GT2, the fastest track car money can buy.
And the winner is.... the "road challenge". Especially with those painted stripes:

SL55 AMG. A car you can actually use for the real world. You don't have to get into another sports car on the way home from the office to do 0-100mph in 10 seconds!

Gallardo and the Gt2. Ferrari is way overrated. They just dynoed one, and it makes no more power than a stock 360, and its weight is heavier than quoted.
gt2 if its for everyday driving with the sl a close second. 360cs as a second car and the lambo for a 3rd.

Love the Challenge Stradale, but just looking at that Gallardo that you have on there has sealed the deal. The more that I look at that car, the more I like. Plus; if I had to drive it everyday, the AWD would help immensely when driving in the rain.

Probably the Ferrari, although I don't really like the noise the sports exhaust makes. Could always trade it in for a vanilla 360 and about $60k in change . Dark horse choice would be the GT2; the SL55 is too much of a luxo cruiser and the Gallardo is a bit too ostentatious for my tastes (although......... the performance is a hard thing to give up).
man this is a tough one, after thinkin im down to the porsche GT2 and the 360 CS.......................ok its the 360CS for me,the porsche is fast, but also the 360 isnt far behind it,but the ferrari has that noise, the wonderful V8 band,so it has to win :D

SL55 AMG.....not only because I love it but the fact it pushes out the same numbers as the 575 Maranello for a 100k less. If the GT2 looked like this though I would definitely buy it in a heartbeat......

Yo thats a really hard choice.
Hmmmmmm..........well the SL55 would defintely be the most user friendly.
Gallardo goes around corners like an F1 car, and the 360 Stradale is temptingly good.
Gosh this is hard...........
Ok, I'll slash out the SL55 cos its only got an auto box. Gallardo's out cos its so hard to have some sideways fun in it.
360 Stradal's suspension is too hard which means its not as good for drifting.
I love 6 cyclinder engines so I will vote for the Porsche GT2 :)

well i made this decision in real life and picked the GT2. With the upgrades to 600hp ($7500 total) i can truly say this thing is a monster. It is by far the best car i have ever driven and i have driven just about everything. I don't know why they never include this car in the comparisons because i am pretty sure it would absolutely smoke anything short of the true supercars. And, at the end of the day you have a car that you can drive home and take to work the next day without thinking about it.
On the track it is simply a pleasure to drive. Oversteer is easy to enduce at any time but also easy to bring back into check. I have not had much problem with the snap oversteer that many have complained about, maybe that is because i have adjusted the suspension and alignment a bit.

I'd choose the Gallardo, unless this question is about a car that you only drive on trackdays or sunny sundays. In that case my choice would be the 360CS.
I have very little emotion with Porsches so, although the GT2 is an excellent car, I'd never choose the GT2. The SL55 AMG doesn't stand a chance in this company.

The Gallardo is the greatest car for the money hands down. AWD with rear bias, limited slip, a gorgeous exterior, unbelievable quality (for an Italian brand), and reliable electronics (thanks to Audi), and the best paint on a car in the business make it hot hot hot...
Ivanhoe
01-06-2004, 10:05 PM
greatest car for the money!!! i dont think soo.... i would love to say porsche but not even them have the best bang for the buck. example, clio v6. but even the gt3 has better performance for money. best paint? i never paid attention to that really haha. but i think the paint quality is the same for just about all cars (in that class/price range). its no longer an italian brand as it is owned by audi. the interior isnt that nice either... rather plain actually.

hmmmporsche 4 me cos its the fastest i think, and although i LOVE the looks of the gallardo, its got 4WD, yes its more practical but damn this is a €200k sportscar, u dont buy that for practical reasons! and for the ferrari, its pretty, RWD, NA engine, but still it doesnt do it for me, dunno why. for some reason i like the spoilers and stuff of the porsche, although i usually h8 that kinda stuff.
and porsche is the best brand in the world IMO(together wit mclaren)

It still isn't a German car maker.
Did the Germans made the engine or is the technology from them? The factory is in Italy and the investors are German and the cars are made by Italian engineers/employees.

have you seen the interior of the Gallardo? I sat in one the other day. It is as far from exotic as could possibly be. It's not even as exotic inside as some $40k cars. If all you're looking for is exotic-ness for 200k i don't know that any of these are the right pick.

Actually Mercedes' parent company Daihmler(Benz) bought out Chrysler (they got rid of alot of the executives from Chrysler in the merger) So you could actually call Chrysler a German company at the rate these people are going.
Also I don't think that the SL55 AMG belongs in a comparison with the GT2, Gallardo, and the Challenge Stradale, the Ferrari should be the normal 360 if any.

Yeh the Ferrari is the loudest and fastest etc etc, but it is far from the best Ferrari, and not the best in this group either. Its got to be the Sl55 AMG, it can keep up with the porsche and ferrari, and its a comfortable grand tourer, which looks just as good with the top up!! And its got enough "real-world" torque to use it everyday!

depends what you mean by "keep up". We have an SL55 and a GT2 and have tracked both. On the track the GT2 is worlds faster. The SL55 weighs as much as a fullsize truck. Another problem is that because of the weight, the car can't use any good track tires. On the street the SL55 can only beat a stock GT2 above 120mph and with our extra horsepower in the GT2 (600) the Benz can't ever come close.

Sorry but all of the cars mentioned are in completly different classes...
360CS- Is a track special Road/Race car.
Galardo- Is a sports car.
911 GT2- Well a sports car also, but much faster.
Sl 55- Is a big grand tourer.

Well than your GT2 isnt stock evidently. Let me get a SL 55K (Kleeman) pushing out +600bhp and it will be a helluva alot closer. For comparison a modified 911 Ruf Turbo is pushing 550bhp at 5800rpms....so you have done alot of work to your GT2. Lets also not forget that a stock SL 55 AMG runs the same numbers as a 575 Maranello......

The Lambo Gallardo
Silvia_Drift
03-01-2004, 08:06 PM
Well, the GT2 is the fastest around the track and in a straight line but not as rewarding and fun to drive as the 360CS. The downside to the 360CS is the paddle shifters; why can't a regular 6 speed be an option or something? The Gallardo's AWD makes it understeer too much and has no Lamborghini personality left in it since Audi bought Lambo. The SL55 is probably the most comforable and it is very quick in a straight line but it can't keep up with the other cars in the corners since it handles like what it is; a big heavy Grand Tourer. It also only has an Auto if I'm not mistaken which is a huge downer. So, overall, I will go with the Ferrari since I am looking for driver involvment and enjoyment.

Gallardo no doubt. 4wd, V-10, its a 360CS beater, listen to Jeremy's advice! the CS is second for its delightful noise, performance and so on and so forth. I think GT2s are a waste, and would take a GT3 instead because they are quicker (no, not faster, but quicker---big difference) and the Merc is too big and heavy.

Probably the GT2 is the winner for me but with a small margin,as far as looks are concerned the ferrari is the winner and it is probably going to make your heart beat faster than any other car in this group. If i wanted to have something more exclusive i would take the gallardo, the mercedes is a great car but it is not that sporty when compared with the other cars. Oooooo i dont think that i can decide, while writing this message i was changing my mind on which one i would choose for me,all of them are just great

It's really close for be, between the GT2 and the 360...but let's just say i had an everyday driver (sayyy...a new M5?) then I'd certainly go with the 360. If it were to be my one and only car, then I might go with the GT2 (cuz i could upgrade it without being a blasphemer )
so basically, if someone put a gun to my head and said to pick ONE, then I'd go for the 360 Challenge Stradale.

360 Stradale has the noise and looks

How did you get these numbers? Isn't the ring sort of a bad track to take measure with because its such a high speed course? How about unleashing the Ford GT and spanking all three of them?--or maybe not because once again, the Ring is more about speed at this level since they all handle amazingly.

These times are from "SportAuto" magazin. Horst von Saurma drives all cars in the supertests.
Hockenheim is not a high speed track (highest speed of gallardo was 201 km/h at start/finish straight.
another interesting fact.
Supertest in Hockenheim:
- Stradale: air temperature 19°C
tarmac 17°C
- Gallardo: air temp. 7°C

Nurburgring = fast cars
Hockenheim = for cars with good handling, speed isnt very important on this track.

Gallardo
I'de take the stradale. It's a tough choice between the gallardo, GT2 and the Ferrari. The merc really doesn't belong in this class. It is fast in a straight line but throw it on a track with the other three and it would get killed! For me the ferrari is the most complete car( the sound  , the looks the power). But it would be a very close second between the gallardo and the GT2

It is fast in a straight line but throw it on a track with the other three and it would get killed! For me the ferrari is the most complete car( the sound  , the looks the power). But it would be a very close second between the gallardo and the GT2

Gallardo! Seriously, you can use it every day, it's beautiful inside and out and makes a wonderful sound - and it'll still run with a 911tt on any road even in the rain. And running 7.50 at the Ring, it's among the very fastest cars at any cost at tracks too!
...and it's a Lambo for gods sake! :D

Putting aside all things "practical" such as "real world" usability, and insurance, I think I'd have to go with the Ferrari because the Gallardo is a "baby" Lambo and I'd rather have the big dog, the Benzo is nice, but it's not a driver's car...but between the Porsche and the Ferrari, it's a hard one. I'd go ultimately with the Ferrari because of the musical motor and slightly more exclusive marque - the chicks will see the 911 as a regular 911 with a fixed wing. All chicks will give the Ferrari extra love no matter what company you're in, no matter what.

it's a hard one between stradale, gt2 and gallardo.
track: stradale, everyday car: gt2, weekend car: gallardo. grocery run: benz. of course if you can afford one of these babies, you most likely can afford all 4 :D if i can barely afford only one of these, i seriously wouldn't own any of them 'cause i'd be worried everytime i take the car out, and that's not fun

Gallardo wins hands down. Sure in a straight line they are pretty much equal, except the sl 55 may lag a bit. But throw those cars around a bend and the AWD of the gallardo just takes over.

Gallardo wins for me too the GT2 would be a close second but i really love the styling and the 500hp. i am pretty sure it smokes the ferrari CS. maybe my opinion will change when the new 360 comes out or should i say the 420??? i hear rumors of a new 4.2 liter v8 and revised styling. cant wait to see it. but for now the lambo wins out.

SL is too much seen as an old mans car and AUTO..? no way in a sports car.
911 - well, i see a bunch of porsches every day on the way to work so for me (even a super rare car like the GT2) its not got that supercar 'presence' that is really necessary at this level. Shame because its the very thing that porsche does well (making reliable usable cars) ends up counting against it.
For me its a 360 CS or Gallardo. I don't like paddles, so it would prob have to be a manual gallardo.
Ford GT would also be a contender IMO - 500 bhp v8 etc.. shame it is not built in bigger number and also only LHD.
Gallardo will probably be the replacement for my esprit in a few years time when prices are a bit more reasonable, or manual 360 with carbon seats, BBS CH wheels and sticky tyres + tubi. :P why pay silly prices for them to take out all the goodies :)

I would have to say the GT2. The cs is a great car but I would rather own a regular 6 speed than a f1 style. The GT2 would be the most fun for me because its almost like a race cause its 6 speed and rwd, i know the other ones have it but Porsche is known for their great engines. And who could go wrong with a flat 6 tt capable of 196 mph.

Must be the Ferrari !! Screaming engine :)
The gallardo made by audi :S and 4x4

Well, I haven't driven the Porsche; but I have driven the other two. I ended up buying the gallardo! Its faster, more a daily driver, and its looks are great. I love the 360 look and power, but the gallardo was just too much. The Porsche is great I'm sure; however, as an exotix, it just doesn't match up. Gallardo hands down!

The 360 Challenge stradale all day long!!! 8) My best mate (i wonder why  ) first bought an sl55 and has now got delivery of his new gallardo. Neither impressed me that much for certain reasons. The gallardo sounds like a motorbike, and also has a lot of burning smells consistently. The sl55 is a fine car if your about 2 retire on your pension. The porsche is a poor mans ferrari, in which case the F360 CS is the modern day F40 :D with a natural aspirated engine, but still a poor mans Enzo  !!
I live literally down the road from a local Maranello Ferrari Dealership  , so naturally i hear and see all sorts of ferrari's hurtling up and down the road, nothing compares to a Ferrari F50 v12 NA engine screaming down the road!!!!! :D
PS. Gallardo is just a overblown Audi!!

Are you sure about that? A CGT is harldy 'poor'. A 996 Turbo, is not exactly cheap wither, or a GT2, or a GT3 for that matter. In fact, Porsche and poor, don't really go together IMO.
Fair enough if you don;t like Porsche, but they are not a poor man's Ferrari!

I'll partially agree with you there. Firstly, Porsche is second fiddle to Ferrari when it comes to prestige, motor sport, well in fact quite a lot. Secondly, Porsche rely on turbos to produce maximum power from an engine where as ferrari create the most meatiest engines bhp per litre by means of just natural aspiration. A true sports car manufacturer!! The top of the range porsche only compares to a low down stock F360 which in my case just shows my point.
Its not that i don't like Porsche, but if your going to buy a sports car like that you might as well buy a true sports car like a ferrari!!

