View Full Version : Canada is a rip off

Everything u buy here will cost 2x the amount you could get in the states, and even if u do manage to find something in the US that they'll ship here, the import tax will kill any profit u think u may have made...

for instance I was going to order a sway bar from www.hyundaipartsonline.com where it would cost 69.15 US, compared to 180.57 CAD from a dealer here...but they don't ship to Canada...so I'l have to buy it for almost 3x the cost....

or I bought a plasma from the states...1600 compared to 3200 here...same tv, warranty and I got a free stand with it...

but I paid 600 import tax...

This country is based around ripping u off...lets face it US>Canada :(

Well, Vancouver is the best place in the world to live in:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4306936.stm

Canada overall is a better country to live in than the U.S.

For almost a decade (up to the year 2001), Canada was ranked number one among 175 countries in the United Nation's Quality of Life survey.

how is it in Canada if you lose your job?

You get unemployment, which is decent. Then you go on welfare, wich is also decent. They even provide you with government-subsidised housing, which in most cases is a pretty nice townhouse. You get plenty of clothes, food, etc. You can even afford to run a car. You know, it keeps you from living like a dog so you don't go around mugging people. Furthermore, you still get the free healthcare so if you're on welfare you're not fucked if you break a leg.

Imagine you have a business - a small company. You have lets say 10 people who are good at what they do but one of them do shit, is lazy, comes late, have production that have no value cause he's work is done badly. The answer - will you keep him in your company or you will kick his ass out and dont give a shit about him paying his mortgage and bills and stuff? Dont know how much you get involved in the working process yet MIHAI, people will not work on the max if they got simply ripped off of the money they have made with they own hard work, you just cannot be motivated if you know you are ripped thats where "ahh I give a shit why would I do more?" attitude is born. Last time I checked, it was slightly healthier than Czech Republic. I don't agree with communism, but I see the benefits of having some socialism. In the end, let the statistics talk. and you cannot base the whole of the USA on Detroit.... which is in Michigan, which is 50th out of 50 right now in terms of the state economy. Yet... Detroit isn't that bad. I've never been mugged in Detroit, Everso, who went to school near dowtown; but actually a worse location part of detroit, yet had never been mugged. I've had my car stolen; but that is what insurance is for.. I was not "car jacked" as I was not in the car.

I see you have no love of trying to better yourself.

clearly, it makes NO sence to buy something @ 3200$ when you are already paying 40% in tax right off the pay check before you get a chance to tax yourself locally through entertainment purchasses.

and to think that your health care system works LOL.... is that why there are so many Canadians who buy thier pharmacudicals in Michigan, and have doctors in Michigan? you might be surprised by those stats...

and... i'm 100% sure T O has much higher rate of being mugged then Detroit. you are simply racist, like David Duke.

The original definition od the word economics was "the art of how to run the house or a household", if you simply apply the socialistic methods in running your household it will collapse sooner or later. Time shows if it works or not.
Ofcourse its not only about paying lazy bitches when they dont work what economics stands on there are more things but only this is one of the major points just look at the Russia, it was one of the countries that had very high level of living one too then socialism came. it seems that some crime rates are dropping in urban areas, wheras; perhaps due to government subsidies; in the more rural areas, crime is on a dramatic rise! living in such areas, many cannot support themselves on such rediculous taxes, i assume; and the gov. doesn't "care" about them too, right? meh

also, it seems that violent crime is on a dramatic rise amoung youth in Canada... and moving away from fists, and towared knives and other weapons... what system does the gov. have for those kids?

from my understanding; there is becoming more and more organized crime in the immigrant families in cities like TO... in fact, comparable to NY, or Chicago even...

You have no understanding of the English language. WTF is capitolism? You just can't get it through your thick head that a car's handling is about how much fun you can have with the car. It's when the back starts to slide and you can keep that drift going without the car spinning. That's what handling is all about. It's about creating understeer and oversteer on demand, not going through a corner at 100 mph. It's what British sports cars are all about. Watch Top Gear more often and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

It's sad none of the Canadians on this board want to support their country.
I never said Canada is perfect. I just said it's a better place to live in than the United States. Economists seem to agree with me on this point.

which has nothing to do with the ablity and encouragement for personal responsibility, and individual success.

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standards of living for countries worldwide.

which has nothing to do with economics; just look at the life expectancy for your "answer" and anybody who is intellegent can see that clearly, a good, and happy life doesn't depend on how long you live.

in both the other catagories, we are equal, or US is vastly ahead of you... even with 300,000,000 people.... vs. your what... 20-30 million? or are you at 50? i dont know. You also dont have the southern border issue with illlegals finding thier way and staying here; often not enrolling in school. go figure, yet somehow, in annual income, we are wayyyyyyy above you.

so, economists DONT agree with you, and HDI actually ends up meaning nothing. go figure.

Standard of living: The Standard of living refers to the quality and quantity of goods and services available to people and the way these services and goods are distributed within a population. It is generally measured by standards such as income inequality, poverty rate, real (i.e. inflation adjusted) income per person. Other measures such as access and quality of health care, educational standards and social rights are often used too.

Holy shit! I guess that everything to do with what we're talking about over here. It reflects how "good" it is to live in a certain country. Statistics show it is better to live in Canada than in the United States. Until you can prove otherwise, or that changes, you can nibble on a penis.

He's gonna come after you and your employees and rob you so he can feed himself and his family. Remember, it's not that easy to move from one country to another and there will always be unemployed, unless you go to a communist model.

EDIT: I still can't believe there are no Canucks defending their homeland. Drop them hockey sticks and pick up this fight, fellas!

