Cars at the shop *No 56k* UPDATED 1/31/08

here are some cars at the shop this week, for those who dont know I am now employed by Vintage Iron Restoration, we do full frame-off restorations. The company has been around for about 20 years, and there are 4 employees counting me!

currently we have 2 chevelle SS (454 and 396), three challengers (a 440RT, 340 T/A, and the shop car, the orange that has a fuel injected built 426 Hemi + 4 speed), a Olds 442, camaro, a trans am, a 69 firebird we are doing a ls1 swap in, a 69 hemi roadrunner we are doing a frame-off on, a 66 vette, and a 68 vette, and a GTX (i just completed a A/C install in)

There's a muscle car shop down the street from my parents house in NY, they always have some interesting cars there, but I dont think they do much work these days. I'll try and stop by this weekend.

Looking forward to the pictures and videos.. That orange Camaro reminds me of a friend from High School who past away. He had a mint '68 in solid orange... with a very big tank of nitrous in the back seat 0X

i have a friend with a 93 ex-cop car mustang 5.0 with the 5 speed, that car is a blast, i highly recommend them for a fun street car!

we spend alot of time fixing/repair/undoing alot of other "shops" work

the car i am currently working on is a 68 427 vette 4 speed, all numbers matching

it was "restored" to the tune of 65k bucks before it came to our shop, and its a mess....
missing bolts/screws, hacked up wiring, non functioning wipers and popup headlights, would not idle, carbs were leaking from someone attempting to rebuild them, it was sad

but monday ill dial it in, and already fixed the other issues, and its as good as new

the black car that is under re-assembly is a car we are doing a full frame off resto on, its a numbers matching 12k miles original 1969 Roadrunner HEMI 4 speed. it will be awesome when completed :)

the red and white kit car cobra is actually being listed for 39k

it has a 5.0 ford mustang cobra engine and tranny, its actually quite the good deal for the money considering it can easily cost more to build the car then what it is selling for.

Friday we had the other real cobra show up!

Its a 289 Cobra, which in my opinion is a more significant car, since its the car which started it all so to speak, altho the 427 cobra is definitely the larger grin inducer, the 289 cobra was more of a racing machine. the 289 cobras where also slightly narrower than the 427 cars and retained a closer look to the original AC. The 289 cars, in their original configuration also had a transverse leaf spring front suspension that is actually very similiar to that of the corvette's rear suspension, it was only until the 427 cars that they went with a more modern suspension.

here is a 1970 dodge challenger T/A (trans am) we just completed, it leave tomm :(

this is a odd car, its B5 blue, with a blue interior (will post pics tomm) as well as a 4 speed car. the actual production of the T/A Challenger is about 2197 units, and only 949 were 4 speed. I imagine not many were the Blue/Blue combo

This car was made for only 1 year (1970) and was to celebrate the challenger's Trans Am series racing prgram, much like the AAR Cuda (which one day i will have pics of, i promise, we have one!!) which was also a 1 year model.

The car was sold a bit north of 140k, and is powered by a 340 c.i. V8 with 3 2 barrel carbs. - manufacturer rated at 290 hp.

the 502 powered camaro is a neat car, its all orginal 396 ss, and to keep the motor in it, they used a Lunati stroker kit to get the 502 displacement, it has orginal A/C also :P

the white ss is just a nice car, interior and exterior, and under the hood.

we are finishing what the original owner started, neglected, or did not do.

just for example of some of the things we do, this is the list of things we are going to do to the camaro :

Install LSD (the car has a open differential now, which with the power this car makes, is not a good thing, the original owner overlooked it or could not afford it)

Set and tune the Carb, we use a innovative LM1 wideband o2 meter to tune the cars with, and this car has a rather nice (Demon) carb, and it is running way to rich, and the timing is way off

Re-install the front springs, because the ones on the car are improperly installed, they are not resting on the perches at the top of the tower.

fix the linkage, the shifter linkage is a little off, its not a big deal really, but we want it nice and tight when it leaves.

Install new sway bar bushings, end links, and adjust the traction bars. These are worn out, deteriorated and out of adjustment.

Install new ball joints (upper and lower), new control arm bushings. These are splitting, or the boots are trashed.

Install a new steering gear box, the one in it has way to much play, so the car is getting a new quicker ratio box that should be alot easier to drive as well.

and i am sure there are a few more issues i am forgetting.

after all these problems are addressed i cannot wait to drive it, it should be fantastic!

So beautiful, I've never driven anything muscle, I suppose the nearest I've been is SL55 and 65 AMG, Cayenne Turbo S. I'd love to have a go, it'd have to be manual though. Suprised that some are autos, I know it's the states but the torque those bad boys must make! If MB have to use the old 5 speed auto for the beefier V12 and SC V8s? Those cars are 30 years old!! Wonderful.

the 69 camaro is a very cool car, its a real ss396 car, but as stated earlier its been bored/stroked to 502ci

its also a original A/C car, the only thing i do not like about it is the fact it is a automatic.

