I came across this video:
evolution bov - YouTube
Stock, it's an internal wastegate. I've seen lots of BOVs, but this is the first external wastegate application that I've seen. If there's anyone who's knowledgeable on them, are they good or bad? Do they help or hurt performance?
I like the way that it sounds, but if it's bad for power (and the car) then I wouldn't do it.

?? Wastegates are used to regulate the amount of boost ..... I really don't understand ur question
blow off valves are used to release of pressure buildup during sudden off-throttle.

What I meant to say is that stock, the Evo has an internal wastegate. Would it be beneficial or detrimental to put in an external wastegate? I've seen/heard BOVs before, but this is the first external wastegate that I've heard.

That really depends how much boost you are running.

20psi

That probably at the edge of the stock internal one's capability. External one generate less turbulence in the exhaust stream.

So, do you think that it would be beneficial? On stock engines, Evo guys like the stock internal wastegate because it spikes to 21psi and then tapers to 18psi. Apparently because the internal wastegate can't open quickly enough.
From what I've been reading, external wastegates are good for "high horsepower" engines. 400hp and 21psi seems pretty high to me, but they're only using them on stroker kits and bigger turbos.

It should give you tiny difference in more consistent boost...but otherwise you shouldn't expect big gains....plus u also have to take care of the internal one when "install" the external one.

That doesn't sound simple to do...
just upgrade your turbo to one with on an internal one and then just have an external one and solve both problems. 8)

Stock one has an internal one. I just love the chatter of the external wastegate.
^^^ i am saying get rid of your stock turbo, where the internal one is located. and just have a external BOV. they both serve the same perpose pretty much.

Heh... not a cheap solution. How hard is it to weld the internal wastegate shut and add an external one?

btw, the wastegate only makes noise if u decided to dump it to atmosphere instead of to the exhaust.
TNT: no, BOV and wastegate don't serve the same purpose

Thanks! Looks like welding it shut is probably the best option.
Now to find out which one is the best. I guess I'll go to the source and ask them:
