This is how BMW's new 5-series saloon is shaping up, three years ahead of its 2009 launch. The sixth-generation 5-series (codenamed F10) is bigger yet lighter, and it should be even better to drive. Most significantly, the design should be far less provocative than the current model's.
How it looks

Inside information leaked to CAR suggests that the flame surfaces, eagle-eye headlamps and eccentric cutlines of today's BMWs won't appear on the 5-series Mk6. The Munich mid-ranger will be a modern-looking and elegant car, wider, with a longer wheelbase and a more dynamic, ground-kissing stance.

The 5-series has BMW's typical wheel at each corner-look, and the glasshouse looks more coupe-like. The rear end is currently looking a little too close to the Hyundai Sonata's for comfort, however.

Under the skin
Despite being bigger, the base Five will weigh less than the outgoing model, thanks to the use of more exotic, lighter materials. But the rear-drive chassis can be loaded up with clever (and heavy) gadgets.

The 5-series will pioneer active rear suspension kinematics capable of coping with higher g-forces, stability-enhancing active yaw control and the next-generation electronic damper control (EDC) which acts on each wheel individually. Active steering and Dynamic Drive (adjustable anti-roll bars) are familiar options.

The base model will be shod with 17-inch wheels, with fatter 18 and 19in rims optional.

BMW hasn't forgotten about environmental initiatives, though. The diesel engines should get urea injection – as Mercedes is pioneering – to cut nitrogen oxide emissions. A stop/start system and upshift indicator for six-speed manual versions will help reduce fuel consumption, and the engines should be biofuel- and synfuel-compatible. Brake energy-regeneration, in combination with adaptive alternator control, should also save up to 10 percent more fuel too.

The engine room
Model Engine
520i 218bhp 2.5-litre
525i 238bhp 3.0-litre
530i 272bhp 3.0-litre
535i 306bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo
540i 367bhp 4.8-litre V8
550i 408bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8
520d 175bhp 2.0-litre four
530d 204bhp 2.5-litre six
245bhp 3.0-litre six
535d 300bhp 3.0-litre six

The inside story
The new Five is longer and wider but sits lower than the current saloon. And with the longer wheelbase, there's more room for rear passengers' legs and heads.

Inside, BMW returns to the driver-oriented cockpit. The centre console is angled towards the person in charge, while the new X5's handsome new joystick gear selector should figure. Instead of a conventional handbrake, F10 features an electro-hydraulic parking brake.

Major changes include a brand-new instrument panel with optional head-up display, improved iDrive with a more intuitive feel and a more logical menu structure. A new draught-free four-zone air conditioning system, dubbed Airwave, is standard on all models, sources say.

And the M5…?
The next M5 supersaloon is scheduled to arrive in late 2010, some six months after the Touring (codenamed F11). It should feature an even more potent 5.5-litre 550bhp version of the awesome V10, and it will definitely get a six- or seven-speed derivative of the twin-clutch transmission that's on the way. That means the sequential SMG cogworks as fitted to today's M5 bite the dust.

uhhh.....no

2009 is too early for the new 5. And i've got on good authority it's going to be the F01, not F10.

The face lift is coming in a couple years and given the shape of the 3 series headlights, i would say this PS job is one of the speculations as to what the facelift will look like. There is way too much E60 in that creation.

the next gen 5 is going to be a 2010 or 2011 MY, depending on wether BMW is going to give it a 6, or 7 year lifespan.

They even have the M release schedule as too early. M versions come out 2 years after initial launch.

I thought the F01 was the new 7?

All pervious models last 7 years, a facelift after the 4th year.

Then again, we do have 2 years until release...

If BMW sticks to their 7 year schedule then the 7 Series should see the new model first then a year later the new 5 Series.

That is only if they stick to the 7 year cycle though.

Hahaha...horrible PS!
The front headlights resemble a X3's.
The front bumper is taken straight from the E90.
The side resembles the current 7-series, especially the side mirrors.
The trunk lid is from the current 5.
And the rear lights are from the Hyundai Sonata

I have the particular pics before being photoshoped and as you can tell, not only from the wheels it is a m5(e60). I was eager to see the upcoming 5series even under heavy camouflage and this is just a slight disappointment. It will probably be some time before we start seing any real test mules or has anyone already have?

Yeah these are the facelifted version, not the new generation as posted in the first page.

no, we won't. See my post on the first page. 2009 leaves only a 5 year span for the E60.

I believe they will run the E60 to 2011 giving it 7 years. Reason being is that currently, 2011-2012 has nothing scheduled for launch at current if the article posted earlier in the BMW News thread is correct. SO, best thing to do is hold off on the next gen 5 until 2011, launch the next X vehicle in 2010 (X3 isn't doing so good so a 6 year lifespan on that would work fine)

launch the next 7 in 2009 (spring of 2008) and leave 2012 as a blank check.

ae86_16v

launch the next 7 in 2009 (spring of 2008) and leave 2012 as a blank check.

The next 3er should be in 2012. . . Introduced in '05, presuming they follow a 7 year lifespan, should end in 2011. So 2012 should be the next 3.

ZfrkS62
01-09-2007, 01:37 AM
model year is 06 though, so you're probably looking at 2013 for the next sedan and 2015 for the coupe. And seeing that the 3 is their bread and butter, it'll follow the 7 year span.

See it takes three years to launch all the models for the 3 series though. Hell we just got the convert. and the M3 isn't out yet. After this BMW will unveil a special car, they've always done this, when they got done redesigning all the models in the 90 s they topped it off with the Z8 Thats how the M1 came to be, Next Year? Z10! Then they start over flagship model first then work they're way down they have added a large coupe in there as well which is why they came out with it in 2004 later then it was suppose to after the 5er.

So it goes, later this year M3, this fall you could see a Z10 maybe next spring. Then Year by Year 7 Series, X6, 5 Series, Z4, Z1, 6 Series, X3, 3 Series, 1 Series, X5, Z16.

well, the 7,5,6 release was fucked up anyway thanks to the fact that the stockholders were screaming for the E65. I think the 7 was released about a year too early. That's why the E60 didn't have anywhere near the problems the E65 did because BMW had to field test the damn thing instead of doing their full R&D on it.

BMW has a tendency to be very conservative with their bhp-figures and they propably don't want it to step in too much on the M5:s territory. Marketing you know.
