I have just decided I need to own this car.

Aside from the insurance cost, does anyone know anything about any problems from which they suffer?

I think the biggest problem is getting hold of one. At least they are super rare here in Sweden. I know the King owns one.

If you're a sucker for the E28 it might take some time but there are alot of E34 M5:s out there at various prices. I guess the E28 is more of a collectable than the E34.

I know, there are tons of E34s and E39s, the E39 is especially good value, I've seen them in the UK at 11K with about 85,000 miles. A lot of car for the money.

The E28 is so beautiful though. Handbuilt like the E34.

They tend to be mostly auto though don't they?

pitfield
01-15-2007, 01:12 PM
My apologies, justthat some I have seen listed say they are automatic, having closely inspectedthe interior photo you can see they're manual.

I had thought it weird that an M product would have an autobox.

I'm not sure if I agree that it's a better looking car though.

^ you need to be careful about the E24 6 series. The M6 was only made for one year in that generation and i want to say it was 1988.

635csi is nice but still u can find m6 for good money, im not telling u that its easy, anyway price of this car is going to rise so its good investment, i know one owner of 6 series and u need to be carefull on body, because in bad weather this car had problems with rust

Personally, I'd go for the E28: I've always liked the boxy design of the 80's saloons, especially when they come with over 200hp and are made in the BMW factory  and looks super cool now!

After the E30 M3 Sport Evolution and the M1, the E28 M5 comes third as the most desirable bimmer in my book! :D

I like Boxy sedans too (reliable ones, mind you) like the M5 and E30

But OK, I'd like sooo much to have a 507 sitting in my garage.... Classic Goertz design..

Though i'd go with a Z8 too..no problems

I had an E34 M5 and my friend had an E28 M5. The motors are the same I believe...the S38. High 200bhp for the E28 and low 300 with the E34. They're wonderful cars, but alas, they are getting up there in age. The key to these cars, as with most German cars, is to have a complete maintenance history. Any prior owner worth their lick, will have all the maintenance history on their car. Cutting corners and not doing regular maintenance can lead to a problem car that will take you loads of money to bring back up into proper shape...if you can even get there.

I would expect any car in today's market to have/or need a new suspension, including shocks and bushings and maybe new springs. The chain tensioner is known to go out around 100k miles and should have been address already...at the time the water pump was done at around 70k miles. The water pump should have been updated to the E36 M3 waterpump with metal impellers as the OEM plastic impellered one is known for failing and causing catostrophic failure of the motor.

All the E28 and E34 M5 motors are loose and will burn about 1 quart of oil every 1-1.5k miles, but you should not have oil build up on the bumpers. The rear differential will "sweat" or "weep" and if it's dripping, should be addressed. The motor mounts may need to be addressed shortly and the bushings in the shifter could use replacing with a nice UUC short shifter (full kit).

The headlights and foglights will likely be yellowing and could probably use a fresh set. The leather may need re-dying if faded or cracked. A replacement steering wheel might be needed (E28 is a standard 3 spoker while the E34 is an airbag 4 spoker - at least in the US).

The cars are absolutely amazing and sonorous under acceleration. Very few cars can match the music out of either of these motors. The E34 was the last of the handbuilt M cars and the E28 is the original fox in sheeps clothing, coming in any color you want, so long as it's black.

Good luck with your search. It will pay in the long run to shop for the right one...with the right history. And in these cars...you definately get what you pay for...so, budget for it...and get the best one you can buy...and work on updating and replacing parts as you enjoy ownership.

I saw one stock E28 M5 dynoed last summer, 290hp said the dyno(286hp stock and 260 if US version). So those cars have nice bunch of horses, the car really was bone stock and had plenty of miles.

But some say that the 24valve engine is a bit too much for E28, that 12valve M535i had nicer balance. That is the opinion of one TG article also.

Mine is with the 12valve M30 engine, and canīt say a bad worth about the handling, it just needs blowers, and if I am going to keep the car, it will have them ;) 1bar should be enough for me. You know one can fit quite huge tires to E28 to, mine used to roll with 17" x 10. So traction is no problem with the locking diff.

E28 M5's in Right Hand Drive are super rare, only 200-300 built I think, but they are also super cool.

Not sure that E30 M3's are twice the price they were a couple of years ago, although hope so as I have a gleaming example in my garage.

Finally...

Here she is, exactly 20 years in February since she rolled of the production line, I always dreamed of owning one when I was a schoolboy, when I did finally get one all I can say is it didn't dissapoint, the handling is superb, I make at least one trip to the Nurburgring each year and that car was just built to be driven round that place.
