Well, a few on here know about it, but I thought it is about time I properly publish it!
I am effectively re-building my mk4 Ford Fiesta! Yes yes, I know I will get the 'why don't you just buy another car'. Well, that is boring and I love fiddling around with cars - so this is my project.
A full build diary to date can be found here:
http://www.walish.co.uk/page_projectrs_frameset.htm
To give you an idea of where my car is at:

The car currently only has a few base coats on. They will be rubbed back before the final 'gloss' coats are out on followed by some nice lacquer.
Can't wait to get it back!

speedlines are nice wheels, any plans to paint them in different color? titan-like or white perhaps? :D)

At the moment I have no plans to paint them - There are other things that are taking priority at the moment.
You never know - if I get bored of them.....
Don't think I quite understood your sentence - but, no there will not be one single part of my car that I have not altered/planned out in some way

If we have another NS meet next year - I will bring the car along - with it's new engine  And yes, it will get driven around!
As for wheels colors, they would either go titanium or black. If I eventually turn the car into a track day only thing, I may go 'motorsport white'.
Oooh, remember to leave comments if you have something to say on a particular post. We are sorting out a 'subscription' to the diary; you will then get an email informing you that I have posted something up which means you won't miss a beat 8)
have you decided more on the engine side of things jon? or still in between with the FRS and S3?

That sounds very promising! Where do prices for a passenger ride start?
jon_s

Danny, I am thinking of going down the S3 route at the moment - there is also a possibility of making a 1.7 Turbo from the puma lump (could be very spendy though!)
Once I have recovered from the cost of this re-spray, I will be saving as much as possible until the engine is in.

ohhh those look nice jon.
also the 1.7 puma turbo, that be interesting, there is a guy at zsoc who has one,but ive not asked much about it so i dont know how costly it is,i guess in a way it would be cheaper to put in the car as its a simple drop in.
jon_s
03-17-2007, 12:42 PM
Is that Toby? aka FQTurboPuma
If so, that is who Mark has been talking too about it. As for expense - a LOT. Probably more than the 1.8t.
1k - Garrett GT28RS
2k - Motek management & map
1k - Custom rods & pistons
£500 - Custom manifold
£800 - Low mileage engine
and the list goes on........
yea,its an interesting combo the 1.7 and turbo, but i think for straight out simple upgrade the 1.8t is the better option.should be able source one of those cheap considering there in a million different cars, lol.an S3 one may be more expensive than sourcing a simple 150hp 1.8t

I know! I love them - which, I suppose is a good thing!
Watch this space - they will be on the car by mid April. Wooooo - Can't wait!
Danny - I will be looking for the 225bhp Audi TT engine. There are plenty about. It is just a case of waiting for the combination of my finances and the right engine 8)
lol i constantly try to imagine my car with that power, simply because of how light the fiesta is,its gonna be a great experience,i was taken for a spin in a corsa with a 2 litre dropped in,running about 180hp and the lightness of the car with that power was amazing with even 180hp,so 225hp in a car slightly lighter than the corsa..... :D

I think I will try to keep this thread updated with the major developments, but the real detail will be in the diary. I will try and turn on the subscription element so that people can get an email when I update the diary.
Also, is there anyone who is good with coding? We are really struggling with page numbers. The software is B2Evolution:

