Tell your dad how fun and educational an autocross session can be. You can learn a lot about car control in a safe environment, much more safer than running on a road course; unless you drive like an ass. Things like corner entry and extreme transient maneuvers, experiencing ABS lock-up can all be experienced in a controlled environment for the first time, compared to experiencing them in an emergency situation on the street for the first time.
He sounds like a cool dad, maybe you can persuade him to attend the school with you? Would be a great father/son bonding experience.
P.S.- Give me the keys to your car- I'll put the 300 miles on it in one day! :D

Bring it ... and I don't think it is racing per se. I am gonna treat it like a driver's ed session .. i.e. learn how to negotiate slalom smoothly. Not going to rip thru the gears, punish the brakes even if means bottoming the time charts...

Oohhh...wish I had a car that I would be at ease driving around an autocross course...and that I happened to be in the Houston area, this looks like a really excellent opportunity to get some decent instruction and have quite a lot of track time. I looked up the Michigan chapter of the SCCA and it appears that there are similar events around here, so perhaps a JW autocross meet can be arranged :-D

What a freaking blast it was.
And before any one says anything :P oscar put down a 38s fast run - and I did a 40s... ;)
But consider I was doing my pace runs and was about to make my fast run - but they closed the course before I could get it done - I had 4 runs - he had 5 (the last being his quickest ;))
On the plus side I did pull 1.4G on the skid pad ;)
Pics and video to follow.

And thanks 4 recognizing Paul, yet ur data is incorrect ;) lol, my last run was a 39.. i think i hit a cone... my only clean run was my 38... which was my second to last :P , but we didnt have enough track time to actually try out new lines or tecniques, it all went by soo fast!
And ur 1.4G's was when u spun out!
haha
seriouslly, ur was looked really good out there, a couple more runs, and more throttle would have gotten u in the 37 or 38.
And samero looked good too yet i dont know if its the car but it didnt seem to be at its limit... i know its heavy and all...
oh and i got a few pics, they suk but hey theyr a start till RC post his good pics and his video, i want too see my runs really bad! too bad no one got us in the actual track though... that would have been some good video...

I had a blast yesterday.
There were 4 training events and an Autocross to round things up.
- Skidpad (100 ft)
- Slalom
- Braking
- Beans and Beans - small oval course with increasing and decreasing radius turns.
Oscar, RC and me were in the same group. Another friend of RC's who drove a 911 was in another group.
We started with Skidpad exercise where the first thing out of the mouth of the instructor was - "Anyone with BMWs - they are restricted to a max of 5 laps." Apparently some of the Bimmers faced oil starvation issues on the skidpad and suffered seized engines. The skidpad was quite fun, we got to a speed where the wheel was held stationary and the car's attitude was controlled by throttle position. I think AWD made it very, very stable here but RWD allows a little more throttle control. The STi has a cool switch which allows the torque to be sent to the rear. Oscar reported that the car handled much better this way.
On one of my loops on the skidpad, the woman instructor told me to really gas it and when I did so my car lurched a couple feet sideways in a brutal manner. Soon after the check engine light came out. I thought the curse of the BMWs had come upon me. Fortunately, the light went out after some time. It was a few anxious moments though. The Gods of Audi were looking after me today. :)
We next went to Slalom which was a really fun course. I was a real thrill flinging the car from side to side and I really thought my car did very well - no lurching or swaying unnecessarily - it acquitted itself very well. The slalom teaches you to look ahead and turn well ahead of the cone. I felt I really learned something here.
Then we did the Beans exercise which was the most fun course - taking an increasing radius corner at full power makes you feel that all is right with the world. The decreasing radius corners taught me to be patient on entry - slow in fast out. RC seemed to have a lot of fun playing with the gas pedal teasing the rear end out.
Then we did the braking exercise which made us hit the brake pedals hard enough to trigger the ABS and figure out for ourselves how much we can brake without locking the wheels. I could see RC laying a lot of rubber down on the standing start all the way to the braking point. He seemed to enjoy it.
After a bit of lunch we went to the Autocross - did a walkthru first and then hit the track which had a lot of slaloms, sweepers, etc. Unfortunately our group didn't get as much track time as the last one. I particularly needed it as I DNF'd the first two runs - got confused with the cones  . The instructor then made me make a slow lap to learn it properly and then afterwards I finally did a nice clean lap (41s). Unfortunately I couldnt do any more runs. Disappointing as I finally got the hang of the circuit. There were seconds to be made up but I think my fat piggie did a good job on the circuit.
So all in all a great day. I think I learned quite a bit....
Cheers for the write up sameer.
Sounds like fun, and a great opportunity to learn. And it doesn't sound as if a high-performance car is strictly necessary.
I might keep a look outt for similar events happening over this side of the pond that might be able to try over summer :good:
Thanks for the pics, too, Oscar. And congrats on your first (?) tracking experience with your STi (lucky SOB). It sounds like you did well 8)
^^ There was a guy there with a late 1990s Jaguar Van Den Plas, another with a lat 90's BMW 740i and even a chap in a Dodge Dakota long-bed pickup truck - so you really don't need a hi-po car to have fun. But it helps :P

