need help not getting busted for downloading

i'm in college and i live in the dorms, connected to the internet via a LAN cable. i download a lot of music on limewire and all sorts of things on bittorrent. one of my friends has gotten a letter about his downloading habbits from the school, threatening to take away his internet.

i have a theory that i could be safe by not connecting to their wireless network, which makes you register with the school. however, i am not sure this theory is valid.

does anyone know how i can keep my bad habbit without getting busted?

My freshman year was the most I heard about kids getting busted for stuff like that..

although, I was running a web server and downloading and uploading about 20+gb a month and never got one notice.

I had a router connected which might of prevented the network admins from scanning my stuff, so that might of helped keep me on the down low.


Either way, they should give you a warning before actually taking action.. so just make sure you have one of those hard drive wiping disks around to make sure no one can get data off of your hard drive ;)

supposedly thats the secret. I need to buy a router and try it out. Our school blocks torrents competley (which really sucks). Supposedly they track your inteternet so ur not looking at pr0n and such, but no one I know has gotten busted or a letter or anything like that. But yea, a router should help block the admins from scanning ur internet usage, im no expert, but thats what ive heard.

what you do is, find out who the system admins are. get COOL with them, take um out for a few beers, get them a stripper, donate your sister to them...whatever the case may be. then start talking about computers, but make sure that they dont know that you know that they are sys admins at the uni...exploit the damn system!

hehe, not to sound like a shithead but I have a feeling that porn is like beer. If all the universities in the world starting really enforcing the rules for either one....they would lose 80% of thier students..........

A router won't help, use traffic encrypting clients, like utorrent. All others they could track your packet streams.

have you tried peer guardian? they have ip's of most colleges and universities blocked from connecting to your computer.

I don't know about your uni, but here at A&M we have a thing called DC++ thats only available on campus. It's a DL'ing program that allows you to DL anything from anyone on the school network. It's incredible, when I was in the dorm last year I could download an entire 2 hour movie in like 15-20 minutes.

Yeah but from what I heard that thing is monitired and you can be busted from that easily.

No one at A&M has been busted for it, plus it's not a school run program. It's run by a student on campus with his own server.

Hell in that case, thats even better. Hopefully the kid aint no undercover.
