View Full Version : Muay Thai
There is a local studio (20-30 mins) that offers a class in Muay Thai once a week. I was wondering if anyone has knowledge of this art, and if i should ask any questions to the studio. I will mainly be doing this for fitness and to stay active and since it is once a week i can fit it in between classes. Also what would be to costly for a once a week class?
here is their website

Reason I say boxing is because the only people I meet that can actually hold their own in a fight are boxers.
Ive seen d00des from Karate to Muay Thai who cant do fuck all in a real fight.
Nor are they in shape.
Masters of the sport are a different thing.
But if want to learn to fight, hit a boxing gym. Get in shape, and get your ass in the ring and get yo' ass whooped a couple of times to see that you aint shit, then spar some more till you know what you doing
I shouldnt speak cause my cardio is shit.
But I can still get my ass in the ring for 2rounds and whoop some ass... Cause my buddy just took up kick boxing. I havent been in a ring in ages. But anyway, I whooped his 1 min in :D I still got the moves.

it depends what kind of training people are getting. I know the people I'm with if anything ever goes down each of us can hold our own. Getting trained by a pro like guiseppe denatale and sometimes duke roufus is good they're both pricks when it comes to training but it pays off in the end. Plus Joe Doerksen(ufc) comes come to train there to. Sparing is every saturday I spar twice a month depending on when fights are coming up.
You see because you are serious about it
However most of these joints here, are made to look like some fucking yoga class......They dont teach you how to fight but to scream lol...And mad respect to those who are in there to learn how to brake a leg.
In boxing that just doesnt happen. Most people who get into it, if they dont get out the next week, they stay in, and know what they are doing.
Thats the only difference.

A friend of mine used to be at the top of his weightclass in Europe in Muay Thai (No BS), he said boxers were easy to fight simply because after one or two kicks at the legs it would be over for them.

^^^ is that you?
i am basically looking to tone up, i like my weight and build, i could get a little more cut. But i just want an all around good build. i am 5'10 and around 165-170lbs (depends on the day). I was very active in high school but i had a nerve problem in my leg and had to stop. so i was/am looking to get back into being active.

true, i'm not an agressive person at all, i never get into fights, gladly. i just like knowing that i could probably get out of a situation in one piece, and its also good for my confidence.
Kickboxing is probably a very effective way of defending yourself also, but if i see it on TV it just looks kinda vulgar and agressive to me...(boxing looks cleaner to me) but ofcourse im measuring with a double standard because krav maga is probably a lot more brutal, but you just never see the effects of it like in a kickboxing match.

Find a school that specializes specifically in muay thai. Also just go and look at some schools before you decide to join a club. Muay Thai is the best for learning how to be a good striker and finish someone off. It also involves knees and elbows. Lunging knees and flying elbows are the shit in street fights cause they happen quick and sometimes you can cut someone open with an elbow. Once you get things down with your timing everything comes naturally when you get into a fight. It flows really well and your punches are like bricks and kicks hurt like a bitch.
I've been training muay thai for about two solid years. Going everyday 5-6 days a week. One class won't be enough to get you in shape and you'll probably want to go to more classes the better you get. Your first month depending on how you train maybe two or three depending on the shape you are in is going to be the hardest but once you get in shape to keep up with the rest of the class you'll move up quickly.
For my class I pay about $60CDN per month but I get trained by pros regularly Guiseppe Denatale/Dave Horvath and when fights are coming up Duke Roufus comes in to get us ready. Theres other places in my city for like 170 a month but the trainers and the quality of fighters are much better at my place.
To go to a class once a week and pay for a membership plus equipment (boxing gloves, wraps, shorts/tshirt we don't wear uniforms, shin guards, plus sparring gear if you decide to spar) wouldn't be worth it unless you go consistently.
