Overview of the car brands and their connections

I'm writing my thesis about the automotive industry and I came by this IMO very cool overview of the major players in de sector. I thought some of you might be interested in this overview.

I knew about 99% of these connections but I was surprised to see that hyundai en DaimlerChrysler were so closly linked. Is this correct??

And I think the connection between BMW & DaimlerChrysler is a mistake.

I'm sure you'll get more than a 10, as automobiles are a hobby for you and spending time studying them shoudn't be too boring... btw what is exactly the name of your studies?

I'm studying "handelswetenschappen" = rough translated, business science in Brussels. But I've done and finished an IT graduate course before that.

I do wonder about the BMW and Mercedes connection. I would love to see closer sharing of technology and business practices between the two companies.

I'm not to sure about this graph, I do know for a fact that GM and BMW have a very tight relationship, swapping parts, collaborating design, they are very different companies but work together a lot (some have wondered for years if GM didn’t own BMW).

As for as Daimler BMW, a while back they formed the alliance to build more efficient vehicles but that also included GM, that was that engine last spring that the three debuted.

Mercedes and BMW are two very different companies, to see them work together; I have a hard time seeing.

A BMW Toyota relationship, ha do Americans like the French? I don’t think so. BMW has had lawsuits on Toyota for the last 20 years, for the Japanese stealing engine patents to design patents.

Also GM owns KIA, yet they are on opposite ends of the chart.

The Subaru thing is wrong because they’ve joined up with Suzuki.

- a brand in a square is the main brand, like for instance General Motors
- a fat line without an arrow means that the brand is part of the main brand connected to it
- a fat line with an arrow means one brand owns a large number of stocks of the other brand
- a dotted line is a joint venture = a sort of alliance, mostly with asian companies
- a thin line = an alliance

the weird thing is that in 2004 MG Rover still existed, so it should have been mentioned if it's that old, no?

I've allready emailed the author of the article about his source but he doesn't reply :? And the crappy thing is that it's an article from a mens magazine, that I can't mention as a legitemate source in my thesis.

This just shows that nowdays everybody is somehow related to somebody else. It's also interesting to see that Porsche seems to be the most independent company in this chart.

Porsche has never really been independent IMO. Yes, they're an independent fiscal unit but when you've got people that are a member of the board of directors of Porsche and VW at the same time... you can't really call them independent.