Walish Update - problems with my wheels
Bad to hear, why? :(
jon_s
03-21-2007, 06:38 PM
There is a full write up on Walish, but this is what it says [p.s more pics from the bodyshop are up too]
"As always, things don't run quite as smoothly as I would like. I don't think I am fussy, but problems like the one I am about to outline are a bit of a pain to deal with.
Ok, so what I am jabbering on about. Let me start at the beginning. I rang the very helpful and knowledgeable people over at BMTR (see link above) to order my center caps. No problem, brushed alloy thank you very much.
Two minutes later I get an email asking me to call him back. A bit odd, but fair enough. Now, are you sitting down for this one? I am glad I was! Luckily, I had supplied photos of the wheels and the serial number on the box. When David from BMTR read this out to the bloke at Speedline (while ordering the caps) he knew exactly what wheels they were! Very strange considering they all look alike to me.
It transpires that in 2003, this very chap from Speedline took an order for 200 sets of wheels for a one off race series (based around the Ford Focus). However, the race series fell through and 200 sets of wheels flooded the market.
As they are a race wheel, the central hole does not have a recess for the caps to sit in, therefore they will not fit my wheels.
A shame but by no means the end of the world. Well, not the end of the world if that was the only problem - but oooh no there is more.
As is it a requirement for race cars to be equipped with 14mm studs, wheels I have were made to accommodate that. Now the problem is, my car, along with ever other road going Fiesta/Focus has 12mm studs. Therefore as things stand, the wheels are useless. Not only that, as far as I am aware, the wheels will not fit any other road going car in the UK - which by my calculation makes them worthless in the general market.
Solution?
Well, there is a solution, but it is a fairly big decision to make. I can convert my front hubs to accept 14mm studs. It involves drilling them out and sourcing studs from a suitable car. The last resort would be to have studs made up.
There seems to be little point throwing money at converting my rear hubs with the drum brakes to 14mm, therefore I would have to bring forward my rear disc conversion. There is an obvious cost factor in this!
Once I have done this, my wheels should fit. I have asked David from BMTR to give me the name and contact details of his chap at Speedline, as I want to check a few details before I venture down this route.
Drawbacks?
There are a few. The most obvious one is that going down this route means that I not only have custom wheels, I also have custom hubs. Meaning that not only would OZ wheels be out of the equation, the Fox range of wheels I so easily dismissed would also be out of the question! If I damaged a wheel beyond repair I would be searching for a needle in a hay stack to find a replacement. I would have to replace all the wheels and revert back to the standard hubs. This would also cost money as for obvious reasons, you can convert 12mm into 14mm, but you can't go from 14mm to 12mm!
Oh, finally, it may also be possible to have a company mill out the small recess to accept the center caps. That is assuming I understood him correctly on that point. I have to admit, I was slightly distracted when he moved onto the second point.
Is it worth selling?
Probably not. I have probably shot myself in the foot by disclosing all this, as I could have easily just put them up on ebay and not said anything. However, I am an honest chap and given my profession, that would not be advisable.
Anyway. I am not making any rash decisions. I will pick my car up and then decide what to do.
I fully expected to have to deal with this kind of problem when I was doing the engine conversion, but I was not expecting to have to solve this kind of thing on something as simple as wheel selection!
On a brighter note, while I have been typing this, new pics from the bodyshop have been downloading. "

In my experience, car geeks always want the rare stuff, no matter what the cost is. I know someone who imported some wheels from the Netherlands at a hefty cost. I think they were Fisher wheels, but don't quote me on that. All I know is that they were made a billion years ago and in a very limited quantity.
Sell them IMO, there will be someone who wants to be different and will pay to do so. Various tuners always build show cars for magazines and stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if they were interested in them. How many times have you seen a car in a mag, that has a description about some super obscure (therefore cool) part?
So yea, if I were you, I'd sell them. Wheels do break, bend, scratch and get stolen and I wouldn't want to deal with trying to find a replacement. Save the time and money and buy something that fits the standard hubs. Do the rear disc brake anyway, cause it's the right thing to do. :P
666fast is right, its best to sell them now and get some other rims or whatever, you could make them fit at a cost as you say,but what if something happens in the future were you needed a replacement....you could end up waiting a while,or paying another fortune,IMO your best sticking with what we got here in the UK :)

Wheel problem solved. Had a long discussion with Speedline directly today. They have special nuts that let the rally wheel fit safely on a road car!
Glad you solved the problem with your nuts... and without even needing a creme or lotion. ;)

That sounds fine. Mine is costing quite a bit as there was a lot of work in fixing the rear quarter after someone hit it a few years ago. I am paying around £3000. If I had asked for a gun finish it would have been around £2500 - but I have asked for a glass finish which involves around 20 hours of polishing which puts the price up.
Therefore, if has no rear quarter damage and went for a gun finish I would have been looking at around £1800. 8)
My best advice - see some of their work!

jon_s
04-02-2007, 03:48 PM
The fronts are spaced out by the uprated brakes and the rear (where the drums are painted black) have 5mm spacers each side.
The rear arches have had work to allow the car to go lower so I have no clearance problems. The fronts are fine too.
The beauty of coilovers is that I can lift the ride height up a tad if needed, but at the moment I don't need too.

how are you enjoying it so far?

