Government promotes stunt to deter `motorheads' from racing

MARKHAM — The Ontario government crushed two tricked-out Hondas into a heap of scrap metal Thursday as part of an effort by Attorney General Michael Bryant to discourage ``motorheads" from racing on public streets.

The spectacle, performed in front of a horde of television cameras in this sprawling suburb just north of Toronto, came on the same day the federal government introduced new legislation to criminalize the increasingly popular activity.

"We are taking away these hot wheels from the people who use them forever," Bryant said as he presided over the theatrics, which featured a massive front-end loader crushing the cars on the driveway of a Markham paving company.

And Thursday's exhibition was just the start, Bryant said.

"We're not just going to take your keys away for a few weeks," he said. "We are going to take your precious vehicles from you."

Used in races in 2003 and 2004, the province took possession of the cars under the Civil Remedies Act, a law passed last December which allows police to seize property used in illegal activities.

The pair are the first street racing cars to be destroyed under that law, but Bryant said he expects more will meet the same fate.

The modified vehicles had been gutted — including the removal of the back seats and interior panels — to make them run faster.

One, a 1995 blue Honda Civic, was taken after an officer caught a 23-year-old man racing at a over 180 km/hr on a Markham street. The vehicle, outfitted with a TV screen and video game console on the dashboard, was registered to the racer's mother.

Street racing has killed 34 people in the Greater Toronto Area since 1999, including a couple who stumbled upon a race on Toronto's central Yonge St. when returning from their 17th wedding anniversary celebration.

Police said officers are reporting a rise in the number of races. Scarier still, the practice has moved from little-used back roads onto busy highways, said Sgt. David Mitchell, an internationally recognized leader in drag racing policing.

"Society has become more 24-hour-oriented," Mitchell said. ``There's always someone out on that roadway."

They took out the back seats and interior panels to reduce weight, then they added a TV and games console - they're smart I tell you!!!

I hope this applies only to street racing, and not anyone caught doing 180kmh (i.e. on their own on a country road).

Saw it on tv - it pretty funny and rightfully so - Street racing has to stop.

They need to build a track or two around here

that's fucking awesome
it's kinda like Canada is taking lessons from southwest-Asia/northern-African countries, where some of them will cut off your hand for stealing. very similar idea here, and it really might work out. i'd bet this new law will really be a good deterent to street racing, not many of those idiot ricers will want to lose their rides.

I don't like ricers just as much as the next guy on JW, but I think it's wrong to just take away people's cars and destroy them. I mean, people driving drunk kill an exponentially larger number of people than street racing does every year, and yet they don't get their cars permanently confiscated. Plus, drunk drivers can be back on the road and driving in as little as 2 months after the offense if they get an occupational license. I'm not sure which one, but this definitely seems like it violates some kind of civil property right.

Thank you for a common sense approach.

This is close to the dumbest thing witnessed.

Are they going to crush some hockey players $400,000 car when he gets caught "street racing".

The only reason they go afetr these "ricers" as agressively as this is that they are not the powerful or rich lobbyists who can impact the polictal futures of the idiots who came up with this idea.

In fact - these ricer races represent everything the "racisist elite" in canada despise :P

I haven't been following the news recently, but didn't they propose to increase the maximum jail time to a life sentence for street racing?

Sgt. David Mitchell, an internationally recognized leader in drag racing policing.

Woah...these guys are really serious.

The facts happened before the new laws, so they can't be judged by the new laws.

There is no judgment regarding the seizure of cars. The cars were seized after the Act came into effect last December, in any case.

Are they going to crush some hockey players $400,000 car when he gets caught "street racing".

They'll probably auction it off. In any case, he's not going to get it back.

I think it's wrong to just take away people's cars and destroy them.

Lots of illegal things can get confiscated and destroyed. Too bad. That's life. Don't they have police auctions over there, where the cops flog all the stuff they've confiscated? These ricers aren't fit to be sold, so they're destroyed.

Cant you just laugh at the ricers for once?

How so? I'm sure they could sell them just as easily as the other junk at the auctions.

I'm really hating being in Canada right now, this whole focus lately on street racing is a bit pathetic. There are so many more important things we should be focusing on rather than a couple people racing their cars once in a while. I mean c'mon, street racing has been around for 50+ years now, where was all of the outrage and such then?

Get the fucking crackheads and hookers off my streets, throw some more money and manpower into finding missing children, and so on, then you can worry about Johnny Tran double clutching his S2000 down a wet nighttime street.

With a specific law on 'street racing' and a more severe penalty than lesser traffic offences, you can bet you'd probably be dinged for street racing even if you're just speeding. What's to stop the cop from saying they saw lights in the distance ahead of you, and thus you were street racing them? Nothing.

If something wrong has been going for 50+ years, we shouldn't stop them. Hmm...Bank robbing has been going around for 100+ years, maybe we should legalize it. Are you one of the ppl they are focusing on that's why you want the focus on something else? Street racing kills many ppl on the road each year, but of course, fucking a hooker should deserve more attention cause they are spreading aids and aids kills ppl. It's a political act, I know, but better than doing nothing about nothing.

nickthaskater

Bank robbing may have been going on for a long time as well, but there's always been active efforts to prevent things like that from happening. Street racing on the other hand, didn't really get any attention until shit like Fast and The Furious came around. You know what their main statistic is for all these propositions and actions? 34 street racing related deaths in the greater Toronto area in seven years. Fuck, I will bet my left nut that more people have died as a result of alcohol and smoking, yet both of those things are perfectly legal.

And no, I'm not a street racer, I'm not into that (I prefer cruising on my own), but to see this much manpower and emphasis put on something so insignificant compared to other things that are going on just pisses me off.

Alcoholics kill themselves only, second-hand smoke kills, that is why indoor smoking has been banned on all public areas. Yes, you can choose to kill your old child in your own home, but not some stranger coming into ur house and kill them by giving them second hand smoke. Street racing kills innocents like gang shootings.

SFDMALEX

THe problem with street racing is the defenition. I mean they can call speeding on the highway street racing. Or blip of the throttle on a red light street racing...

What they need to do is stop giving 16 year old kids license.

And instead of sending cops to hustle young people at the beach for drinking they should send more cops in the streets.

Cops in Toronto spend too much time on bullshit. I experianced it first hand. Quite a few accidents where I got hustled by the cops for some retarted reason. Like my budy being drunk and walking with our help. Like me and some buddies having some beers at the beach, or just chillin at a park.

One instance they had 3 crusers come, it was 6 of us, at a park after a game of football just conversing. My fucking tax money at work eh? 3 cruisers, 6 cops for half an hour worth of their time, and half an hour of declined calls on their radio.....for what?

The cops decided to search us....

Send cops in the streets to prevent shit like street racing, and tell them to stop fucking huslting down teenagers at parks and beaches.

Alcoholics kill plenty of other people with drunken violence and drunk driving, and you don't have to be indoors to be caught out by second hand smoke.

Seriously, use your head for a second.