Ill have alot more pics of the gt500 since thats my current project, the interior has already been removed, and tuesday the engine/trans will be pulled, then I am welding in new floorpans :)

While the car was in the paint booth, it was time to assemble the "K" member, which holds the front suspension, brakes, and serves as a cradle for the engine. We have a homemade "dolly" that we use to build the the front suspension, brakes, engine, and transmission on, then we lower the body onto the K member, makes it a snap!

it really depends on the car, the condition, and the detail. a basic resto can be as little as 25k for something like a mustang or other popular car

when you get into the complete frame off restos, where the car is completely disassembled it gets into some money. we have done restorations that were as much as 140K for rare, hard to find, small production cars. The average is about 50-65k.

the term restoration is also a very "grey" term. Some shops go over the frame with some spray paint, order new interior, and do a tune up and call it done.

Most restorations we do are much more complex, as you can see in the challenger above, and they can get more complicated when you are dealing with something like a "numbers matching" car.

i dunno the exact count on manhours, but it was 3 people and about 2-3 months, but we were not all focusing on that car, we always have a couple other large projects going on.

we have done a couple injected 426 hemis and they are a blast, we are doing a 44 six-pack car next that will be running 3 two barrel throttle bodies and the same injection setup, so that the owner can still use the original air cleaner, and it will still look somewhat like the original six pack setup. should be a pretty mean engine :)

That is actually a big deal when restoring Pebble Beach and other concours show cars. You have to restore something but also make it look "outdated". The judges often dock points for cars that are restored too well LOL

Sorry for the delay once again, it has been busy as usual.

Here are alot of new pics from the shop. Enjoy!

Some interesting things have came and gone in the shop. Most notably one of two Smokey Yunich prototype Hemi-Headed 302 ex-trans-am race car camaros came into the shop for me to do a little work on. Smokey originally designed and helped Chevrolet build six of these engines and two found their ways into camaros. They produced about 600hp.

The Hemi Roadrunner which has been in the shop for a year (it came to us literally in boxes) Has been completed and delivered to its happy new owner.

The 440 Six Pack 'Cuda (the blue one) fired for the first time since the late seventies last week, and is nearing completion after a year long build.

We have also started work on a one of six produced NASCAR pace car Camaro. These are not to be confused with the Indy Pace Car cars, which are common. These were specially assembled by Chevy for NASCAR (the title shows the owner as "NASCAR" hahah) The six were each decorated up to a certain track, this one happens to be the Wilksboro North Carolina Car. It is going to be a complete nut and bolt concours quality restoration.

We have also Started work on a 56 chevy truck owned by a local professional althete. It will be recieving a built twin-turbo 502 C.I. Engine and a Art Morrison Frame (which is due in monday).

There are many other cars depicted here, I will try to explain what they are/what was done!

1965 World of Wheel Showcar. This car was pretty awesome, and my fav body style. It was in the shop for tuning because the new owner (a prof. athlete) wanted to drive the car. We had found with our wideband that it was running dangerously lean, which meant we installed new carbs (it has a three carb setup) instead of modifying the carbs on the car due to them being date coded carbs from 1965 (makes them worth 3 grand) then we changed the exhaust as per the owners taste and modified the seat mounts to allow 6 more inches of rear slide (hes a big guy)

A Buick Grand National. the last of the great Buick muscle cars. This one was in for some detailing, as it only has 15k miles on it. For those that don't know, the GN had a turbo charged 3.8 liter that was capable of propelling this car into the 13s in the quarter back in the mid 80s.

a 1961 Pontiac Bonniville that was in for alot of suspension and a/c work (the previous installer had mounted the underhood components recklessly which we corrected.) This has a 421 c.i. tri-power engine with the 8 lug wheels and 4 wheel drum brakes.

After a four wheel disc brake conversion, some tuning, rust patching, and some repainting the 64 Sport fury III powered by a Max-Wedge HEMI is on its way to its new owner. This car ran 11s in the quarter without much modification. the Max Wedge Hemis were known for the interesting staggered carb setup utilizing two four barrel carbs sitting atop a wedge shaped intake manifold. They were either 413 cubic inch or 426 cubic inch, this one being a 426.

1968 Chevelle, owned by the previously mentioned athlete, this one we refinished the engine bay, re-wired, installed the EFI computer, and ignition controls. I installed a Moser rear end, and new aftermarket springs/trailing arms. It will be recieving a 800hp supercharged small block at a later date.

