Well, due to some really fortunate circumstances I had $700.00 to piss away.. so I emptied my bladder on a PS3.
Needless to say, the first thing we did was download GTHD.
Yeah, yeah, yeah - great visuals... but I tried so hard to like the "game" itself.... sadly it is a pre-pre-pre-pre-beta piece of junk.
Looks stunning, sounds mediocre and controls are worse than a 10 year old keyboard game.
No
Force Feed Back
Support
For
DFP
or
G25
Yes... you read that correctly...
The wheel feels like a suped up powersteering from a Camry... you spend the first 30 minutes over correcting... till eventually you master the 'control" of the steering wheel and the "game" gets ok.
PD should not have released this pre-beta without FFB support.
If its an option to enable it, I could not find it.
The PS3 sees the DFP and the G25 and do the whole spinning an calibration thing... right up until you click the Checkered Flag to start the round.. and then the wheel goes as limp as a deflated penis...
Again - the visuals are stunning - but what a dissapointment for "game" itself... I mean even just "feedback" to stiffen up the wheel would be nice.
Of course if put the 599 in Veyron mode with all aids turned on and change from simulaiotn to amatuer steering you can drive like Schumi... well the game drives you and all do you is stab the gas as if you were driving a Veyron... :P ;)
Anway - off to play Need For Speed Carbon on the PS3... its more fun ;) :P
p.s. I am ranked 424th in the world with the Lancer Evo IX GSR ;)

i can't beleive u bought a ps3
It just sorta happened.. ;)
Everyone keeps sayign they are in short supply, so I was at Fry's buying some other crap and as I walked past the guy in the Console seciton I casually said "I know you don't have any and must get asked like 100 times a day how much the PS3's are..."
He says "Actually no-one asks cause they think we dont have any - we have 25 in stock and 25 coming next week... what you want? a $499.99 20GB verison or the $599.99 60GB one?"
I ended up with the $499.99 20GB version a component cable and couple of games.. ;)
Oh an GTHD is not that bad, its just the lack of stiffness / feel in the wheel really dissapoints... so I hope they have a patch at least for that bit.
If you look past the sucky controls, the so-so sound, the single track and 20 cars (10 stock and 10 tuned) its about as good as GT3 ;) :P - but wuth really good graphics hehe

Not suprised..
Hopefully the lack of development in GTHD gives them enough time to make GT5 with everything we want ;)
Oh well, looks like no Force Feedback on PS3... Sony is embroiled in the same fight with Immersion that Microsoft lost when we had no FFB on the XBox and only limited support on the XBox360.
That's it folks - no FFB for Sony hardware and software...
Looks like the PS3 is going onto eBay, as any future titles without FFB will be a bust.. :(

I'm sorry to say, you should return your PS3, then. Because the new Six-Axis motion sensor controller is incompatible with vibration right now. Sony did announce that the new one will be sold in couple of year's time, but not at the PS3 launch, so oh well. :? And as for force feedback for a special console wheel or something, I dunno. They could possibly release a patch that you can download.

Yes, in short, Immersion is more interested in making money via litigation with Sony than actially selling product in the market place.
Sony on the other hand is more interested in selling BlueRay playes and HD TV's than actually continuing the "entertainment" path created by PS1 and PS2.
Even the new Formula 1 racing game for PS3 is going ahead without FFB development... strange how this dirty little secret wasn't in the advertisment brocures...
And sadly the Japanese verison 1.0 download of GTHD had full FFB support, but Sony replaced that download with a V1.1 2 days ago that has no FFB support.
The hardware and software can support it - but the lawyers don't want anyone to use it... :x

Congrats RC, is really strange you could actually get one. Last week I was in Mcallen, couse Texas is 2 hours from my hometown, and they told me everywhere that the new supply of PS3s for America where coming till next year. And is almost impossible to get one here in Mexico, the prices range between 1,000 Usd and 1,500 Usd.
And how about comparing it to the XBOX 360? is there a lot of difference in graphics? which console do you prefer the most?
Just to be clear, there is NO shortage of PS3's - it's all hype, they are on sale everywhere, but it seems the reality is that Rumbling controllers and Force Feedbacking wheels are not available. :(
No "hit" when you play Madden NFL as the controller has no rumble mechanism...
Sorry guys... PS3 is just as much of a sell-out as the XBox360... :(
Its a "mulit-media" platform, but all in all is more hype than reality.
The same way the XBox360 doesnt do anything extra "game play" related that the XBox doesnt already do - the big news is the "online" support.