Hopefully there will be nothing 'chav' about my car - it is for that exact reason I painted my rear drums black before the disc conversion.
We worked our arses off over the weekend. I got home from Bristol at 2am in the morning and was up for 6am to goto work.
As I have stated in my Walish diary - there will be no corners cut in this project. Yes, it is costing a fair bit - more than most would spend on a Fezza which is fair enough. But the satisfaction of doing a job well is worth it's weight in gold. 0X
As for power to weight, well by the time I have finished it will be between 250 and 300 bhp/tonne.

It will be based around the Garret GT28RS
is that the turbo used to upgrade the focus RS? think pumaspeed do
jon_s
04-23-2007, 06:10 PM
Toby is running at the 260 mark. In a recent test his Puma Turbo was 4 seconds quicker around a track than a FRS!
I don't know about the FRS upgrade. The turbo can can flow upto 320bhp.

thats the one i was thinkin about

I know it is crude, but Toby's Puma does 0-60 in 5 seconds, so I will be around that mark when done. Here are the pics from ebay:

The full turbo?
I will have the engine in and done by the end of May. the turbo will take another year or so.
thats cool.it will be quite quick with that FRP engine in on its own,lol

Cheers mate - it is good to hear. It is difficult to get across just how much thought has gone into the car. There are many factors behind the FRP (and why I have not gone FRS/1.8t); admittedly the decision was rushed as an opportunity presented its self that I could not turn down.
Once I can motivate myself, I will sit down and write a detailed update to walish 8)

I will enjoy the car for a while as it is - you really can't beat a nicely sorted N/A car.
I will start seriously looking into a well sorted turbo conversion - I mean a really well thought out conversion; not just bolting something on and hoping for the best.
Once it is producing 260bhp I may well have a 2nd car (something sensible like a golf TDi  ) which means I would be free to go a little crazy and more track biased - so who knows.
At the end of the day, I have spent more on this little car than simple logic can explain - I love it; it was my first car so it is close to my heart. I cannot sell it as I would get hardly anything for it - so I may as well keep it and let it evolve over the coming years.
Anything is possible. 8)

I have really enjoyed doing my car. I think the rear beam and petrol tank are the only things left on the car which I have not changed/altered!
The car will now slowly be tweaked. It is not perfect just yet - but I have to have something to keep me occupied. There are numerous finishing touches to make. I will then live with the car and plan/save for the next stage.
It took the car for its first drive on some classic English B-roads - oh dear god, building the car was worth every penny

Well blimey - still on the first page lol - I went to page 4 to look for this thread!! haha
What can I say, I am really loving the car. It has given one or two people a shock I can tell you that! One good thing (bearing in mind future plans) is that there is absolutely no torque steer.
It is funny how, once you do all the main work, the little finishing touches take AGES! I still have to get some interior trim, change the lock on the fuel cap e.t.c All in good time though.
I think I have got used to how quick it is - I am starting to feel the need for more power  Having said that, I followed a brand new BMW 330i down a slip road and kept it honest - we were both tanking it to get past a row of cars. That was good fun. I was expecting it to pull clean away though.
Oddly, the new Golf GTIs at the cars that get pissed with the fez most over here.
The future plans are still there - I am not going to Turbo the Racing engine though. There are only 500 of them and I think that would be sacrilidge! Instead, I am going to buy a normal - run of the mill - 1.7 puma engine. Whack it on an engine stand and start building a Turbo conversion based around the 'disco potato' as it is strangely referred to - or the Garrett GT28RS in normal speak.
Anyway, the car will 100% be at the next NS meet for some of you to see.
What other changes have happened in the land of Jon's cars? Well, we now have a brand new Suzuki Swift thing which is actually a really nice little car for buzzing around London in.
The Saab 95 Aero also died a painful death - the gear box blew up (literally) on a full acceleration out on to a very busy and fast road. Luckily, no one was hurt and no one crash into the car. However, we were a little stuck - we had just bought a brand new car the weekend before (again, literally) so umm, well, we were not expecting to have to buy another one!!
Needs must and all that - another Aero was bought and now graces our drive. I shall get some updated pics up in a day or two....
i replied in your birthday thread asking about this car, didnt realise you posted here.lol
Glad its going good Jon,hopefully i can tag along at the next JW meet and witness this car myself.its good you decided keep this engine as it is
got a question for you though Jon,are you finding 1st gear a problem with it not giving you full power? i dont know if you Know Drew (DrewHughes at zsoc) he has an FRP'd ZS,a black one called the stealth bomber, possibly the nicest looking ZS i seen to be honest, but he cant get first gear to have full power due to the traction control, reckosn he only gets 30% power from 3000rpm onwards and then it takes off in 2nd gear............you have the same problem or not?
jon_s
10-26-2007, 01:43 PM
Nope, but I have disabled TC. The car really does not need it as long as you have decent tyres on.
My first gear is actually really quite strong.

