European PS3 Launch March 23

UK, January 24, 2007 - Sony has announced that - wait for it - it's set to announce full European launch details for the PlayStation 3 on the dot at midnight tonight, GMT.

Depending how eager you are to learn when it's out, how much for and what you can expect to be playing at launch, we'd suggest either propping your eyelids open with matches, chugging back the caffeine and heading over to the IGN European Gaming Lobby to slather in feverish anticipation, or do the sensible thing, have a good night's kip then check back on IGN first thing tomorrow.

Over 30 Titles for Launch Period
1 Million units forecast for Initial European Launch Period

London, 24 January 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425.

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period to all SCEE territories.

SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world’s leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games
will debut on the PLAYSTATION®Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken®: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo® HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo® HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.

Also available on the PLAYSTATION®Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor™ and flOw™, designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.

Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.

A huge pity and let down.

I think Micro$haft and $ony have lost sight of the reality of the "gaming industry" and somehow think it is really this 24-hour cash cow worth a trillion zillion schmillion dollars.

In reality they may have reached saturation point and its downhill from this poitn on. Limited choice, high prices and high dependence on internet connectivity will be their ultimate "downfall" probably.

Consoles are meant to be relatively cheap, simple to use and not require you to chase an upgrade path.

Remember when the DotCom bubble burts and the energy trading bubble burst? The 'Games are our Cashflow Future" bubble is abotu due for a deflation ;)

450 quid, 50 and 60 bucks per game - requirements to download updates weekly... what a poor showing.

This goes for XBox360 and PS3.

PS2, GameCube and XBox probably represented the high point of user friendly, fast, simple to use and abuse Gaming Consoles.

Advance orders for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console have broken all records, with high street stalwart Woolworths revealing it has been taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week.

The state-of-the-art PlayStation 3 will go head-to-head with Microsoft's Xbox 360 when it hits the shops on March 23 and Woolies, one of the first stores to accept pre-orders, has admitted it has been staggered by the demand.

Gerry Berkley, Woolworths' head of games, said, "It's the hottest gaming system since the PS2 launched in 2000 - demand will outstrip supply."

With a retail price of £425, the 60Gb PlayStation 3 costs £125 more in the UK than in the US, but this has failed to deter those determined to try out Sony's latest dream machine.
