE so you may have to find it, probably get it real cheap scrapped from one over on thirdgen.org.

Even an LS2 would be fine with me.. but honestly, I do not want to do any engine swapping anytime soon.
You can do a complete ls1 swap for about 2500.. Theres even a company that sells a almost bolt in kit.
The major benefit to the third gen is every part from a 4th gen is swapable, either directly or with a minor modification. While the 4th gen parts arent the greatest, in a car weighing 200-300 lbs less using the 4th gens lighter engine, etc. makes the lighter car faster.

Let us know what you end up doing.

dutchmasterflex
03-30-2007, 09:03 AM
Complete LS1 swap for 2500? I'm assuming that's with me doing all the work? I'd have to rent all the tools to do it as I am not a mechanic with an available garage. But I will have about a month free to work on it in my parent's driveway. Bolt on engine swap sounds like a very nice idea.

Not to sure if NY State requires the EGR valve for emissions, but I'm assuming they do.

Still trying to decide if I should get a MA license and register it here in Boston or register it in NY like my current car.

The kid selling the hooked up 325e called me up last night asking what I thought about the drive.. told him it was alright but was asking too much.

As of now I am really leaning towards finding a 3rd gen F body in good condition. It's a damn shame so many of them are flashy colors with stripes

My twin gotta steal on an absolute minter of a car. He bought an '87 325 5-speed for a mere $1900. And, yes, that's a base 325, no e or i suffix. It's still great fun to beat around in. :D

I'd hafta recommend the german brands because they were built right back in the 80s. I'm sure a V8 'stang or camaro would be fun to tool around in, too.

So far I've been in a 87 325e and a 86 Camaro 305. Both were solid cars and drove great. If anything the Camaro felt a little more solid even if it had a few bumps on the hood.

Surprisingly there are a good amount of fun cars to be had for $2000. I hope to get a car and insure it for at least 6 months (with no coverage :? ) for $3000.

Edit: Just E-mailed the guy who's selling the 86 Camaro I tested yesturday and made an offer. If he allows me to borrow his dealer plates for the day I could pick it up this Saturday and drive it down to NY, then take the bus back up to Boston. It's a big favor to ask, so we'll see what he says.

dutchmasterflex
04-03-2007, 06:15 PM
Thing about the RX-7 is the wankel. They drink oil like no other and seem to blow their seals easily and often.

The one I'm looking at has 66k miles on the clock and is owned by a good friend from High School. It's in great condition. I know he wants $6k for it, so it's highly doubtful I will be able to get it from him.

Yeah, New England probably isn't the best place for a muscle car, and it's definitely showing now.

Are you still in Delaware? A trip down there would be worth it for a good deal on a third gen I would be able to drive back up to NY.

Taking a look at a 1992 E36 325i 5-speed 4 door with M3 suspension tomorrow. Asking for a little over than what I want to pay but if I really like it we'll see how much I can talk him down. I'm really just going for the test drive as the 4 doors already turns me off.

My TA was a 3000 dollar car for quite a while. Then I did the suspension and it became a 3500 dollar car. Once i get my rebuilt engine in, a new overdrive transmission, true dual, exhuast, the damage from the september accident fixed, and some other stuff, it'll be a 12k car, lol.

Anyway, here's the breakdown of my car as it was at 3k.

Car: 1979 Trans Am with Oldsmobile 403 and TH350 transmission (3 speed auto)
- 100 purchase price of car
- 300 tires
- 575 used engine (so I could rebuild the original one and still drive the car)
- 300 headliner and carpet
- 20 new tail lights
- 15 new antenna
- 50 asssorted interior parts
- 150 brakes
- 100 various fluids (excluding gasoline)
- new master cylinder
- 17 new heater core
- 300 new stereo system (head unit and replacement speakers: sounds great)
- 300 used rear end with 2.73 gears
- 50 rebuilt power booster (turns out the old one was fine, oh well)
- 100 radiator flush
- 30 new fan
- a bunch of other stuff that I don't have itemized. It was actually under 3k a ways but close enough.