The Focus RS ones went for quite steep money so I let them go. These are off an EVO IX which is being rally prep'd. They have only covered 70 miles from new and only cost me £255 which is a bit of a bargain in my book. I will have to get some custom brackets made up; however I know a good 'lazer dude' as I call him who can knock some up easily.
As for the rears - you are quite right about the slave handbrake caliper. I have looked at Wilwood and they have a few options. I was looking at getting the rear brakes that went with the calipers I bought - there were a few people after them though, so the price went beyond what I was prepared to pay.
All in good time though. The plan is - put the Brembos on the front and see what the balance is like with the current set up. Then I will make a decision with the rears. As soon as you start playing with too many things at once (at least where a balance is concerned) you just don't know where to start in fixing any issues!
I also nearly bought the ECU recently - a Motec M4 Pro with Military spec connections and additional lambada inputs went for £890. Considering it all cost over 2k new - that would have been a good purchase.
0X
niiiiiice jon, gonne rip your shoulder out the socket when those are fitted.lol

ohhhh that be fantastic,id love to check out your car mate.any idea how much you sell them for? my brakes are on there way out so i need some,if you sell at a good price i may just get those from you
jon_s
11-05-2007, 07:16 PM
It all cost me £300 - the discs and pads have had 4 - 5k on them (and are nowhere close to needing replacing) so how does £170 sound? I am in no rush to get the Brembos on so can wait an extra month or so if that would help.
after xmas is would be great, ill see what funds are like around then and when you come to selling ill let you know. :D

We shall find out! I have more chance with the Speedlines as they were designed with brakes in mind. Scooby's with my wheels can fit their 4pots under so I live in hope.
awesome, gonna be fun to find out anyway.you gonna have a rear disc conversion?
BTW a bit OT here but i forgot to mention,i have a set of racing KA rims on my ZS now

Brakes are here - they are huge!
Having said that, they are no wider than the FRP Alcons - I will get some comparison pics up soon....

[just noticed that the new forum does not allow my pics to be viewed two by two - I spent ages sorting out walish to fit in with JW - now JW, sorry, MW has changed! LMAO]

I have done a bit of crude mocking up using FRP brake discs - it looks like I have a bit of room to play with under the wheels. My main concern is now focused on the any modification the caliper may need to get it to fit around the hub - I suspect the ABS reluctor ring may cause a bit of a problem - we shall see. Anyway, some pics:

I will not be the quickest to 178mph (the fastest Fiesta in the UK - http://www.area-six.co.uk/Customer%20Cars.htm ) but hell it will stop!! I am a little more comfortable with the amount of clearance the wheels allow. Time to get the discs and pads then....I don't know if I should the Ford Focus ST170 discs (300mm) or 'special' Brembo ones for Fords which are 305mm.....decisions decisions...

Since uses the british army stand alone ecu's?

Don't quite follow you mate? Do you mean - since when does the British Army use stand alone ECUs?
The Military Spec connections are just completely waterproof e.t.c - the round connection on this Motec M880 is Mil Spec....

