My second carshoot: Lotus Exige S

Some guy from the Dutch site rijtesten.nl was stuck without a photographer, so I quickly offered myself and spend an afternoon getting in and out of an Exige S with all my gear.

The car itself is awesome, low, fast, attention-grabbing, etc. 8)

Tell me, did you use some aditional lighting, and what did you do in photoshoop?

Go to almost b&w and emphasise the striking colours, like the steering wheel badge for instance?

Damn Martijn, you are most definitely the master of lighting here on JW. Seeing flash skills really makes me want to spend a few hundred bucks on a SB600.

No, I didn't get paid for this, for 2 reasons:
- this is just my 2nd shoot, I wanna gather some more portfolio-material
- the site doesn't have a budget for it

Sure, I could've been stuborn about getting paid, but then someone else would've done it, leaving me with no money ánd no money.


They're gonna test a Porsche 997 soon, so I hope they'll ask me again. :)

I'm quite intrigued on how you managed to take this one. Owning an Exige myself I know how crampy the space is. You must have a good wide angle lens.

I only used my 24-70 and 50/1.4. Used the 17-35 for the interior-overview without flash. Did take my 70-200 for some longer shots, but didn't get around to using it. Maybe next time.

I did take both a tripod and lightstand for camera/flash. Didn't have to use the tripod, as there was enough light to shoot handheld with a polarizer, and I didn't have to use the lightstand as the tester held the flash for me. I used my 580EX, triggered by a ST-E2, and it never let me down! In case it would, I also had 2 Nikon SB's + radiotriggers with me. :)

Yeah, I had to do quit a trick for this one. I attached a Manfrotto Superclamp + MagicArm to the harness-bar behind the seat, and positioned the camera where the drivers head would be. Used the 17-35 at 17mm, attached a wired remote and shut the door.

Nope, but as we drove around for a few hours going to different locations, I did get to experience some of the sensation from the passenger-seat. 8)

How many times did you bump your head while getting in and out?

I didn't bump my head, but getting in went like this:
- let driver open the door from the inside
- place my gear close to the door
- put my left leg in
- kinda sit in the seat
- pull my right knee up to my chin
- put my right leg inside
- fasten the seatbelt (impossible to do it later)
- pull my tripod-beg inside and put it half between my legs
- pull my camera-backpack inside and put it on my lap
- close the door
- enjoy the ride

I saw these pics before, posted by the test driver. And I said to myself, wow the quality of their pics improved a lot, they must have a new photographer. And now I see it's you! These pics are pro stuff! The way you master the light, and putting the light setting to your hand py using a flash in a proper way, ... I'm speechless. The quality is incredible, it's perfection.

My two favourite type of pics are the ones at sunset and the 3/4 frontal pic in front of the steel building. But I also admire the attention for detail shown in the close-up pics. We could learn a lot from you when it comes to photography! ;)

Congrats on those pictures mate !!! They are just striking.
I like the rather dark atmosphere in your pictures.
It looks like you have the tendency to shoot pictures with a dark and/or raw character. Which appeals me alot :-)