A GT3 surely compares with a 360CS? I take your points, I am a huge fan of Ferrari, I just think that if you buy a Porsche you are looking for a different thing in a car that someone who purchases a Ferrari.
In terms of HP, it is not all down to bhp figures, Ferrari certainly have an edge, but Porsche are not exactly underpowered:
GT3: 3600cc, 375bhp, 272bhp/ton
360 CS:3586cc, 420bhp, 333bhp/ton
CGT: 5733cc, 604bhp,445bhp/ton
Enzo: 5998cc, 650bhp,484bhp/ton
but on a torque front, they are more evenly matched:
GT3: 284lb/ft
306CS: 275lb/ft
CGT: 435lb/ft
Enzo: 485lb/ft
bmwfreak
04-11-2004, 09:53 PM
POrsche and Ferrari are manufacturers in their own right, with neither of them playing second fiddle to anyone, or each other. For what its worth, I;d take the 360CS (David Vivian in Autocar UK said the M3 CSL actually meant M3 "Challenge Stradale Lite"). :)

Gallardo and the Gt2. Ferrari is way overrated. They just dynoed one, and it makes no more power than a stock 360, and its weight is heavier than quoted.
hmm, do you have any proof of this source, or is this just speaking out of your bum?
its a tough decision for me between the GT2 and the 360 CS... these two are also much closer in price to eachother then the lambo contender.
after a grueling decision... i will opt for the GT2 because of its gearbox (its a stick... faster shifts, and im in more control which is important anyway)

There is no way on earth a stick is faster than ferraris latest f1 paddle shift or for that matter lambos e-gear. On top of the quick change, u don't even have to lift off the accelerator.
Control wise, u have full control over the f1 style gears, just takes a little getting used 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes there is a way, unless the shift gate is broken, or the gearbox has SERIOUS mechanical issues. in the hands of average, advanced, or professional drivers, proper manuels are faster shifts.
the only place i know where this isnt true is F1, and rally electro-hydrolic sequential gearboxes, where they depend on immediate shifts, and such a low amount of engine mass requires the rotational mass to slow over less time, versus road cars in which this isnt as strong a catagory. where F1 shifts are the best in road cars is Down shifts for the same reason... engine power to increase the engine revs is much quicker then idle throttle through computer controls to drop the revs.
have you ever head of power shifting? you simply cannot do this in a sequential gearbox.
since the downshifts are better, and essentially guarenteed, they say the sequential box is better for a track.

Sreriously though, do you think that a mili second here or there is going to make a difference to the average driver? For me one of the most evocative aspects of a Ferrari is the manual box. There is nothing like it, in any other car, period. The clunk-click-clunk as you change gear is part of driving a Ferrari. I think that getting a Ferrari with an F1 style gear box is almost a sin. There was some footage of a bloke on the gumball rally who was boasting about how quick the gear change was, just a shame that he could not drive to match.

I like the gallardo and it has a good engine but not so good as the stradale
The 911 GT2 seems to be good but I don't like the car very much.
I think the Mercedes is not a really sports car. It's a fast car but not so good as the others....
Finally:
1st - Stradale
2nd - Gallardo
3rd - 911 GT2
4th - Mercedes
Porsche - there is no substitute

i see that some people here want just to be fast and dont mention how that can be achieved.how the hell can a sl55 amg be enjoyable,i dont know.if you want a computer to decide about everything in your car,go play gran tourismo, dont buy cars.ferrari CS , porche GT2 and lambo are pure street racing machines, for driver enthusiasts who want to do everything in their car by themselves.big deal that the sl 55 amg is as fast as maranelo...do you really want to compare these cars??no u dont, because ferrari is much better in all other aspects.
i am a japanese fan myself, but i really admit that GT2 and CS are pure racing machines, making your heart beat faster because you just fall in love with them once you drive them.I think that the Gt2 is a step forward because of the manual transmision, but also a step backwards because of the turbos.I would go for the Gt3 instead.
But in this comparison i would go for the GT2. :D

Choosing one of these cars would be very hard! They are all intoxicatingly good. With the Ferrari you get the full hardcore Ferrari experience but not too much difference from the standard 360. With the Porsche you get trackday thrills and nuclear submarine like engineering but rearwheel drive is a disadvantage. The SL55 AMG is quick enough to blow you socks off but it loses out handling wise and has no fully automatic option. The Gallardo is just perfect: heaps of power, sorted handling and drop dead gorgeous looks. A true supercar!