The car was fun to drive and was fairly quick. 14.4 in the 1/4 mile. In it's stock form it'd pull an average of .83 g's on the skidpad (I suppose it does better now)

Moral of the story: 2nd gen Trans Ams can be one way to go fast for cheap. It all depends on your initial buy I guess. Prices on all sorts of American muscle, even 2nd gens, have gone up in the last three years so the great deals aren't as common. 3rd gen F-bodies are dirt cheap but those 5.0's (the majority of them) just don't make the power. They'd still be fun though.

Another idea is to get a dirt cheap 240sx and a salvage yard LS1 and find a way combine the two . . . :fadein:

Well, I've been having second thoughts on exactly why I want to buy a another car...

I was on my way to checking out a 1992 E36 325i Sedan with M3 springs and struts, when all of a sudden the exhaust of my RAV4 decided to drop to the ground, breaking off right before the Cat, only being held on by 2 bolts by the muffler at the back.

It was then I came to the conclusion that maybe I should look for a better car to use more as a replacement rather than a secondary beater to thrash around in for the summer months.

I will also be starting my "professional" life soon and do not feel confident taking corporate suits out for lunch in my confetti blue RAV4.

Currently considering on bumping up my budget to find a nice 5-speed E36 325i. The 1992 I mentioned above was beat up, inside and out, but still drove decent.(The seller races a modified EVO 2 in NASA)

I'm looking for a 1993 or later model cause they added Vanos to the 2.5L engine after 1992.

I just talked to someone at a Honda/Audi dealer who has a 1994 325i Sedan with 90k miles on the clock. Fully loaded with sport suspension, said he wants about $7k for it. I can only realistically do $4-5k.

I know a few people(ae86_16v and Zfrk) have mentioned the weak parts and problem areas before, if anyone else has more info or guidance in the E36 please help me out. Thanks in advance!

Yeah I've been looking at all the 325's on eBay all over the country. Saw that, first gold one, definitely a good price, and I don't mind the color.. It actually blends in nice with traffic IMO, and won't get as noticed by the five-o.

Those 2 325is' you posted are nice but sadly have an automatic transmission. I know if I got an automatic I'd just be punching myself each time I drove it cursing that I didn't get a manual.

This is the one I might take a look at this week.

Personally I find the earlier 92-95 E36s to be crap. I mean they have improved a lot on the car over the course of it's model life. If that was the case of a pre-facelift E36, I rather have a 90-91 E30 instead.

I preferred my old 1990 E30 325i over the early E36s. The build quality was much better in later E30 model life than in early E36 life.

By the way, all in all at the same mileage (~120k miles), I think my old 1990 E30 325i seem to have better quality build than my 1998 E36 M3.

I was just surprised to see that I there are a few E36s in my budget.. and I feel like I've seen every E30 325i currently on sale in the North east.

I like the modern look of the E36, and thought that the newer car would feel more solid and reliable. But if I what you say is the case, I might as well just find a E30 in great condition.

Yeah definitely. I mean unless you could afford a later model E36 with the updated interior and small exterior mods (rounder kidneys) etc, I think I would prefer a nice example of a E30.

On a side note, Craigslist is great up in San Francisco Bay Area, just so many people use it so it has a great Network effect. From looking for apartments to jobs, to buying crap and selling crap, overall it is just an awesome classify.

Unfortunately since moving down here to LA, CL doesn't have that same great network. Been looking for something similar and have not found it yet.

Let me know if you have any questions. I am pretty familar with both generations of cars.

5-speed with 149,000 miles on the clock.

I know it's not as sporty as a couple and not as cool as a V8 3rd gen Fbody,
but I love the look and it will be useful as I do a lot of moving around and have a of stuff.