Bingo...
And I will verify later today, but rumour is that even GT3 and GT4 will have NO Force Feedback wehn played on the PS3...
This is a big deal, and not reasily advertised or known.
Playing Tigerwoods PGA without "feeling" the hit of of the drive is a total bust... no rumble from a "slam dunk" in NBA...
Thank the lawyers for this one folks.
The PS3 does support FFB, it has simply been blocked via software until further notice.
Go figure; hopefully you turn a profit on that Piece of Scrap 3 ;)
I'll try but won't count on it - the folks at Fry's showed me 12 returned systems - returned unopened after people failed to sell them on ebay ;) hehe

Yeah, here in the Bay Area, it is harder to get a Wii than a PS3. My friend was down at the Sony Store (Metron) the other day and they had about 60 of them in stock.
On CL you could see people trying to get the Wii by trading straight up with the PS3, brand new, unopened.
- - -
About the controller, I wonder if it is possible to use the PS2 control w/ the rumble?
It seems like Immersion would rather license the "technology" to Sony, but Sony doesn't want to give in.

I think that Playstation3 is just going through the same sort of bs that all launching consoles have to go through - the media hypes the system up before it's even out, talking about all the great titles that will be on it and all the crazy space age things the new hardware will be able to pull off. Then the company finds out they can't quite deliver what they said they would to the magazines, etc. the previous year. But then the console launches early anyway because delaying it another year would kill the company if their 2 main competitors have had next gen. systems out already for years in Microsoft's case.
So with the launch everyone's disappointed because the only game on PS3 that's any good that they couldn't get on their 360 Box is Resistance: Fall of Man and beyond that everything else is buggy.
A year ago I was kicking myself in the ass for spending so much money on a new HDTV so I could play my $400 Xbox "the right way." But now that stronger games (that were supposed to be launch titles :)) are coming out it's becomming more fun.
Give PS3 a year and I think it'll shape out. That's when I'll buy one!

These issues are not launch "technology" issues, they are "legality" issues.. and SOny has chosen to not play along - the result is less funtional features than a PS1... ;)

I have seen some writings about Forza not having FFB either.. at least not at the level we would want.
Something about no-one having the license to make FFB hardware for the XBox... its all still psuedo FFB by way of "rumble motors"
Really screwed up if you ask me...
Here we are at the technological dawn of astounding hardware and software possibilities and both the XBox360 and PS3 dissapoint in the worst way possible.
Pity PD doesn't ditch Sony and port the GT franchise to PC... ;)

You are wrong.
And pwned for posting a 3 day old screen shot of the Japanese V1.0 release.
The Japanese version 1.1 update REMOVED FFB.
The US V1.1 has NO FFB.
Sony MAY NOT include FFB support in any title they release until they PAY Immersion Inc license fees.
:)
If you have a Japanese V1.0 download on YOUR PS3, do not upgrade it - you will lose FFB.
You do have a PS3 right?

