Snowboarding Tips?

any tips for a beginner?

I went for the first time about 2yrs ago in Canada and made the mistake of not getting lessons. We also decided to go straight for the highest peak.....4hrs later we made it down with major ass injuries! :P

My advice - get lessons from a pro (even if only one) so you don't waste too much time on your backside. Its all in the knees and about balance, once you get it its like riding a bike. :D

yeah, i definitely recommend to take some lessons from a pro. i worked as a snowboard teacher some years ago and it's really better to do so. if you're a talent 2 days are enough, then you can improve your skills for yourself. but the first two days i really recommend to take some lessons. you'll learn how to do the basic stuff right. afterwards you'll have time to get more experience and improve your riding. and it will definitely make more fun this way.

i know a lot of guys who tried it alone and gave up after one or two days... that's sad then boarding is really GREAT!

and make sure that you'll have good equipment, rent it in a professional store with good consulting.

Been snowboarding for almost 12 years and I got one tip for you... patient!
You are gonna fall over and break your ass and everything, but it's just a matter of getting up on your feet and try again! Don't give up.

i'm going to perisher, about 5 hrs drive from sydney.

i definately will take lessons. lessons come with equipment hire for free.

i'll be there for 3 days so hopefully my 3rd day will have some successful runs.

yea, the shop owner that sells snow equipment told me to have plenty of patience.

Just come back from snowboarding this weekend....

Lean Forward, opposite to wake boarding where you lean back.

Figure out how to stop on the beginner slopes. --> NB!

Don't go all the way to the top of the slope on your first run, you'll look and feel like an arse coming down.

Watch the leading edges, or you'll end up eating snow...

WHEN you fall don't put out your hands... If you do, your hand sinks in the snow slightly and then compresses, your wrist then takes all of your weight often ending in a sprain, fracture or break. Tuck your arms in...

Don't let that scare you though, after a couple hours of figuring out the basics, it gets a lot easier, and what a feeling when it starts coming right!

You don't need tips if you are taking lessons, so have fun!!

The hard part will be switching from a left turn to a right turn (and vice versa). Make sure to keep the leading edge up, if it catches, you are hitting the ground.

I assume they'll help you setup the bindings and stuff. Ask them to add a few degress of forward lean in the bindings highbacks. It'll make turning a bit easier.
