God damn Microsoft is already coming out with a "new" console?
Also I wonder why they want to do 1080p when Microsoft though Sony was stupid for thinking it was possible to do 1080p gaming.
If you dont believe me then just look up a few gaming sites or google or something. :P
Too little too late... there are many XBox360 adopters who wont buy a new console from Micro$haft this soon after the last.

I have to agree with RC, even with a newer cooler processor and an HDMI port, Im not going to get a "new" 360 as mine is only a year old. I'm getting the extended warrenty when I get mine back from microsoft so maybe if it breaks again they will start giving out the 2nd gen box

Interesting Stats. I didn't know the Wii had so over 2 million in a bit over a month. I wonder how that will keep up?
Also, I wonder will the PS3 pick up after blue lasers are more available? Or are the prices for PS3 still too expensive?

The PS3 doesn’t have any must have games on the market yet. When that happens sale numbers will increase.

Of course, by Sony had a HUGE problem having enough lasers for the Blu-Ray player as well this Christmas season, so I wonder how much did that harm their numbers.

Well what I think is that this will be just a "slimer" Xbox360. Like the slim PS2.
I predict this "new" and "improved" 360 will feature a bigger HDD, HD DVD STANDARD, 1080p VIA HDMI and Maybe intergrated wireless and bluetooth but other than the last two everything else will be in is what I predict along with maybe a thinner design.
Whats everyone else's opinion?

Yeah really. I am VERY happy that Sony put HDMI in both versions of their PS3's or else they would be bastards just like Micro$oft. I have a feeling that HDMI and HD DVD WILL be in before the end of this year because if they want to compete in the HD era they cant/wont be able to win or even compete with Sony if they dont....now the Wii.....thats another story...hopefully everyone will just get tired....or else Sony and maybe MS are gonna be not in first place.

This will simply alienate more people from Microsoft and the XBox360.
Consumers will not appreciate being forced to replace the XBox360 so soon after launch.
Very short sighted of Microsoft.

If this thing is priced anywhere near the current Premium 360, shit will hit the fan.
I think they need to work on a way to convert current 360's to use HDMI. If it can even be done anyway, as I sure don't see how they would.

Folks, MS is not releasing this to be a new console for everyone to purchase. This is being realeaed because the current cpu runs too damn hot and this 65nm waffer is more efficient and cheaper to produce. It wont be any faster.
The HDMI and possbile inclusion of a 120GB HD is also a reason. And its a damn good reason especially because of the fact that it will probably cost the same or MAYBE a tad more than the current premium package.
If this is released at 400 bucks, it will make it harder on Sony to win this battle because of 120 Gigs and games look fairly similar because of developers with a 200 buck savings will look good to consumers.
I have this whole console war scoped out, and I could really type a lot of shit about it...........i just may start a new thread because I have a really massive theory thought out.
Short hand version - Right now Sony still has the upper hand, but if some developers for Sony decide to go the non-PS3-exclusive-route, then MS just may catch Sony in the middle of their dominance.
If i get time I will write my story.

I know that everyone is bitching now that has a 360 about the HDMI shit, and how the PS3 is better because the graphics are better and has the blu-ray and such. But to the casual gamer (like myself) who looks at games and price. Its all about marketing.
Also, its not like the new 360 will feature better graphics or a faster processer and such, so its not leaving the "old" 360s out in the dark. As some people have said, its the same as the "slim" PS2 and such, the "old" PS2 will still play the games that the "new" one plays.
I'm not that mad about the "new" 360 being released, thats part of the risk you take getting a console so early in its lifespan, it WILL be upgraded! Also, as a casual gamer, teh HDMI makes no difference to me, the only thing that upsets me is the cooler processer.
so what is wrong with the current output of the current 360? i understand the heat issuse, b/c i have a cooler fan that the 360 sits on and i put a digital thermometer at the exhuast fan and played a game of madden 07 with my dad. right after we finished the game the temp was 116 degrees F. but i have never had my 360 melt (aka feeze) during game play. but i know that can not be good for the life of the 360.

