There are different rules and training all over the world, over here you can get an automatic transmission lisence ONLY, but barely anyone does it.
How is it with you? Can you drive a stick? or...http://www.rs6.com/smilies/Joystick.gif

It's the same here. Most people that get a license for an automatic transmission are often handicapped.
And yes I can drive a stick very well :)

an acquaintance of me, actually did it because (yes SHE) thought it was more practical.http://www.rs6.com/smilies/doh.gif Quote: My parents cars are automatics, and when I'm going to buy a car, I'll just buy an automatic"...well...but you'll never be able to borrow or rent any other car that isn't an automatic. She didn't care, and also failed her final driving test 3 times

In the US the majority drives automatics (Not too hard to believe). There is no difference in your license whether you drive an automatic or manual transmission..
Although if you take your drivers test in a car with a manual transmission, in addition to the regular test they will make you stop and go on a hill to make sure you do not roll back down the hill.

The majority of cars in Japan are automatics as well.
I can drive a stick with no problems, though my current car is an automatic. I just dont' care right now. I wouldn't by anything "sporty" with an auto though.

Same here with the difference between manual and auto. You can get a license for auto only, but most people don't do that.
ditto.
I can drive a manual or my WRX has been taking itself around the track since I got it.

your drivers' licence is supposed to be the ability to drive a car.... auto/maneul whatever.
Long ago, my sporty driving lead to my roommate buying a stick... he almost had to get rid of it because he couldn't drive the stick for about 3 weeks..... i dont know how the clutch lasted those weeks  now he's ok.... but definately not able to maximize his cars potential :(

Funny :) I thought a week of practice for anyone in a manual transmission would be enough for them to get it down.. I guess some people just suck at driving ;P

well... here we obtain the license after signing some papers that says something like this: "I am fully responsible for the consecuences, and I know them, of driving a car"
no theory exam, nothing at all
you only need to take a "test" so you can drive hauling vehicles, 3 1/2 tons trucks, etc

Yeah here if you get a auto license you cant drive a manual.
If you get a manual license you can drive both.
You can get an automatic license over here but who get's it can't drive a manual and I really don't think they want to.
If you have a manual ofcource you do drive both.
Couple of years back they only gave the automatic to handicaps and ladies but now anybody.
I got a manual and my car is a manual and the clutch is still holding..

You can take your test in New South Wales in either transmission, but if you take it in auto, you can't drive manuals. Not many people take the manual test. This is because after you wait a year, you can drive manuals anyway, without taking the test again.