Anyone have any experience with these cars or the 3.5L 6 cylinder engine? Supposably this car gets 30-40 miles per gallon which is a bit surprising to me.

I've driven a friends 525i even though it was automatic it was still pretty fun to drive.

My mom has a 1989 E32 735i. It is okay. Not too many problems with it, mostly electrical programs with the 7 series. A lot of sensors going wrong. But the engine and tranny are pretty solid.

We get about 20mph combine with both Freeway and city driving, but 80% freeway though.

Although the E32 is a lot heavier car, the 3.5L still moves it okay, especially "okay" for my mom anyways. I always think the BMW's best forte was/is their Inline 6 engines. And this 3.5L isn't an exception, fits the bill as being a good engine. The 4 cylinders were always a bit lacking compare to the japanese counter parts, the 8 cylinders were problematic and maintenance whores. Likewise for the V12 engines. Super smooth, but it will nickle and dime to death.

well, 7 pages is a bit much to filter through, but here's my .02 (as worthless as it usually is :P ) :

the E34 isn't lightweight. Sure the engine is torquey enough in a manual, but if you can find one for 3K, the interior is going to look like 1500. 3K may get you a 530 or 540 in that generation, but with the 530 you run the risk of getting a first gen M60 which was famous for those fuel vs cylinder lining problems.

If i may, i suggest you find a Datusn 240 or 260Z. They're light and have a peppy inline 6. Maintenance is cheap as they are chain driven engines (no belt to replace every 60K like the Bimmers) and you can swap just about anything into them. Mazda 13b's are popular as well as Chevy LTx's. There are even M70 V12's stuffed into a couple.

What kind of maintenance costs are you looking at ... So you'd suggest the V8 despite gas and maintainence ?

Have you driven one?

the thing about the E34 is, it's now at the age where it's in the hands of it's second or third owner. by now the third owner is the one that has wanted a 5er but can't afford an E39, so they just grab a cheaper 535. one around 3k may have been decently kept up, but the interior is probably going to look like ass and it's a coin flip as to wether or not the sunroof still works.

If it has not been kept up, you're going to be looking at 2-3K for repairs depending on what's been neglected.

common for the E34:

Water pump, especially if it's the original plastic impeller that disintegrates over time. If that happens, be safe and do the t-stat too.

Radiator

O-rings for the lines that connect the brake master cylinder to it's reservoir.

Intake Gaskets

Thrust Rod bushings

Thrust rods/control arms

on the V8's, the crankcase vent valve and throttle body gaskets deteriorate and cause vacuum leaks, that ends up costing you 4 hours to reseal the intake manifold. Intake boot deteriorates too causing problems as well.

They drive really well when the suspension is working right, but it gets really mushy if the struts are worn. The V8 is great, even in front of an automatic. but i think the car is just a touch too heavy for the 6 to really shine.

they look so much older, i like them actually but e30 look SO much better(and younger) and its more sophisticated(suspention etc) as I heard from owners who had both cars, to find a car in a really good condition is a problem even here, 200km from Germany 8)

er yeah E28 ;)

Right now there are few of these 535's for sale real cheap in the NY area.

That's the one I was planning on taking a look at today.. Not to sure If I'll have time to trek out to one of the 5 boroughs today though. Seems like a good deal to me.

that seems fishy to me.

1) if it's posted by the owner, why does the key have a read tag on it as if it was sitting at a used car lot somewhere?

2) the outer door molding strips seem to be misaligned between the left and right sides

3) the hood isn't level across the front

4) the 535i badge looks crooked

something tells me this car has met another one. if you get in it and it smells like nail polish, it's been in a body shop. At the very least the car has been repainted. but given the hood alignment, i would say it's been put back together.

Here is a real cheap, reliable car that has a GAS SAVING 6 Cylinder  say what? :D 3,5 liter is a gas saving engine  if that would be 2,5(2,7)ETA I'd not say a thing.
Price seems to be normal (for europe) they are dirt cheap here and most of those cars have been in bigger or smaller accident its only depends how well it was fixed, mine had a several accidents probably and its still in pretty good shape.
On pics it looks nice you need to go and look at it in metal.

Go for E28 M535i or better still Alpina.

Also remember to check that there is a locking diff. M30 engined E28 tend to get pretty good mileage, because they have quite high ratios in the back end, engines are torquey so it is no problem.

There is good space compared to E30 too, and not that much more weight. Try to find Top Gear Review about //M cars and you see it is all time high 5. 12valve engined higher positioned than 24valve hi-power real M5.

The overall build quality, fun factor, reliability and practicality of the E30 has made its mark in my decision looking for a new car.

Found a 1989 325is about 30 minutes north from Boston. Only listed problem is that AC does not work and the "power steering leaks a little".

do you have any more decription&pics? rust, condition of the interior and so?
I can mark on pics what places to search for rust as they are very common. the main advice with buying e30 I know is - the most important is the body as all the rest is cheap to fix but fighting with rust can cost you alot and its a pita to do.
stearing leak is common problem for e30 most of the time you need to change it as rapairing is not always successful but possible, you can do it yourself they sell some kind of repair kits here :) dont know about AC as I dont have any just like power steering

Arman, here is the full description from the listing:

1989 BMW 325IS with 168,000 miles, original owner. This car has been well maintained and is in good running condition. The body has a very small amount of rust, but is otherwise fine. Power windows, power locks, sunroof, leather interior with no rips or stains. The AC is not working (heat works fine) and the power steering leaks a little.

"Very small amount of rust"

Still playing phone tag with the seller. Hope to see it sometime this week, I will bring my camera (if I remember too) and take shots of all problem areas.

I think you could do better. Although the Market might be different in Boston than in California. I picked up my 1990 325i 2 years ago for $2500 with about 110k on the clock. So that's why I think you could do better.

Fortunately I never had to deal with Rust here in California so I would not know anything about that. But Arman is right though, check for Rust, the worst to repair.

Other things, like cooling system, when was it replaced? Umm, see if suspensions been refreshed. Drive the car, see how it feels. That should tell you a lot. Listen the the motor and the car see if it makes any weird noises. See if the Sunroof open and closes good, the one on my car broke. Something had to do with the track but it would still Tilt.

Umm, can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

As for the a/c... well - get rid of the system... lightweights E30 are the funniest!! :P

I could care less for the A/C. My type of A/C is a open window and gas pedal to the floor ;)

I'm also looking for a car - looking to spend about $3500

I haven't had a 190E before but I sort of "want" one.
I'm still considering getting another MB W124, I doubt I can find a cheap one.

or a E30

So if you had to choose between a BMW E30 or MB 190E, considering repairs etc, what would you choose?

I really like 190E's too but feel they are even more rare to find than 325i's. I know more about the E30 too (although not to much). So I'd pic a E30 over a 190E if I had the choice.. although I wouldnt turn down a good deal on a 190E.

Going to look at the car in a few hours. I intend on having it brought to a lift for a proper inspection by preferably a BMW expert in the Boston area.

A friend of a friend works on BMW cars down in Virginia, www.jmttrackcars.com and has basically told me to forget about buying a car from up north. Rust is a big problem and from his experience says its worth it to find a good rust-free car down south. He's on the look out for somethin in my budget. Ideally it would be best to go through him as he would find a E30 in great condition.

We'll see just how bad this New England E30 is..

This car turned out to be a little worse than expected.

Everything is original on the car, except for the body work (hood, trunk lid, fenders, door) which was done after numerous accidents. (Got T-boned, T-boned someone else, car rolled down driveway through a busy street and only hit a small tree).

Clutch was still alright even with 168k miles.

Rust on body as seen in the pics, didn't check the underbody but owner is willing to get it on a lift to check it out.

Leaking some oil and coolant and gas tank probably needs to be swapped out.

