future of 911

with the 997 line up almost complete, except the Turbo S & GT2 (if they do make'em). i doubt porsche can increase their engine performance anymore. they used to compete with the F360s but with the new F430s with its 480-490bhp engine seems out of reach for the NA porsches.

my question is when will they move on to an 8+ cylinder engine? will they still manage to put the engine at the back? :)

But I have heard of the V8 being used ... In the 911 it's hard to say if they'll stick with the 6 and just up the displacement again or just switch to the V8. Either way it'll always be in the back of the 911 and will always be a challenger to Ferrari

They dont even change car design, dont expect them to change engine size.

i suspect that they will keep the 911 purely as a boxer 6 model, and then create a successor to the 928 to battle the fezzas. kina makes sense, i guess.

When they developed this new engine generations, I remember they said they made the engine in such a way that would be possible to increase the displacamente to more than 4 liters... I don't see them changing the engine architecture.. they don't need to. :)

You'd probably have to look at whether Porsche and Ferrari are really aiming at the same market. Keep in mind Ferraris are a bit more expensive than Porsches. The people who buy Ferraris have shitloads of money, and can spend big. Money is no option for most of them, and the more expensive the better. Porsche cars are more affordable to the general public.

porsche have made boxer 8's before ;)

i suspect we'll see them in the very next generation... but this 997 generation are going to continue making higher revving, and larger displacement engines...

My guess is that Porsche will stick to the current recipe, rear engined flat 6, maybe a small bump in the displacement but nothing more. Maybe they will reincarnate the 944 and pitch that up with Ferrari and Lambo.

ferraris arent for hard use, more for the boulevards.. With porsche it is driving on daily basis, just read metcalfe´s ferrari stories from evo´s fast fleet and you know what i mean.. www.evo.co.uk

And what comes to topic, i think 997tt shows how porsche has no problem with smaller engines, it pulls hard with turboes, without big lag.

I have the impresion that an F430 wouldnt last as long as the porsche in terms of clutch and maintainance, but I much rather have a Ferrari.
