Mercedes McLaren SLR 175.7 mph
Ford GT 174.3 mph
Porsche Turbo 162.6 mph
Bentley Flying Spur 157.4 mph
Corvette Z06 167.0 mph
BMW M6 162.5 mph
Alpina B5 155.4 mph
Shelby Daytona Cobra 159.7 mph
Holden Maloo 160.8 mph
Less than a week ahead of the British Motor Show, the folks at Autocar magazine rounded up a group of supercars to see which could hit the highest speed for an official Guinness Book of Records entry for the "London Land Speed Record." The test took place on an airport runway, which was cleared for the event. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren took the honors with a record 175.7 mph. Also on the tarmac was a Ford GT which achieved 174.3 mph and a Corvette Z06 which reached a top speed of 167 mph. "The McLaren has the power, the technology and the stability to hit those high speeds with incredible control," added Sutcliffe. "This is the fastest any production car has ever been driven legally in London". Each vehicle was given a rolling start and the length of the City Airport's one-mile runway in which to set the fastest time, 3 runs per vehicle. Cars entered the main runway via a slip road at 70-80 mph.
Now I'd like to see that SLR go up against a Veyron and CCX... then we'll see who's the fastest.

Good question!
And what about the Busa, why wasn't that in? :?

The ZX-14 is faster than the 'busa, so I guess they just took the fastest production motorcycle of this moment.

I am surprised they put an aussie pickup/ute in the list. Wasnt as far away to some of them as I thought it was going to be. :hmm:
Motortrend (magazine here in the US) does better speed test then that, and they do it nearly every year.
GO FORD!!!!!

A lot faster
395+ km/h compared to 333 km/h for the SLR
it'll even beat the new 722 version and Brabus version
What a crock.
"A rolling start with cars entering at about 70 or 80mph..."
Either do a standing mile... or a flying mile, but this half-baked setup is a farce.

Agreed. Standing Mile would be the best way to go. If you can't get out the gate and hold your own from there, you're fucked. Besides, the Z06 has already been proven by a bigoted red-coat that it's capable of starting in 5th, reaching 175, and still have more to go before at end of the strip.
The SLR won't hang from a dead stop. I can promise you that.

Do you mean the SLR cannot hang with a ZO6 in a standing mile dead stop race??

No, that would be a good fight out of the gate, but i think once the SLR got over it's fluid coupling lag invoked by that POS torque converter the Z06 would have to slot in it's slip stream. I like the Z06, but i'm not a fanboy.
Compared to the others though, it's got nothing.

I'd take a 3 speed auto Vector W8, and whoop them all... id bet 200 mph would be attainable in the exact same conditions... and even better with a standing start comparo

I wouldn't mind who won - but a flying mile or standing start are the only controlled tests.
A "70 or 80mph entry from a slip road" is just pointless.
And for Guiness World records to bother showing up does ntohing to lend credibility to the entire setup.
I should go set up a Guiness World record for fastest metal shopping cart from the front of the Main Street Woolworth to the houseware isle - with a 5mph rolling start out of the express lane....

well, at 50 mph, sparks start flying pretty quickly, and upon hitting a curb; it is liable to shoot 30-40 feet in the air. 8) :D
