hey guys quick question i have a firewire port on my laptop, and i was wondering if it is possible to connect my laptop to my schools desktops (both apples) and not have any problems? i would mainly use this for dropping larger files from my computer to theirs so i can turn things in by putting it on our schools servers. and also grabbing files teachers hand out to us by putting them on the server. now i don't want to have access to the server from my laptop but i just want to be able to drag and drop stuff off the schools computer to my computer.

(i.e. ~ teacher puts some files on the server, i get on the server with the schools computer put all the files i need on the desktop. then hook my computer to the schools computer and drag and drop all files i need. then when i am done/turn something in be able to drag and drop the files back on to the schools computers desktop)

is that possible?

yeah but thats like 80 bucks RC and i was talking to my friend (network something guy) and he said to just get a crossover ethernet cable. its more universal then a firewire and can handle faster speeds.

If both Apple have firewire ports, you could use the Target Disk model in OS X. All you have to do is hold down T on your laptop and it should show up as an external drive.

OS X 10.3 or newer's IP over Firewire

Vista drops IP over Firewire support

TNT you should watch out for bad IEEE1394 cables as they tend to slow down the connection. I use IP over FireWire to transfer vids from my XP Pro SP2 box to my Mac.

The instruction's similar. You just need both Macs to see each other & auto DHCP for the FireWire port. once that's done both computers should be able to see each other and you can connect. if that doesnt work you have to type in the IP of the computer you want to connect too.
