BMW expands Sportvan project: Now there's a 3 Series version planned, too

Sportvans are the next big thing at BMW. In 2005, the Bavarian automaker confirmed it would build a sportvan/MPV/wagon based on the X5 (itself based on the 5 Series). The vehicle was developed under the working title RFK, but we believe it'll be called F5. Now comes word that BMW is planning a similar vehicle based off its 3 Series-called F3-though the company's board hasn't given it the green light, yet. BMW is expected to launch the F5 in mid-2009 and, if approved, the F3 the following year.

Both would be five-door, five-passenger vehicles with rear or all-wheel drive offered. They're designed to be sporty and yet capacious, with ride and handling to BMW sedan standards. They'll eschew larger wheels and tires that add unsprung weight as well as high centers of gravity that diminish ride and handling quality.

Engines in the F3 would likely match standard, non-M3 engines from the 3 Series; the 235-horsepower, 3.0-liter six and the 300-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0. A diesel option for the States, given BMW's plans to sell them here also is a good bet.

I say...it looks sexxy , the design and everything...but a bit useless for a BMW to make it....

I thought the 5-series estate version would have been entirely adequate. Interesting concept, though.

Someone shove it back to whatever crapshute it came out from. BMW has no business building a van. People will buy it like mad, though.

Not the pic. The pic looks great. But the fact that BMW's considering a small van or MPV or whatever is just disgusting.

They already have one. It's called the 1.

You're from Ze Vaterland. You should know.

although i disagree with the idea of making such a car all together (van is NOT a drivers car = very un-bmw), the F3 would beat the pants off the mercedes b-class, its main competitor because it will have RWD. unless they make it fwd, which they shouldnt as it says its supposed to be based off the F5 which is rwd.

very un-BMW indeed. I dont think soccer moms will care how fast they can run a lap at the ring. Bimmer Van=gross. :bad-words:

X5? X3?

And I wouldn't consider the 1-series a pure hatch. It looks like one, but it just seems like a hatchback body forced onto a coupe chassis.

come on, its not that bad. if you undub the car with the term "van," all of a sudden it becomes a badass road trip car.

it looks like what the 1-series should've looked like... a nice renault clio-style hatch. Except with better headroom and legroom.

BMW F330d? Why not? :D

Hell no, not BMW. If this continues, soon we'll hear that it is going to be also FWD.

I highly doubt they'll put together a FWD car when all their marketing trumpets is their RWD prowess.

However... if they do, that's when they can guarantee the purists to chastize them without remorse.

I don't like the way all the premium makes have decided to go out and build all these fanciful models for very specific tastes. Sooner or later, Audi and BMW will have gone well into double digits, and Mercedes will not be far behind in conquering all 26 letters of the alphabet. Yes, the ideas may be worthwhile, but they're not staying true to the spirit of the badge.