To clear somethings up.
Micro$oft is not releasing a whole new console, they are releaseing (supposly) a "better" and what it should have been from the beginning Xbox360.
I believe the reason why they are doing this is as TNT said because of the Heat, HDMI, and HDD issueies.
Also rave426 if M$ puts a 120gig HDD I think Sony will step up their game and put 60 gigs in the low end model and probably 100-200 something gigs (Hopefully) in the high end model or hell even better just get rid of both models and just have only one model. Although the chances of this are very slim.
The point is that the slim PS2 did not show up in 2000 when the PS2 was only a year old.
To release an XB360 now with extra connectors and upgraded components that are substantially better than the current model clearly shows M$ has no idea how to manage and make money from the "console market".
The console consumer (and there are many more millions of them than PC consumers) is NOT interested in buying a new box every year from the same vendor.
Period.
The argument FOR a console is that it is a simgle platform that is good enouhg to remain constant for 4 or more years - not somethign to be replaced every year.
M$ will alienate millions of potentail repeat customers if they fuck us all over wit a "better" model and no way to add the same connectors to the existing boxes.
Hard drive size is a moot point at this time as the PS3 is self-upgradable, not so with the XB360.
imho xo is the best console at the moment, reliability has been quite bad, and if this 2nd edition has also the new spec gpu, reliability problems could be also solved. Late spring, early summer has been what i heard before for that to happen, well we will see soonish.

What you said is 100% true(as usual)
But what really has me worried is what if Sony loses almost all of their Exclusives? I mean I have heard like 5+ exclusive titles for the PS3 that will be coming to the 360 now. This would kill Sony. Also that another reason why I think the PS3 is not doing too well rite now because the lack of games and not many developers are wanting to push the hardware on the PS3. For example EA recently said that they were barely using 20% of the PS3's power! Thats just crazy. Hopefully we get more dedicated developers like Pholyphany Digital that use the PS3 to a good limit. Currently rurmors are that GT5 will only use 40-50% of total PS3 power.

Hit the nail bang on the head, MS has fucked up big time if they're planning to go ahead with this and i'm pretty sure 9 million customers are going to waste another 400 smackers on a console within a year of buying the current one. One thoery is to return your old one pay a bit extra to get the new but then what is MS going to do with million returned consoles.

And what about my saved games and images and videos on my current hard drive?
Unless they provide a plug and play solution, I foresee chaos.
N64 was just that, DreamCast, GameCube, PS1, PS2 etc... they are a console, not and upgradeable PC box.
M$ is missing the boat big time on the concept of a "closed engineered box" that has an extended life span. Thsi is what my view of a console.
Not a device to be continually upgraded and tinkered with and tweaked. Thats what the PC is for, because I want to choose the make model and tye of upgrade parts.
stupid microsoft.to be quite honest i aint that bothered about the hdmi, its the bigger hard drive.but i was just thinking, when these 20 gig ones get full.what do we do? coz we cant just buy another hard drive (like this 120 gig one) and just carry on with your current gamertag and xbox live account can we

The VGA & component cables of the current 360 can already do 1080p. Adding HDMI isnt much of an incentive to get another 360 but the smaller/cooler chip is a good incentive if noise, heat and power consumption are consideration. HDMI's useful if you want less cable clutter to a single wire, want a purely digital signal and if HDCP is already required.
Based on this article (http://arstechnica.com/articles/headstart.ars) the PS3 doesnt have a built-in hardware scaler making em suck on HDTVs without hardware scalers.

Based on this article (http://arstechnica.com/articles/headstart.ars) the PS3 doesnt have a built-in hardware scaler making em suck on HDTVs without hardware scalers.
Read the article -
For the 360 that means the VGA cable, which is currently the only way the system can output 1080p;
I have already validated this with my XBox360.
The few people who claim the XBox360 can do 1080p via componant cable must have one of the few, and rapidly going out of fashion Westinghouse HDTV's that support 1080p via componant.
Almost to a T new HDTV's restrict the componant input to 1080i to meet copy proteciton legal specs.
Reserving 1080p for the HDMI cable.
I am returning some hardware today that is a componant -> DVI conneciton, and no-go with 1080p.
This does leave the XBox360 to be connected via the PC connection, which is a disadvantage - because on larger screens the refresh rate has the display a few inhes smaller than the LCD itself, which leaves a black border around the edge of the image - not great to have you game display potentially burn in your display.
I am also a little skeptical about the technical content of that article and will reply a little later after some testing. If a display can accept an input, it will display it at its native resolution - period.
What the image looks like will always be a result of the quality of the scaling solution... the fact is a $500 game console will never include scaler hardware that is any better than a TV - as the huge expense of modern TV's is reflected in part in these complex components.
In other words - you get what you pay for.
I forgot to add... there are few 1080p XBox titles, and HD-DVD is 1080i max res - not 1080p... ;) So the premice of that article is all based on the superior upscaling that the Sony TV did for Microsoft.. not the other way round ;)