But the engine seemed to run great, although the suspension needs work (worn shocks, needs new control arm or somethin too)

Going to check out this AE86 that just popped up for sale in Boston..

171,000 MILES on the chassis, 80,000 or 180,000 on the 1983 1.6L engine which was swapped by previous owner.

Pros:
5 Speed
Rear Wheel Drive
Baby Supra Rims
New stock exhaust from headers back, with aftermarket muffler
Motorized Panasonic MP3/WMA/CD Player with Ipod connectivity
Pioneer 6X9's with re-carpeted rear deck
New Sumitomo tires in rear, and BF Goodrinch T/A's in front
Prestige Alarm System
Quick Release Wood Steering Wheel
Sunroof

Cons:
Needs brake cables for E-Brake
The starter is starting to stick once in a while, should be replaced soon.
Car could use bodywork and a new paint job, to even out faded spots, and some small rust spots.
The interior is clean, but the seats are ripped in the usual Toyota spots.

No no no . . . . don't get the SR5 version. You gotta get the GTS. Bare minimum. At least the GTS is fun to drive, you will end up hating that car. GTS models are a lot more rare though.

Definitely the hatchback looks better as well.

I know you've looked to the point of exhaustion and that you are ready to settle on anything right now, but don't make that mistake because you will end up regretting it. Worst of all, you won't even like what you are driving. Just keep on looking they are out there . . .

It took me 8-9 months to find my M3. The GTS I used to had, I got really luckly and just came across it.

BTW: Since it is an SR5 model, technically it isn't even a AE86, it is an AE85. ;)

Also, after owning both cars, the E30 and AE86, I gotta say that the AE86 was more fun to drive outright. The E30 is arguably nicer and better in certain ways, but on the fun factor, the AE86 wins. I don't know what it was, maybe the higher revving engine, then way I was able to push the car. I think it came down to that I was able to drive the AE86 harder than the E30. :)

So the story is...

A kid who works at this trusted shop wants to sell it. I had a quick (bout 1 minute) test drive, which it failed cause the clutch slipped while I tried to make a quick 180 u-turn.

I'm going to have the owner of the shop go over it and if he tells me it will last a 6,000 mile trip cross country and back, I'll most likely buy it for $1,000 with a new clutch.

for 1000$ not bad... but i thought you was looking for a car in better condition thou.

Body work and paint are the most expensive things to do on the car everything else you just exchange for a few peanuts.
if the car was abused and lousely fixed i'd stay away from it as you will need to change alot. well looking at the interior(and exterior) I'd say it was abused :D

I'd personally keep looking for a better piece, there are incredible deals out there you just need to find them

Well what I forgot to mention was that the owner of the shop knows Nissans like the back of his hands.. He used to race a tube chassis Sentra, and has a Datsun B210 Honey Bee waiting to be rebuilt.

If I buy this car for $1,000, which is more than it's worth, I will have a place to get it inspected and repaired at the shop with ease. Not to mention I am helping out the young kid I will be buying it from.

I don't mind the work on the exterior and interior of the car, I could care less about the paint and body as I will probably smash it up anyways.

I trust the owner of the shop enough to tell me whether or not the car will last a round cross country trip.. so we'll see.

I've been thinking that exact same thing. I found 240sx's in much nicer condition for a few hundred dollars more.

It's definitely not worth $1000 for sure, but I'd only want it if it checks out alright with the shop owner and with a new clutch (preferably stage 2+).

Well, talked to the owner of the shop and here's the low down.

The 240sx has been through the hands of 3 kids who work at the shop. It is currently in the hands of one kid who has a tall pile of tires that he is slowly going through a few days at a time. Basically, its a burnout machine.

The owner of the shop has made it a point that he would not do any upgrades to the car, and only maintenance. (No need for bad publicity) He did mention he would do an overall safety check if I plan on going cross country with the thing.

The engine is still pretty solid, its a daily driver at the moment.