Standard of living: The Standard of living refers to the quality and quantity of goods and services available to people and the way these services and goods are distributed within a population. It is generally measured by standards such as income inequality, poverty rate, real (i.e. inflation adjusted) income per person. Other measures such as access and quality of health care, educational standards and social rights are often used too.

ok.
Your goods, and services are further taxed, which increases their cost, and out of pocket costs; no?
your average income level is also significantly lower; which leads to less economic freedom, and a lower standard of living, no?
your simply an economic n00b

LOL tell me about it :D

I personally dont care to throu him out if he is ruining my company, IF he wants to do better work and fix all the crap after his lousy work than I can give him a chance, that would be his motivation. But I am not paying from my money him sitting at home that I would pay too, feeding his children who will look at him as an example(thats what children do - copy a parent) and will be same lazy bitches just like he is. If I will agree with that socialistic way then I peronally basically encorage him to do nothing. Do I help him by this - no, I am helping to destroy his life cause he is loosing his ability's to handle his own life.

You are simply a moron who can't read. Read over the whole definition of Standard of Living and tell me where its sole determinant factor is the amount of goods and services you can buy with the dough you earn. Before you take me on and call me an economic noob, you should consider taking economics 101 and not sleeping through it. I'm not only saying you shouldn't sleep through it because your wallet might get stolen. You might actually learn something.

Did I mention they provide us all with free healthcare?

Werent you just complaining about that in another topic? That your back was screwed up and you had to wait four months to see a doctor?

Shhh! Don't mention that! It might ruin my stance. It's actually to see a specialist, not a general physicial. I went for a check-up yesterday with no appointment and had to wait only 10 minutes. I'm going to physio now.

economics is not an opinion, it is proven time and time again, and each time, you are wrong. Why don't you transfer to UC, and try to pass our classes while also maintaining your infirior stance.

Yes, I had almost forgotten about your flawed health care system. It is severely flawed.

so you are more concerned about presentation than content it would seem which in and of itself would indicate your argument and position is backed by little fact and even less reality and all you are trying to do is appear as loud as possible and hope that if enough insults are hurled then your point of view will survive intact simply because others give up bt sorry to dissapoint you we are nto going away and are in fact correct

You get unemployment, which is decent

We've got that too.

Then you go on welfare, wich is also decent

We have welfare as well.

They even provide you with government-subsidised housing, which in most cases is a pretty nice townhouse

We have that too. Low income housing, usually apartments or townhomes and sometimes even an average family house. They are not always in shitty neighborhoods like most would think either.

You get plenty of clothes, food, etc.

Same here. Goodwill stores and the Salvation Army will provide cheap (sometimes free) clothing and furniture. Food shelters will provide groceries to anyone without question. I dont' know what the programs are called in other states, but it Minnesota we have EBT and WIC. Both of which come from the state. Basically a credit card from the state to buy groceries. This is of course, free to low income families.
The EBT card comes with a cash account well, to buy other needed items.

You can even afford to run a car

Same here. Low income familes can even get them cheap thanks to all the auto charities.

You know, it keeps you from living like a dog so you don't go around mugging people

Yup, that what it's supposed to do. But it doesn't always work. Believe it or not, but that majority of people here are honest, hard working people. But with 300 million people in this country, there are going to be a few douchebags among them.

Furthermore, you still get the free healthcare so if you're on welfare you're not fucked if you break a leg.

We have state provided healthcare and Dentalcare as well. It's called Minnesota Care here, not sure about other states. You don't have to be poor to get it either. Anyone can get it if their workplace doesn't provide it. We'll just ignore the fact that a hospital connot turn a patient away.

All that and our taxes don't come close to 40%.

Also, I've never been stabbed, mugged, shot , assaulted, touched inappropriately, raped, car jacked, or any other bullshit you seem to think every American experieces on a daily basis.

Can yo get around it by sending your canadian rubles to somone here, have them buy it and send it to you as a gift? Or do gifts still get taxed?

4 pages already! What the hell?

Some places are more expensive than others. It's a fact of life. Demand and supply...?

On a side note, Australian authors' bestselling books are actually cheaper in the US than here.

i'd still have to pay for sales tax 8% and most likely brokerage fees...

unless i drove across the border and then came back with it (i think u can bring over $500 worth of stuff with out getting taxed, as was the case with my surround sound)...but i don't know anyone in Buffalo... :|

MaX Power- I feel you dude, stuff is generally more expensive here in Canada then it is in the US. I dont have an answer as to why that is, but I guess we will have to learn to accept it. Tho there is the choice to just go to the states, buy your goods and bring em back.... pay the sales tax you are still ahead. Dodge the fuckers at the border and say "nothing to declare sir" and ur as good as gold. either way you should come out ahead. pain in the ass? yes. want a swar bar for 2/3 the Canadian price? gotta be done.

MIHAI- man i dunno if i can stand up for you cause u seem to have dug urself pretty deep this time. I understand some of the things you say tho. I think free health care that covers many things for all canadians is a good thing. I am sure this has something to do with our tax rate being so high but who knows. As far as tax rates are concerned, at minimum wage, its less than 10% so your 40% goes out the window.. thats reserved for the six figure club. Quality of life in Canada vs. the US.... tough to say the population difference can be deceiving. Of course there is more poverty in the US because there is 10 times the amount of people. btw, I think you live just outside of London, On... correct? I spent three years in that city and its a pretty nice place to live, so its tough to get a good feel for what a bad area is. I mean the east side has its pockets but generally its a pretty affluent city. Also if you ever head to Toronto, skip the young and bloor shoppin trip and head to jane and finch, go check out how quickly someone is willing to FUCK YOU up for 5 dollars. nuff said bro.

Yeah, I guess you're right, Callen. Every time I worked the taxes were 5% or so because I'm a student. I know my mom pays 40% tax.
