ames May, the other bloke off Top Gear and co-host of this year’s MPH ‘06 live motoring theatre, was last night said to be “severely hacked off” in his local pub after sustaining a suspected fractured wrist in a high-speed supermarket trolley crash.
May, 43, was performing a live stunt for the MPH extravaganza, billed as “human 10-pin bowling”. In this, he attempted to guide a modified shopping trolley, fitted with rudimentary steering, into 10 giant rubber skittles on the opposite side of the stage after being propelled by his co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson, driving a low-powered G-Wiz electric city car.
However, in what the show’s script described as a “humorous twist”, and supposedly unbeknown to May, the G-Wiz was replaced at the last moment with a 480bhp Ford Shelby Mustang. Members of the audience, many of whom filmed the tragedy on mobile phone cameras, have reported that the trolley reached a speed of “almost 20mph” before it struck the skittles and toppled sideways in a rather pathetic way.
Its not that big of a deal breaking a wrist, but this is going to make it even harder for us to keep our Top Gear alive.

Whilst he may have sustained some injury, they do the show 3 times a day for 3 days, that's 9 shows, exactly the same thing happening each time.
That video was from one that I wasn't at as the trolley did tip over whilst I was there, James just got up and pretended to be annoyed and then carried on as normal!
The very fact that it says 'in his local pub' suggests to me somebody is reporting about nothing here! :roll:

What is there to explain RC45, MPH'06 is an automotive event for 3 days that included a show in it which they performed 3 times a day.
Well - then how can he be "surprised" by a "last minute" switch - if it happened 9 times :P ;)

True true, I guess the show was the same, but they only showed that thing in the last show I guess, otherwise I agree that it would be quite stupid :?
yeah - and a broken wrist can turn out to be a career ending injury for aome people.
Its not quite as trivial as some make it out to be.

It happened at every one of the shows, trust me, it was a completely scripted event. (Excluding any injury of course!)
The last minute switch was a scripted 'last minute switch' it's not that hard to understand, it'd for audience entertainment.
James is fully aware they will change the car but the audience is made to think he isn't. Therefore there's a big cheer, everyone laughs, James looks surprised and slightly annoyed and they carry on with the show!

...and its this kind of stupid slap-stick that was once charming but is now a little stupid and kinda makes me not really enjoy the 3 stooge o auto-telly;)

Yeh it was so obviously scripted, I think it worked to an extent bearing in mind some of the people at the show were kids and others may not know of the usual TG antics. But if it had been on TV I don't think it would have worked.
Hopefully TG will retain the humour and things that make it different but not lower itself to the cheap knock-off levels of Fifth Gear and the like.

mmmmm, the show was so obviously scripted and not really very funny all the wayback when i went to MPH 03!! That would be why that was the last time i went to it...
Still a broken wrist is nasty, but the degrees to which a wrist can be broken and cause him long term trouble are fairly large! He could be lucky, he could need an opperation to pin it back together (as a friend of mine required).

I watched all the clips of MPH '06 on google, and I agree with everyone here. It does seem like it is way too scripted. The car stunts and stuff were cool, but it all seemed a bit too artsy and such.
And the stunt was planed. It said somewhere on the internet that the script contained an "ironic twist" as Jeremy pulled out in the Mustang.

Somewhere some nanny state individual is grinding their teeth. We all know it was scripted, but sadly I see them doing anything they can to strike it down.
Hehe, hilarious if i knew they did things like that at MPH06 i would have gone :(
