View Full Version : Bought a new laptop (HP Pavilion Media Center)
Finally did it and time to get rid of the old HP that was messing up my evenings with its fucking slowlyness!!!
I went to the store with the firm idea to spend XXXX and obviously ended up spending 50% more
Dual Core, 2 GHz
2x 1024 DDR RAM
2x 100 GB
Big ass 17" TFT monitor with 1440x900 res
...
Crappy pic I took last night right out of the box (with the old one to the left)

It's so cool to have again a "new" laptop and not an old crap that only asks you to stab it with a knife every other minute!

That's what I call an upgrade!
dual 1024 ddr gonna do the trick :D and that 17" is quite good too..
I'm in the mood of a laptop too, replace my big stationary computer. So, are laptops any good at all or are they just small and good to carry?
Congrats TT!
Great laptop,
had a similar one myself, (not a dual core) but decided later to upgrade to a desktop.

Well, even the best laptop can always be topped quite easily by desktops. You can also have gigger screens and so on.
I would have bough a dekstop actually, which would have been more powerfull for the same money, but for my job, even if I have a laptop for work too, it's just better to be sure I an carry all my stuff around. And with wireless at home, it's just cool to sit down on the sofa and use it :D
If you don't need to carry it around, a desktop will always be a better solution IMO
Oh, and BTW, this one is not really "small and easy to carry" :D

Thats for sure!!
It's like a Tank of laptops :P
@TT, working for Lenovo I'm of course interested why didn't you go for one
of our machines out of the Thinkpad fleet ;-)

Good stuff TT, my girlfriend has one that she just picked up as well, only difference was that it is a Core 2 Duo. But one thing I noticed about her HP was that it is noisey as hell. The fan is always spools up and spools back down. But you got 2x 100GB HDs? She only got the 120GB version.

I used to like the Thinkpads a lot when IBM made them :). Seriously though, ever since Lenovo took over, there is definitely a noticable drop in quality.
@ae86_16v, Thinkpads are still produced at the same factories, with the same
ppl and the same supplier of goods, there is no - absolutely no difference
pre or post the IBM era. don't forget, TP's are produced in China since
15 years and btw. 95 % of all notebooks (no matter if Dell, HP, Toshiba etc.)
are produced in china.
cheers

Mine is a Core 2 Duo too.. Centrino Duo whatever.. should be the same, no?
And yes, I have two 100 GB drives in this one. The fan isn't too bad so far here. Old one was constantly blowing like a 2 cents whore!

Don't take it bad, but not only I didn't see a big enough screen in the Lenovo offer, but I also think the ones I saw where pretty ugly to see, so I never really considered them. Also, first time I saw the "Lenovo" brand I wondered "WTF?? Never heard this, must be some Korean Scam" j/k :P

Definitely. I am not saying that goods produced in China aren't good, but certain companies have better quality control that are produced at better plants. Or in certain cases same plants but different quality controls.
Maybe the few I saw and used were bad examples. But I have never experience a bad IBM era Thinkpad, but the two Lenovos I have seen wasn't up to par set in the by-gone era.
By the way, both my MacBook and MacBook Pro were produced in China and are very high quality :).

congrats on the new PC ;) Always nice to have a fresh PC to work with..
Does it have the "quick play" feature that lets you watch videos and play music with out booting up? I saw commercials and ads for that but not sure exactly how that works.

TT, I am gonna jump in here. Dutch, my girlfriend has the same laptop, yeah the Quick Play is kinda cool. Right now when her computer is on, she uses Media Center to watch DVD, but that is correct, you could use "Quick Play" w/o booting up. Although, it is not instantaneous, it still takes a few seconds to "boot up". Nevertheless, it is a cool feature.

Your processor is a pentium 4 ,probably a prescott ( aka pressHOT ) , those run at incredible high temperatures so you need a noisy or a huge fan .
TTīs one is a Core Duo ( Yohan ) or Core 2 Duo ( Merom ) , based in the old pentium 3 , those processors can outperform a pentium 4 with a lot less GHZ , lets say a P4 3.2ghz = Core Duo 1.5ghz , so they run a lot cooler and you need a less noisy fan .

wish they'd told me that when I bought it. My old one was an 1,8ghz IBM with a centrino processor, and it never, ever made a sound. I could have it on at night in my bedroom, downloading through the night,.... but not this one... sounds like it is about to fly off my table at times.