The square connectors on these ECUs are the normal - non military spec - connections:

Wow, those brakes are amazing. And that's the way the rims should be, just barely fitting the calipers. 8-)

That is going to look totally awesome once it's mounted up! Congrats on those beautiful Brembo's!

Hehe I think he made a joke Jon....;-)
Doh! Missed that
Been trying to look for brake pads - being a bit of a pain as I am not 100% on what pads they take. When I look up the Brembo site, I should be using pads: 107.4865.80. [ http://tinyurl.com/32z4ph ]
However, when I look up the Brembo uk shop, they say 07.8301.74. [ http://www.bremboshop.co.uk/p1163601.htm ]
Oddly, other sites say that 07.8301.74s are for Alfa's!
On the off chance any of you have access to things I don't, the caliper codes are 20.7187.02

Found some brand new OE Evo XI pads on ebay £100 delivered - a nice saving compared to walking into a dealership! Should have them some time during the week. Just the discs are needed now.
I will be doing a proper mock up, including the brackets e.t.c, in a few weekends time - can't wait :-)
Not the best pic:

what size discs are you able to fit on those calippers? They look very similar to the ones I have in the rear on the RS2

Now for the Brembo story with pictures!
I bought a set of front brakes from A Evo XI which had done 70 miles. The car was being rally prepared and the brakes were being replaced. perfect! £255 later, I was the proud owner of some Evo Brembos.
I measured everything up and was pretty confident that they would fit under the 16s I have with 300 - 305mm discs. So, everything arrived and I started putting it together...
....as you can see from these pics - the pads look like they were made for the 300mm ST170 discs!!
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Padondisc3.jpghttp://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Padondisc2.jpg
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Padondisc1.jpg
I then put the pads in the caliper and made sure the caliper assembly cleared the discs...bingo - everything is looking perfect!
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Caiperondisc2.jpghttp://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Caiperondisc1.jpg
Time to see what the sit like in the wheel.....plenty of room - they clear the spokes with around 5mm to spare!
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Caliperinwheel2.jpghttp://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Caliperinwheel1.jpg
Ok, last hurdle....the hub
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Caliperwithhub2.jpghttp://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Caliperwithhub1.jpg
Things are looking a little tighter than expected. The hub hits the caliper and has still got 40mm to go before it is still home in the disc.
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Closehubcaliper1.jpg
The first option would be to cut away the part of the caliper that is in the way. However, this is very close to the mounting holes and requires the structural webbing of the caliper to be cut through. I have no way of knowing how the brake would react under heavy repeated braking that the Nurburg Ring would inflict on them. It is possible that they could completely sheer off!! This is not a risk I am willing to take just to get some Evo brakes on.
So, any other options? Spacers are a possibility. The above close up of the mounting points is after the disc and wheel have been spaced out. As you can see from below, the spacing on each side would be pretty substantial to say the least! Given that this car will be producing a lot more power in the not to distant future, I am not really willing to put the CVs etc under the additional load that the spacers would put them under. I would spend mosu of my time replacing worn out parts!! Not to mention the fact that my front wheels would then stick out beyond my front wings. The first sign of a large bump at speed I would be saying good buy to my wing and hello to my bodyshop!
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Spacersinwheel2.jpghttp://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Spacersinwheel1.jpg
http://www.walish.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10003/normal_Spacersrequired.jpg
Any other options? Yes, I thought about having the original hubs re-drilled with the mounting points much closer to the body of the hub and cutting off the access which could allow the caliper to slip in. However, the underside of the hub's hangers thickens towards the body. Therefore, if we were to drill new holes there, any bolt the other side may a) simply not for or b) not sit flush with the back of the hangers. Again, this is a safety compromise that I am not willing to take.
Anything else?! Yes! Custom alloy hubs! They would be lighter and I could have the hangers made to my specification. However, an off the shelf alloy fiesta hub is £1,500 (for both sides). That is without any custom work! Little point in exploring that further as the costs is prohibitive.
Not all is lost, as we mocked the smaller Brembo brakes up in the below pic, and they should fit a bit easier! Just need to sell on the Evo stuff (something I could not do if I started to butcher them!) and source a set. I may even just go for the standard Ford ST170 calipers on the front and rear as they are an awesome set up!