This whole FFB issue seems like it will effect the PS3 way too much for them to not pay for the rights to use it.
I didn't even think about force feed back wheels, I just thought they couldnt have a rumble controller.
Since all of the hardware does still support FFB, I'm sure Sony will cough up the money or hackers will find a way ;)

Two words: Nintendo Wii !
Or one: PC
Oh, one more thing....
You don't need the "$100 more Memory Card" enabled PS3.. just plug the card into a USB Card Caddy and plug the caddy into a USB port - and hey presto... you are looking at your Digipics on the TV.
And a regular USB keyboard, mouse and even hub all work out of the box.
And yet another - the built in Web Browser supports plugins etc.
I am browsing JW form the PS3 at the moment... that's right folks... this message is coming to you courtesy of Uncle Sony... :)

Well - that depends on whether you want to hear how you can browse your Hotmail via the PS3, and then even save attachments to a USB memory stick?
You have to give Sony credit... while they screwed up big time with the non-FFB thing... they got the "Internet Device" pieces right.
I thought you were supposed to be able to do this with the XBox360, but I never could get USB peripherals to work with it.
+1 to Sony -5 to M$ ;)
And again, this was posted via PS3 from the couch on the BigScreen TV :P

This message is coming to you from an Apple (with a heroin addiction.)
Yeah - I guess it really is Pics or STFU after all - right? ;)
The "Photo Album" slide show when you plug a USB Card Caddy with Digipics is freaking cool.
It plays an animation that has all your images appear as Poloroids, slides and 4x3 prints and drop onto a white work table surface - like you would toss out your photos from a shoe box and sort them out.
You can zoom in and check them out... really neat feature that had everyone gathering round to see the pics. It even has a little hand ritten postit style date stamp for the images you are slide showing.
The web browser is really intuitive and simple to you use.
Of course, I dont have an HD telly, so I am stuck with 720x480 pixels, but HD would get the full width screen.
I have viewed YouTube videos, downloaded attachments and searched Google.
Now Sony just needs to pay royalties to use FFB and this console will be freaking perfect.
p.s. - anyone want to buy a lightly used XBox360 and a some agmes? ;) :P

Update:
You can easily get your PS2 memory card saves to the PS3 hardrive - $15 USB PS2 memory card adapter, and problem solved.
You can play PS2 games (of course ;)) and GT4 has full FFB support with the G25 and DFP.
You can play audio CD's, and when you insert the CD, the PS3 offers to download the Arist and Track info from Al Gore's Interwebs for you.. ;)
The player also supports DVD with ease and is in fact easier to use than the DVD player.. ;)
Oh - and in a back to back comparison GT4 kinda looks like crap compared to GTHD.. man we are getting spoiled :)

Uhm - that was the entire point of my comment.
It was the power of Windows that allowed that to happen - as until that point in time there had never been consumer/commercial success as the phenomenon called Windows.
So it WAS the power of Windows.. had APple had the brains they could have been the commercial success ... but they weren't, so they aren't. Windows is king... :P
BTW, just connected a USB wireless keyboard mouse combo.. works like a champ. Next test will be a USB harddrive.
Looks like Sony have the USB support thing covered.
Windows may be the commercial king, but XBox360 is a technical disaster compared to PS3.
Not yet sure what videos can all be directl viewed - for sure the MP4's my Kodak digicam takes are not supported.
also I will be returning the RF wireless KB tomorrow.. interferes with the RF signal of the PS3 controller.
So I dug out an old Compaq IR wireless keyboard/track ball from 1998 - used SP2-connector to USB adapter Y-cable and it works.. like a champ.
I hate the XBox360 more with every hour ;)
But - the wife finally showed an interest in and HD TV today.. she has an eye on a 73" Mitsubishi super-duper jon.. 1080p and the works.
So depending how good this soming quarter is, i have "permission" for us to upgrade our aging Mistu Diamondscan 60" ;)

Uhm exactly how do you think the blue-teeth travel around the room?
Why its RF.. ;)
SO far all PS2 and PS1 titles I tried worked.. I dug up my old PC Logitech Momo FFB wheel, the one with the thick contoured rubber wheel and stick shift (only 200 degrees of rotaiton) but the good news is that its FFB motor is activated during really extreme turns.. so it actually works quite well with GTHD.
Did I already mention that the G25 works properly with GT4?

