On July 4, I was at an American-themed bar in New Zealand (no kidding) and all they were showing on these massive screens was World's Strongest Man reruns. After consuming some beer, it was actually remarkably entertaining watching folks lug around tires, metal canisters, trucks etc.

LOL, the US captain looks like Scott Stiener.
I dont know, I think if the US actually had more people interested in strongman competitions we would put up a pretty good fight.
I have squat maxed 600lbs myself and I realized that I am weak :?
Put some NFL players on it. Larry Allan's bench max is over 700lbs, and that man can move

Meh all that benching is kinda useless.
When I see an NFL player pull some train cars lift some cars then I'll say they have a chance.
I dont think people realize how strong these "strongmen" are.

lifting different sized boulders is pretty nuts; then placing them on a pedistal.
the lumber jack competitions are pretty extreme too

Yep, very different use of muscles in comparison to NFL.

Oh im not downsizing what the strongmen do. I personally think the hardest thing they do carrying those boulders and stuff. The train car competition is mostly about leverage, lower body strength, upper body stablization and momentum. The hard part is getting it moving, and honestly I think there are a few NFL players that could do it. Now the other shit is a different story.
The bench max was just a pointless quantitive number. Although the strongman competition isnt based of a bench, you have to realize the bench is not all about your chest. You wont find somebody with a big bench, but has weak triceps and shoulders.

Also, playing football myself and knowing what it is like............Trust me there are not many muscles that are not used in a game of football. If you know somebody that play rugby (which involves pretty much the same movements) ask them how you have to work every muscle possible in order to be phyically ready.
Anyway some of the other stronger people in the world, are world class track and field throwers. A group of them have squate maxes of a 1000 lbs or more.

TBH, people should remember that an average man can't Bench his own bodyweight, or do more than a couple of Chin-Ups.

Bench is 90 percent form anyway. Im stronger pound for pound now then I have been since I competed in wrestling, yet I couldnt bench anywhere near what I could 2 years ago cause I don't bench.

All it does is slows you down, benching I mean...well for boxing anyway.
Ever since i picked up boxing all I have been doing is body weight exercises.
Different forms of pushups, bag work, chin ups, sit ups, swimming etc...
I am stronger then I ever was and I just dont see the need for machines.
And I have been putting on quite a bit of muscle doing body exercises.

^different type of muscle, fast twitch versus slow. Slow twitch has its uses too. Typically a big time athlete would do weights in the off season but not touch them during. (back in the day I was a pretty high caliper wrestler.. Sadly, though Im only 25, age has not been kind)

Yeah I have started to focus on various types and sets of push ups. I havnt tried a bench in about 2 months but I feel stronger than I have in a while.
I think i will check my strength when i go back to school in a few weeks.
