6, yes 600 HP

Except for an SR-71 Blackbird or a Saturn V rocket, the Dodge Viper is the absolute last vehicle that needs any more power. So naturally, the sick bastards at Chrysler's SRT unit (that's Street and Racing Technology) have given the 2008 Dodge Viper more power. A lot more power.......

This is going to be serious threat on the streets now -- GM will need to find another 100hp in the Z06 to keep street cred alive ;)

Nice to read that SRT team did this achievement without a need of a supercharger blower.

Not really. More like another 50HP. The current SRT-10 is about 3-400LBS heavier. Chances are this 08 one will be heavier than the current one. So the Z06 does not need to get to 600HP to mach the SRT-10 because of its lighter weight.

Mopar will have a hard time keeping up with the factory modified Z06. We keep hearing that they will be supercharging this thing but no one knows for sure. If the HO Vette is supercharged and the Viper isn't, it would give the viper guys bragging rights.

I'm wondering if its still drives like a Lorry!!! :PSupposedly the new ones are very decent drives if 5th Gear or Top Gear reviews are to be believed (i.e. they can take corners just fine).

I wish they'd spend just a few thousand dollars extra to add some leather and aluminium to where there's all that plastic inside. So little can bring so much more, and silence many of the European critics that will immediately go yapping on about the "creaky plastic interior"...

Yeah we did - but you know what? The Viper may be a difficult car to drive fast that requires immense skill to use correctly, but it doesn't make it a 'bad" car.. just too complicated for the co,puter-euro's to master.. ;)

See the veyron for exhibit 1.. :P

It sure will giving bragging rights to the Viper boys.. as a pair of hair driers on the new bigger V10 will make probably put down 2000hp ;)

The sad reality is that GM would pobably saddle a super charged Z06 with pistons, rods and transmission that would barely handle the boost and power of say 650hp....

So a simple pulley swap would grenade the motor instead of giving you 800hp hehe ;)

IIRC, I read somewhere that the engine has been detuned. It's capable of over 900bhp without forced induction.

I've always liked Vipers and they seem to be getting better and better.

The viper actually is a very quick car around a race track. It is extremely difficult to drive fast though, it will bite you bad if you screw up. You can't blame dodge for upping the power, they had to complete with the z06 which is currently faster, cheaper, and at least relatively more luxurious.

Still its a acquired taste and I wouldnt buy one.

Exibit 3a
Power/weight ratio. Displacement simply reduces wear on individual parts. Everything else is ansilary.

Exibit 3b
German cars most prefered on JW? Mercedes SL 65 AMG. Displacement? 6 liters. Power 604. charged air... Twin turbo. What is in place of displacement? Charged air. Single overhead camshafts, slow revving huge torque. on board a fat pig @ 4,300 lbs

Exibit 3c
The epitome of German Engine building at AMG: 7.3 Liter V12 in C12S form : 555 claimed HP (yet quite slower then the old Jag XJ220 that weighs more... curious) power/liter? 76 hp/liter rising to 82 hp/liter in the Zonda F with DOHC and 12 cylinders, aluminum block.

Exibit 4a
10 cylinder pushrod V10 in SRT-10 (2008) makes 600 hp @ 8.4 liters coming in at 71 hp/liter aluminum block... doesn't seem that far off the Zonda's pace, now does it? It doesn't have CF everything, nor is it hand built in Italy. Cheaply made, superb go-fast for fun.

Exibit 4b
5.4 Liter DOHC Supercharged Ford engine: 550 claimed hp, 535 RWHP (dyno proven, estimated 600 SAE HP) hp/liter? 111, no turbo lag ;) All aluminum.

Exibit 4c
7.0 Liter Pushrod v8, N/A 505 claimed hp, 435 RWHP (about 515 SAE) 72 hp/liter.... again, coming awfully close to Zonda ratios here.

Exibit 4d
4.7 liter Ford Racing block designed in Lansing michigan DOT legal for supercar with supercharger in Sweeden; 806 hp 171 hp/liter

Exibit 4e
7.0 liter Ford Racing block designed by Saleen. Pushrod v8. 550hp N/A 78 hp/liter. twin turbo stage1 750 hp 107hp/liter, twin turbo stage 3 143 hp/liter @1000 hp.

Bugatti Veyron
8.0 liter DOHC W16 quad turbo. 1001 hp 125hp/liter

I guess the Americans really arn't doing that bad in terms of power ratios... however... all our cars have torque too ;) "power sells cars, torque wins races" ;)

Imagine what any automotive engineer could do with a 7 liter engine if they final price of the car didn't matter.
They do hve to sell these things you know.

I'll say it again, the engine has been detuned. Naturally aspirated, it's capable of over 900bhp.

I was not the one starting the numbers rallie here, Im just giving the numbers on one engine...its your own crew Gray starting it, what was the reason for putting up these numbers then...if not for comparison?

I see that with an 7 liter ford racing block Saleen are capaable of making the same numbers when putting twin turbos on it as this Audi engine from the early ninties (wich basicly are the same engine as the ones from the mid 80`s)

I am pretty confident that the Audi engine are more reliable than that saleen v8 twin turboed 7 liter engine too....

Actually, it was Stoopie who did, and made a stupid remark, and I displayed how innacurate such remarks really are

oh, and why not make that 7 liter racing block go 900 hp N/A ? its something called streetable hp... such cams aren't for loping around you know ;)

oh, and 140 hp/liter doesn't really mean anything until you have at least 2.5 liters to play with. There is simply more potential in bigger motors with similar amounts of hi-tech in them.

hell, the F boys, the Germans, and the Brittish are all upping displacement these days, so i have no clue why this silly and pointless argument still continues.

But... when I do see it, I'll call it out each time

Absolutely right!

Stoopie thinks they'll just make a car with an engine that has 900BHP. Hello! what about the other parts??

Thats why they detune it, like Nth said it has to be able to go on the normal streets without blowing up/breaking down the engine every 500 yards.

Thats why the Veyron is so expensive, expensive materials....

Well with some different cams headers and exhaust it will probably make quite a few more ponies why not unleash them then?
Its not that it would cost that much more to make those extra ponies and when you shell out the money for an new viper a few more grand doesnt mean shit IMO.....

They don't unleash them now so they can sell it to you later. They do have their own aftermarket program.
Anyone who needs or ants more power is going to do it themselves. I'm sure Dodge is fully aware of this, so why make everyone pay more because a handfull of people want more out of it?

Ok of course it doesnt matter since its not big enough for you, sorry didnt remeber that you and RC set the standars of what mean anything and not, I`ll try and remember for later....

Audi RS4 engine 140hp/liter thats 2,7 so I guess that would be ok.....

of course its a big enough engine ;) but you obviously missed the point.