My bro has the Wii and its ok but definatly not aw-inspiring but definatly good technology to think about for future consoles.
Zelda definatly is the best game for the system as MGS4 will be for PS3 :D
I've played the Rayman game extensively and while the graphics may not be that high above the PS2, the game play is fun as hell.
Nintendo needs to fire out the next Mario Party game quick if they want to drive another nail into the PS3's coffin. Mario Kart is going to be insanely fun.
I want to play Call of Duty 3 though and see how that one goes. If the shooting levels of Rayman are any indication, it should be alot of fun.
Obviously people like RC who just want graphics and endless extra capabilities aren't going to be amused by the Wii, but then again these are the people that subscribe to Xbox Live and let their butts take root in the couch when playing.

PS2 and some consoles might have that very real look
Sometimes thats all that counts.. ;) hehe
And while the sound is only mediocre, we are not that used to hearing our "dream cars" bouncing off the rev limiter.. and there is nothing "nice" in a 9,000rpm V12 bouncing off the rev limiter.. ;)
The sounds we are all most familiar with are idle, and in-car at medium to high RPM levels.. not insane over rev levels.. which is where most video games put as you mash the gas like a mad speed demon.. not something you would do in real life too often :P ;) eheh

Why would I want Linux on the box?
We want it to be as simple to use as a toaster.. no even simpler.. imagine a toaster that you don't need to put bread in, to et toast out.. :P ;)
Well for the fact that you can have emulators and......well you see where this is going dont ya?
RF?????? I thought the PS3 controller was Bluetooth?
Uhm exactly how do you think the blue-teeth travel around the room?
Why its RF.. ;)
SO far all PS2 and PS1 titles I tried worked.. I dug up my old PC Logitech Momo FFB wheel, the one with the thick contoured rubber wheel and stick shift (only 200 degrees of rotaiton) but the good news is that its FFB motor is activated during really extreme turns.. so it actually works quite well with GTHD.
Did I already mention that the G25 works properly with GT4?
Today I removed the DVD player from the living room - Mr PS3 is going to do double duty from now on :)
Doh that is quite true. And here I am sitting here in this chair thinking it was something unique and had to do something with the color blue... :(
Hey since you removed your dvd player why not chunk out the computer while yer at it? Make your PS3 into an all in one. Install Linux damnit!!! I think thats gonna be the first thing I do when I get one maye during summer...hold that thought...GTHD first then Linux.
ZfrkS62 : I agree with you about that Mario Party thing. I just hope Sony gets their shit straight by Christmas 2007 or they will be fucked!
Downloading the video rite now RC thanks alot man! Looking at the Screenshot its a blue Ferrari. I saw a few pictures of a white Ferrari 599 in GTHD and it looked STUNNING! :D Also is there any difference in the exterior on the tuned 599?

Much appreciated for the video man thanks! :D
*EDIT*
I also agree with everyone the Sound if just fucking awful!!! Thats the main thing that I see which this DEMO lacks. :(
*EDIT #2*
Regarding sound I heard the reason why the GT games sounds are not as good as others such as Forza or GTR or any other racing sims is because PD just have a car in idle and then just rev it slowly or something...rather than the putting it on the dyno. Dont know if this is true but sounds like a good reason why....to me at least. :P

Well - while reading the f'ing manual this evening, it seems that Sony support you upgrading your own hard drive.
Right there in the book it explains how to do it.. :P
Takes any 2.5" SATA drive... ;)

Yet another reason to save the extra $100 and not go with the wireless 60GB PS3.. as if the "supported user hard drive upgrade" wasn't enough ;)
from the manual:
The wireless LAN transmission speed is slow (wireless LAN-equipped models only)
If a device such as a Bluetooth headset is registered with the PS3 system, it may slow down the transmission speed. In this case, go to "System Settings" > "Restore Default Settings" and cancel registrationof the Bluetooth device. If "Restore Defaukt Settings' is performed, all settings will be restored to their defalts and you will have to perform initial setup again to continue using the system.
Sounds like a shared receiver... so why bother? ;)

