Those pics were first seen some months ago I think. There is also a short video clip around. And there is already another topic with pics of the E60 M5 -> http://www.motorworld.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2881
Noting new unfortunatelly. I just hope that they will leave a manual gearbox and SMG only as an option (unlike on the M3 CSL).

I agree with you there hgt, I would not mind it as an option, but standard! No way!

Is it going to be a V-10 with an SMG?

Hey Pimrusis !!!
As far as I know you are correct, the ///M5 will be fitted with a V10 and a 7 speed SMG or standard manual.

I already read it but I didn't believe it would have a 7 speed gearbox and i am not convinced yet. I will wait for the official presentation. For the engine, it's sure it will be a V10 but the capacity is not determinated : 5 or 5.5 litres ?
Anyway, the power should be higher than 500 bhp, but as it's N/A engine it will have a deficience of torque compare to the E55 so I am not sure it will accelerate as hard ...
Yep, the V10 is for sure and probably 5,5 litre 550 bhp. Eventhough this SMG III will be better than the current SMG (which I've tried on a Z4 3,0 and it sucked a lot) I would always prefer a manual. Especially in a BMW (made by ZF or Getrag).

Note that the SMG that you can find in a Z4 or 3 series is not really the same you have in the M3 (and I suppose future M5). It does not have the same hardware and I'm not sure they come from the same manufacture. The faster the M3 SMG changes gear is 80 milliseconds (claimed) and the Z4 is 150.
Exactly. The one on ///M3 is called SMG III (as I wrote above). It is supposed to be smarter and has the regulation of speed of gear changes. But here neither the smartness (software) nor the quickness were the issue. It's just the whole idea. Maybe after 10 years of developement those systems will be fine, but for now - no way for me.
But the news is that BMW will probably build an M7 with.... 700bhp. Which in fact should be no surprise if they want to keep the sporty badge over M-B and their 65 AMG cars.

An M7? Do you have any more info about that? The mother of all limosines...
There has been some rumor about it some months ago and it's been confirmed in Dec, but I'm afraid that it's still a long way to it's debut. No testing cars or infos so it will take some time yet.
Something like that: :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sorry to burst your bubble mate,
I highly doubt BMW will create an M7, I read it somewhere where they believe that its unessecery. I disagree with what they think, but unfortunately I doubt an M7 will be born somtime soon.....
And with the M5's transmissions, they better have a manual available.
It would be so stupid to have SMG only, it would steal so many sales!
But damn, SMG with V10!!!! F1 for the road!!! :D

Who would they get 700 horses out of a N/A engine? Cause BMW doesn't like to supercharge I don't think.
They would use a V-10 on the M7, but a V-12! and if they wanted turbocharge it.

I heard somewhere that BMW might be bringing in forced induction to some cars.
(I heard an upcoming 530i (new E60 shape) with a 3 liter turbocharged straight six!!!!! with acceleration to 100km (60mph) in 5.5 seconds!!!)

Never say never, future M7 is possible.

I read about turbocharged 530i in the french press too . And I don't really believe in the M7 :?: but why not, it would be great !

01-03-2004, 02:27 AM
Yeah a M7 would be great.
All they really need to do is weld 2 BMW S54 engines (E46 M3 engines) together.
You'd get over 700hp with that and its NA!!!
The DB7 Vantage did that but with Ford Mondeo V6s. Imagine the results with 2 M3 engines!!!!!!!!!! 8)

wouldn't be cool if BMW created a "new "version for every number, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 sedans convertibles, ///m's and everything, but look at this
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/333999 the z21 allready exists and its on the BMW building in germany, but never in production! anyway the z5 is phat!
As we know BMW can make over 100 bhp / litre. Honda can make 120 bhp / litre. So to make 700bhp from their V12 (maybe enlarged) should be no problem.
And yes there were rumors about turbocharged inline-6 for the 5 series some time ago. It was supposed to make 380 bhp as something between 545i and M5.
Will it see production - only time will tell.

Hmmmm,
Well BMW's M54 straight six engines are going to be replaced soon when the next generation 3 series is released. The current engines were introduced in 2001 and were featured in the 530i (predecessor 528i), 525i (predecessor 523i), 520i (predecessor also named 520i but new M54 engine had 2.2 liters instead of 2.0),
320, 325,330
(yes some of these models did not make it to the United States)
I am geussing, when they release the next generation straight sixes, thats when they will couple a turbo to it :)

The new M5 looks awesome, but I hope it has some real racing brakes this time around... like six piston calipers with drilled rotors would be nice.

I hope they will have SMG and a manual option there.

it has been officialy confirmed, that the M5 is going to have 404KW (550HP) 5.5 V10. The car it self should be introduced on Autoshow in Geneva (in spring 2004)

If the M5 is competitively priced it'll probably demolish all the cars in its class. I know that the E55 is one of the fastest saloons on the planet at the moment, but nothing'll beat the M5's V10...i hope it sounds sweet!

That's funny considering the fact that the 760Li already uses a V-12

bmw can get more than 100bhp per liter, just like any car company, anyone can make a 3.5liter 900+bhp engine but ware and tear (and emissions) are the only thing stoping it from going into production. but anyways, i don't think they will ever get rid of the I6 "they built the best straight six engines in the world" (Jay leno) and i don't think they should make an m7, they have a 760 if u want more from your 7 series, and nothing has been confirmed from bmw about the next m5 we will just have to wait till march

well, I've got it from a Czech site, it was announced back in september. there was no other info, but what I've written. Of course this might be untrue. But will see in a couple of months :).

Black wheels? Uhmmm I like it. I hope engine will be V10... it can be powerful!!!! Sure it will be better.
the new m5 will be v-10, the M7 would be V-12.

BMW has gone on the record saying they would never make an M7 for two reasons: 1) the 7 series is a low volume model already 2) 7 series customers are not interested in increased performance (it already has a grunty V12) at the expense of comfort (which M spec suspension would require). So I doubt we'll ever see one.
As for the M5, I'm really looking forward to its revealing--can't wait to hear that V10 hit 9000 rpm !

i dont believe that there will be an m7,i had read in a magazine some months ago that an m7 wont represent the philosophy of the m department, although if they wont to compete with the faster version of the s class they should at least increase the horsepower of the 760

Because Mercedes knows that the new M5 will be quicker than the E55, thats why they are building the E60 AMG with a six-litre V8 engine over 500Bhp, and a 7G-Tronic gearbox....
I read it here:

I don't know what it would change as the E55 already has 476 (and certainly 500 like the SL55) bhp. I don't believe that, but of course i can be wrong.

I love the new M5, if the weight will not be too high this'll be a real funny car, in the other hand, it'll be one of the fastest saloon in straight line.
And, man, it was true the engine can rev to 9000rpm and beyond?
I dont know if i like the name E-60 AMG, E-55 just sounds so much sleeker and meaner. One question about the new M5 will it be able to slide like the older one, just watch what tiff did in that car.

I didn't say that the E60 AMG will have 500Bhp... I don't think they will only increase the Bhp by 24...for sure it will have around 550...according to AMG!
With 9000Rpm for the new M5...thats good for racing, but what about driving in the city? Will it have enough torque at low RPM?
Considering its a V-8 with pretty high displacement, you should have to worry about some low end grunt. You should atleast get 200 or so lbs at 2500 rpms.
