This is interesting for everybody that wants to kown why diesel powered cars are getting to become really fast and may be faster than gasoline powered cars in the future.

While diesels are definitly more efficient then gasoline engines since the primary meter of performance is fuel not air as in a gasoline engine, I would take what the article says with a grain of salt. First off, in most cases a diesel engine will have difficulty matching the performance of a gas engine per weight. Why? They need stronger materials to run since they go at higher compression, thus more weight. Second off, they pollute more sulfur and nitrogen then gasoline engines. Sooner or later they will be targeted by the environmental lobbies.
At the end of the day I wouldnt bet the farm on diesels. While the Audi lemans car is impressive some of me wonders if its an example of a car so dominating it could win with almost any engine. I'd sit back and wait to see if disels take over in racing before Id speculate if theyd replace sports cars only because historically the one has to happen first.

You can run diesel cars on vegetable oil and than the harm the earth.
And deliver the same performance as on normal diesel fuel.
I think that diesel powered cars will take over endurance racing.
Here is link about diesel cars that converted to run on vegatable oil.
And their are some tuned street legal diesel pick up trucks that have made over 800 whp some even 945 whp.

The problem of some poluttnants stays. And try running a new diesel on an vegetable oil (or used cooking oil or anything other than proper diesel fuel) ... Expensive rebuilds soon.
Dont judge what diesel engines can digest by old technology diesels ...
Plus: tah article is deeply misleading. For instance it says:

No, only turbocharged diesels can do that. Vut they have to be /technologically speaking) compared to turbocharged gasoline engiojnes? Anyone tried the 1.4 170hp TSI engine by VW? Fun to drive, no clattering, cleaner exhaust than a 170 HP diesel (which is 2.0 TDI, not 1.4 TDI) - and the diffrerece in conskumption (tested in a Glof) is 1, maybe 1.5 litres per 100 km (diesel uses less), which is (considering everything elese) almost nothing (and in countries with normal prices of fule is partly offset by higher cost of diesel).
So diesel yes, but only for specific purposes ...

uhhh.. no.. Not quite.
Your working under 2 assumptions that don't hold.
The first is that using vegetable oil will be energy efficient. That is you won't be required to use more oil to produce the vegetable oil. If you are you have to burn more of it. This increase in production will pull more co2 out of the ground. Only under the assumption that you can maintain the number of plants to suck the co2 back in will it be net sum 0 for co2. The math shows that it will not be a zero sum equation between the excess production and excess absorption.
Furthermore, none of that holds for nitrates or sulfur. Why? By burning the plant oil you release more nitrate and sulfur into the atmosphere then would otherwise by decomposition and consumption. Remember, sulfur/nitrogen are not harmful in certain forms. They are harmful in air and in ground water respectively. Your releasing more into these mediums with the vegetable oil. You are trading supposed(we wont get into the gw arguement) global pollution for local pollution.

I would be fun to enter a diesel racetruck on a trackday and scare all the other cars and overtake them all.

Yeah I remember that Foden racing truck in JCs No Limits, that was fast :shock:
But of course have to delete the speed limiter because they are limited to 100 mph so you can overtake them everywhere even on the straight.

Several years ago i like to watch truck racing when they had some real horsepower and torque and the daf trucks where very strong in truck racing.

Speaking of trucks , my cousin is a truck driver for a big Company in Europe, and has a MAN TGA XXL of 700 HP, one hell of a truck, drives easyer than a car, believe it or not, but the top speed is of 128 kph, fuel consumption of 37 liters fully loaded (legal), but it can handle over 70 tons of load :D
and MAN won the last 4-5 years of truck racing, and are the trucks and buses of the year and have developped some amazing engines over the years, first ones with EURO 4 Engines in the World! :)

You can even tune trucks.
I would love to drive 200 km/h+ truck that has the handling and braking power of a supercar.
And would strip of as much weight as possible.
Fully tuned engine of course 1400+ hp and torque figure of 5000 newton meter+
And than i would use it on trackdays and normal road maby some street racing.

I believe you! My neighbour drives a Scania V8 that is also used for special loads, so many HP and the Torgue is :shock:
His is also easy to drive since the dolly is directed by a computer :D
The reason racing trucks are limited to 100 MPH is because if they went any faster the barriers of the tracks couldn't hold them if they spin off, this is really true! :P

Antonio Albacete - the current European Truck Champion - drove his truck at Jarama de-restricted... and reached something like 200kmh at the end of the straight - but no one thought about the brakes... obviously, they're not prepared to stop a 5-tons monster doing 200kmh... so he end up behind the barriers :P

Answering the question why the diesel cars are so damm fast currently, my thoughts are very clear
Fistly because of the direct injection diesel system invention; although it was discovered many years ago, always it has offered very excellent thermodinamyc properties (therefore thats why it offers very good performances and low fuel consumption), it wasnt very usable every day in cars due to its noise and vibration; however, due to the manufacturers investment alongside the new materials discovery, the direct injection alongside the turbo is useful for every segment; from little cars to luxurious ones, and the invention wont be improved for many years now
On the other hand, in the racing area, the diesel engines are so powerful and efficient, mostly due to the investment (specially the VAG group) in races as it did on the quattro four wheel drive system about 25 years ago

I believe some the dakar rallytrucks are capable to reach 200 km/h whit no speed limiter.
Can you develop a braking system that can slow a racing truck down from 200 km/h+??