Sorry guys.. I had to do it.. I crossed over to the darkside.. I am a Sony FanBoy from top to bottom...
I had no choice but to team the PS3 up with a new Sony 60" SXRD 1080p Projection HDTV in order to do the PS3 justice.
And let me tell you... I cried... I literally broke down in tears after squealing like a love struck school girl when GTHD booted up in 1080i...
I need to wait till this evening when I get home with the HDMI cable to witness 1080p... I fear I will have to wear a diaper as I may actually pee on the floor like an excited puppy.
GTHD is that good in HD.
(sorry PGR3 FanBoys... even GT4 looks better than PGR3 when you show it in 1080i ;))

Nice buy man! Its been raved on AVS Forums that that lineup of Sony Tv is PRETTY DAMN GOOD! How much did you pay for it man?
Also to note that thing about PGR3 Vs. GT4
I saw like 2 screen shots of GT4 in 1080 and on a 42 in plasma and the car models looked aboustly fucking stunning! The environment was nice as well but you can tell some areas just sucked like on the Toyoko track the some of the buildings looked a bit odd. But the car models looked GREAT. Mind showing us a few pics??? :D
Also I wouldnt say GT4 in Hidef looks better than PGR but its pretty damn near it.

The whole setup was pure dumb luck.. the stand is bloody awesome and I could only of dreamed of buying one for the retail price of $400+.
As for the TV I would love everyone to think I had $4000 for the whole set (tv, stand and tax) just laying around - but I am not wealthy - just opportunistic ;) :P
It was a HUGE mark down of items after the College Bowl weekend.. (or what ever the hell this last sports weekend was...)
People buy shit then take it back after the game.. the stores loss is your gain - you can get things for 50% to 70% off on these return items.
They carry full warranty and are still brand new .. in fact, the same guys who delivered the TV the first time to the original purchaser on Dec 28th for the Texas Bowls on 29 and 30 December and 1 Jan, delivered it to me on on the 3rd.. :P hehe

We are thinking about a 65inch Mitishibushi (SP?) DLP for the living room and if I can convince my dad I saw a few cheap 42 inch, 1080p, hdmi outputting tv's for around 1500-1700 for my room. So gotta be very good for about one or two months since that will be about the time when the house will be done and about the time when we will purchase the TV's. :D *crosses fingers*

If you are a Microsoft Home Theatre PC kind of person, you probably are better off going with the 360 and all the Micro$haft addons... but if you are not going to be streaming your video from the PC via the XBox360 then its whether the PS3 games and Blu-Ray is of more use to you than the XBox360 games and HD-DVD.
For me, I was completely blown away by a demonstration of Blu-Ray on a 73" 1080p HD TV... and It left a bigger impression on my mind than the 1080i (upscaled to 1080p) HD-DVD demo.
Native and simple 1080p support from the player, system and Blu-Ray over the native 1080i and not so simple support from the player and system for HD-DVD is what won me over.
We did not have any type of HD tv until now, so we decided to go in at the top and future proof ourselves a little bit.

Looking good RC. BTW, I like your hardwood flooring.
Is there an InfraRed port anywhere ont he PS3? Seems like a major oversight on Sony's part. If you want the PS3 to be the main media portal for peoples home, it seems kind of dumb to render programmable remotes useless.
Bah, whatever.
Nice TV though, congrats! You've made me jealous and I'm considering picking up an HDTV now.Should I consider my Tax return spent? LOL

Ok we have a new TV king with the monster that RC45 has now, so I shall throw my hat into the ring with my new HD projector and a couple of other toys.
First we have an infocus 163" 720p HD projector zoomed (unzoomed I guess you could get to over a 300" screen easy...if you can find a big enough wall).
Its a lot less noisy than my last projector, a lot brighter, quicker start up and shut down times and no motion blur. Only bad point really is that it doesn't support 1080i/p....maybe next year...
I watched all six star wars movies in HD over xmas back to back from 5pm to 9am with a break for food etc, the first 3 were 1080i rips and were indeed breathtaking, a true "movie theatre experience" from this beast.
8/10
Second we have a modded xbox 360 connected to a media PC, this is a nice idea but it doesn't support many HD formats apart from WMV. You can "transcode" other formats such as Divx and Xvid on the PC with 3rd party software and stream them to the xbox, however with mixed and messy results. Games are of course excellent and "backup games" are free !
5/10 for media streaming and 7/10 for gaming.
Next we have a SnaZio SZ1350 High Definition Network DVD player, this is better than the Xbox for streaming media as it supports nearly all the HD formats and much more such as a built in upscaling DVD player for all your old disks. Sadly this device doesn't support the all important h.264 codec that all the decent HD movies are encoded in (which you can download for free )
http://www.pluggedin.tv/SnaZio-SZ1350-High-Definition-Network-DVD-player?sc=2&category=12

Lastly its the good old PC directly connected to the projector which plays everything, thanks to the good old karma I have already built a nice collection of over 50 HD movies which take up less than 900 GB and all available on tap without even opening a disc box up. The downside is that I need to run my conroe E6400 at 3 ghz plus to get 100% smooth video from 1080i movies such as the star wars prequels.

I hope to get a PS3 when they hit the UK as I am going with blu-ray as the discs are almost double the capacity of toshiba hd and are therefore more useful to me.
I hear TG might be shot in HD soon, if thats the case then I think I will upload the usual hi-res TG features first, followed by HD versions shortly after. Anybody that doubts HD hasn't seen it set up properly, as RC45 will probably confirm its a real bitch to get a good picture of and pictures never really do it justice, the blurry one at the end with the Xbox360 is just for scale !

Well some people give rear projection tv's and projectors a hard time, saying viewing angles and external light sources cause them to produce bad pictures. There is always one that mentions bulb life as well...well I have been using a projector for over two years, and am only half way though the bulbs life and guess what I have now upgraded the whole projector before the damn bulb has burned out !
Having owned both I can say IMO both are excellent and I also hope that we have kinda proved that hear.

Too small, I am not droping down in size by 60" even if its a brighter picture :P
I think we have clearly shown, peel away the hype and fanboy hysteria and research a little and use common sense and you can have eye-ball bleeding visual crack cocaine to get addicted to ;)

Freaking awesome set-up Jabba!
I would do with a regular 40in HD TV... but these set-up are plain crazy! :P :D
Yeh, I remember you saying about your star war marathon dani, and I knew I could only give it a try over xmas when I have a few days off work.
I must say even with 13 hours sleep prior to the start of it, I was still feeling tired and uncomfortable at the start of Jedi, so I didn't really enjoy it as much as I should, so it seems my max is 5 films in a row really.

DX10 and that game Alan Wake. Damn that shit looks soooo good!
Also watching all them films in one day is just crazy man! I think I would just fall asleep. I am loving that projector setup Jabba! My parents were thinking about something cheap around 1000 USD but my brother talked them out of a projector becuase the Tv is on at all times....even if someone isnt watching  and then bulb would be gone within a year or two.

Hey RC I know you dont wanna mess around with Linux but you should try the Debian Live Cd! It is a full Operating System on the CD.
It boots off the CD and doesnt install anything to the HDD. Should give it a try should be interesting. Also you saw my post about the running XP PRO on the PS3? :D
Damn I cant wait to get one hehe.

So you can be the coolest person with a PS3 on Jabbas World....oh wait I think you are the only person with a PS3 on Jabbas World. hehe The only reason why I would do it is to run emulators and if you do some downloading then download movies and then watch em straight from the PS3 to the TV rather than on a computer monitor. I just cant wait till I get it I will be like a damn mad scientist doing some crazy shit with it lol.
These issues are not launch "technology" issues, they are "legality" issues.. and SOny has chosen to not play along - the result is less funtional features than a PS1... ;)
I think in about a year or so, this problem will probably be fixed..
Still, the Wii is a great gaming system. Very fun, but definitely for younger audiences, or ppl who don't hold a grudge against "cute" characters