With all that said, it would not be a good candidate for a project car, dumping money into it.

But I am still contemplating on having my own burnout machine for the rest of the summer months

It's official. I am going to join the E30 bandwagon here on JW.

Yesterday I mailed out the deposit for a black 1987 325is. BMW race mechanic says it's in great condition with no rust and a strong motor. Has an upgraded suspension, Bilstein shocks and H & R springs as well as a Borla exhaust. Owner says he will throw in a new racing seat and spare wheels along with the sale.

Sucks that I don't even have photos of the car, but this is a very trusted friend of mine who found it. He makes a living out of building BMW track cars, so I can only believe everything he says.

Should be picking her up before the end of November :D

Anything RWD with a manual transmission and limited slip for $3k or less.

simple. There are plenty of second and third gen F-bodies (Camaros and Firebirds) that fit that bill. Third gens are currently all over the junkyards and are ridiculously cheap. There's a reason they're cheap but they do have potential. They won't always be unloved like they are now. Anyway, if that's all you're looking for, there are more than enough F-bodies (and probably mustangs too) that will meet those requirements.

and comes with these:

Probably won't be long until I install the momo seat, basically until I figure out what tools I'll need to do it.

Sad thing is, she's still in North Carolina.. about a 9 hour drive away from where I'll be keeping her in NY. Planning on taking the trip down south within the next month.

The mechanic that's handling the sale is a member at VIR just across the border in Virginia.. there's a slight chance for a couple test laps :)

Dude, congrats man! I'm sure you'll have a blast with her, stay safe.

One of my friends has one, and it seems like a pretty fun ride to own.

wow, another E30 here :D

as said - get rid of the red interior :lame: , steering wheel needs to be replaced for some sportier one and the sport-air filter needs some nice intake to take a deep breath - how about removing the left long-distance light?

those bumpers - ehmm - ewwwww  just like old Saabs :?

but DAAAAMN, what a nice MOMO seat

btw, how many bhp has the 325is version?

Are you guys crazy? Red leather is fucking HOT  just need to take care of it and it will be fine. Send the whole interior to me DMF I'd love to have it in my e30 :P

Damn another JW'er have his 2,5 :( I need too!

Drive save and be careful - 170PS do bite  does it have LSD?

American bumpers look so awful :( is there any way to change them for euro ones? I mean will it be legal? You can pick them up in Prague if you will come next year ;)

Other than than - congrats!

and I thought that 325is is more powerfull than 325i? :hmm:

EDIT: nope, just my wrong thoughts

"The 325is was an upgrade from the standard 325i, as some new features were added to the car as standard. These included the full electrics package, BMW sports seats, black roof-liner, BMW M-technic II body kit, BMW 14 inch BBS wheels and a Close Ratio gearbox. Other features also found on the 325is were options, however over time, some have been mistaken for standard features. These options include a Limited Slip Differential (LSD), leather interior, sunroof and BMW 15 inch BBS wheels. Options differed on vehicles produced in the United States."

As I mentioned, the car is still a 9 hour drive away. These pics were taken by the BMW mechanic who is handling the sale and prepping the car for the trip. Can't wait to give her a proper wash to see her shine. Will definitely spend some time takking some beauty shots.

I like the red leather interior, doesn't look too worn for a 20 year old. Good to hear the seat are easily removable.. I also plan on using the original drivers seat as my desk chair in my apartment, sorry Arman :\
I agree the "diving board" bumpers almost ruin the look, but they can be "pushed in" so they dont stick out as much.

Arman, I would LOVE some Euro chrome bumpers! Did a quick search to see how much I could find them for and didn't even see any for sale.. but I imagine they can easily be found in Europe.

Phobo, didn't even notice that llittle switch.. Have no idea what it could be for since it looks like it was installlled by the owner.

First thing I asked were if the fog lights still work.. hope they do, but if not, the checkered covers are going aand will become air vents.

Can't wait to drive her up north!!