Here is a "Sassygrass Green" Challenger T/A. This is a real numbers matching car, and very nice. The only drawback is that it was a automatic car. The Challenger T/A and the Cuda AAR were limited run cars that celebrated Dodge's racing success in the Trans-AM class racing. The 'Cuda AAR stood for "All-American Racers" honoring Dan Gurney. They only produced them for the 1970 year, and production of each was only 2197 units. We actually have a high number of these cars come through here, its very exciting. They 'Cuda AAR and the Challenger T/A were powered by a 340 C.I. high revving V8 that made approx. 290 HP. This car was a direct Competitor to the 69 Camaro z28s that had a 302 C.I. Engine that made 290 HP and could rev to 7000 RPM. Back in the day the AAR and the T/A were the faster on the street due to its larger motor with more torque, but the Z28 was generally faster around the race track in stock form!

Here is a nice 66 mustang. This car has the Shelby style rear windows, and is powered by the K-Code mustang GT engine. We installed a new carb, and a t-5 five speed transmission.

Here are the pics of the Smokey Yunich Camaro.

Driving this car gave me goosebumps. The historical and rareness value of this car is nearly overwhelming! Fantastic showcase of late 60s engineering and great representation of the legend known as Smokey Yunich!

Another interesting fact is that the Valve Covers on this car are magnesium. Jim Hall, the man behind the amazing Chapparall Race cars, had a hand in developing this motor, and the valve covers are identical in design to those used on Chapparall race cars.

Its quite a engine, I can assure you of that. Terrific throttle response, great sound, and a lumpy idle :) Not to mention 600 horsepower out of a small block that was originally developed for Trans-Am racing. Its too bad chevy pulled out of all factory backed racing when the engine was developed, it would have been an ass-kicker.

A pic of the truck I have been building for a pro athlete. It was his grandfathers 56 chevy. So far it has a Art Morrison chassis, 4 link rear end, coilover suspension, the interior will be getting a custom center console, bucket seats, A/C, and a 600 cubic inch twin turbo big block estimated to produce 1200+ hp. I will be done with this by September hopefully.

Me in front of a few cars that are part of a 21 car collection I help take care of. Back there you will see a few notable cars, The silver GTO is 1 or 5 ever made Judge Ram Air 4 cars that is a convertible and a 4 speed. Also you can only see the end but there is the "Thrasher Camaro" which was built in 1999 and generally considered to be the car that started the whole "Pro touring" movement in the muscle car world. The "Thrasher" also won its class twice in the One Lap of America competition. It is powered by a 406 CI small block making approx 600hp, with a suspension to match. The Lime green car is a 1970 Dodge Coronet Hemi, from canada.

Here is a few of the cars we took to GoodGuys Southwest nationals. We were slightly disappointed we did not win "Best Mopar" , we have won it three years running. But rumor had it the judges were tired of Challengers and 'Cudas winning, and we brought one of each hahah. We also brought our 67 GTX Hemi, Our '70 Cuda 440 Six Pack 4 Speed, and our '59 427 El Camino (which I drove with the headers uncapped and open all three days haha). A few customers met us at the show and joined us under our tent, so we also had a 69 camaro with the rare Crossram 302, a '70 GTO convertible, a pro-street style 68 Chevelle, and a 69 Camaro Resto-Mod with a 502.

A customers engine block. Big deal right? this is a date coded 427 aluminum block that once lived in a ultra rare 1969 ZL1 Camaro (only 69 camaros were made with this engine as an option) These blocks regularly sell for 25k. It weighs 90lbs.

So that's where the thrasher Camaro is! I'm going to have to make a road trip to your shop some day. Every time you add on to this thread it's filled with too much muscle-awesomeness for me to express with words. It looks like your shop has quite the reputation seeing how as you get some other types of cars in as well.

Alot of interesting things have been happening, and we have become the shop of choice for many high profile collectors. The thrasher is owned by a collector who was unknown (except to us and a few others) who has 21 cars. He also has a 7k mile ZL1 that is the only remaining (the other is a re-body) RS ZL1, and it has never been touched, a true survivor. He has the #55 ZL1 as well, and a survivor boss 429 with less than 10k miles. All his cars we are getting prepped to be taken to Mecum's new auction in Indy this year. I will ask the collector if I can post some pics, the pic of me with all the vintage signs is just one corner of his collection.

The last owner of the thrasher (Charlie Lillard) drops in the shop occasionally and tells us about some top secret projects that are being built :)

We always welcome visitors, these cars should be seen by everyone!

1. That Mercury Cougar looks like an Eliminator to me.. am I mistaken? 351 was the engine in it...
2. Green Coronette Hemi from Canada... if its a 4 speed, it's sister car is just down the road from me... only 2 of the 14 convertibles have manual transmissions from the factory :)

The cougar Eliminators were available with the 428CJ as well as the 351

The owner of the collection does not own a race track, known (expect a few people) knew he has the cars he has till about a month ago, he is actually located about 1/2 mile from our shop

All three cars (enzo, MC12, Veyron) are owned by one person, a canadian.

The Coronet is an auto, but you are correct, they are quite rare :)