nice write up samerr.
thenumber1- yes it is my first track experience, its my first anything experience! i mean com on it barelly has 1200 miles.. :) , thanks.
and as RC said you will have fun on matter what car u have, a guy even took a honda pilot, just to play around though...
oh and i forgot to mention that on my way there i got hit by a rock in my windsheld (barelly noticable) and on the way back a bird hit me, yes a bird! it was floppin around and it just came across me and hit me in the right side of the windshield, it jus t left some feathers there... not too bad... just my luck..., specially with my tires, they have som weird cuts on the sides, i found some more today when i cheked them out... and that suks because my parents bave been askin me about it, like was i goin fast.. and what exacfly we were doing? and things like that... :s
Rocks, birds and tyre scratches - all part of road hazards.
Simple ecplanation - when you drive around cones you stress your tyres more than street driving - often the tyre sidwall may make momentary contact with the road surface - this can happen even when making rapid transitions at 15 mph.
Let your dad know the maximum speeds reached yesterday were about 38mph - and that you were taking tunrs at abou 20mph.
Seems it may be time for us to get your father out and exposed the world a little - he may yet regret selling the Porsche afterall.

oscar, this is where tire pressures really make a difference. The last autocross i participated in, i had my front tires set at about 40psi. the lancers were setting their rears at about 38 and fronts at 36 IIRC. Next time you do this, mark the shoulders of your tires with dabs of paint and after each run observe where the paint is rubbing off at. If the paint remains on the sidewall, you need more air. If the paint remains on the tread, take air out. You want it right on the shoulder where the sidewall meets the tread. This should prevent the cuts you are talking about.
But definetly take RC's advise and bring your dad to the next event. I am sure he'll have a blast.
Here you go:
I think from now on, anytime there is a JW crew get together, we should have abanner created, and a thread (such as this one) the a special section for Already held JW crew events (not for planning - but simply recording the actual event).
Then the "official baner gets stored there, along qith the event thread - maybe a sticky with the Banners being hotlinks to invidual threads.
Perhaps as folks attend more and more events we can have "thumbnail" banners so you can collect a whole bunch in your signature.
Of course, you only get to show a banner if you attend ;) - and for it to be a "JW event" should we say at least2, or even perhaps 3 JW members need to attend?
The First Banner

nice idea RC!
Obviously similar things are on local(ised) forums (where meets occur more frequently), but i like the banner idea a lot :good:
and thanks for the advice guys! Todays TG made me really wanna get my ass doing some advanced driving 8)

the only problem i see with that is after 4 or 5 get togethers, the banner collection is going to be pretty big
the only problem i see with that is after 4 or 5 get togethers, the banner collection is going to be pretty big
But thats the idea ;)
Enough of the bickering and infighting and bullshit that nhas become the norm lately on JW... Jabba sent me in to clean the messup and short of actually having people "rubbed out" via various contacts we have, I think this is the next best thing - encourage local JW member interaction, then share the results with the rest of the global memberships ;)
Don't worry - there is going to be a banner that is retrofittable and will be grandfathered in to include the JW Fun Run :P heheh ;)
So you get to sport a Banner too :P
For muti-event attendees perhaps smalley bannerettes will work in the signatures :)

yea RC thats a great idea!, so this means more meets and so... thats cool with me :)
and about the tire thing if its normal then i dont care, because it is not very noticable, and if it doesnt hurt the tire it doesnt hurt me.
and ZfrkS62, i put 40 all around, i asked this guy with a Evo MR and he did the same thing, so i figured its good there, ill try different things next times.
And yea I probably am going to take my dad next time i want to go, he will probably suk driving though, because ive never seen him drive hard... but he will have fun.
But yea RC good idea! and thats picture is cool where are the rest? we want to see them! :)
*if size is a problem then mayb small ones will do the trick, or what type of banners are you talkin about? lke the one u have in ur sig right now?

well, it seems that lower weight + more hp + flatter turning does help in the skidpad department :)
that said, Sameer does seem to be going well ;)
a note for future skidpad tests:
set up the tripod + video to see the whole skidpad, and have no camera movements needed (since the action is in plain view)
what were the numbers? just doing more laps doesn't make you the winner.

Uhm - higher speed - higher G number - more laps in the same time - I guess if that doesn't make a winner then a snappy interior must be the ticket to the checkered flag after all. :)

Are we really gonna have another Houston get together sometime soon? If so, when is it gonna take place?
Uhm - we just had one this last weekend? :P
Also, does anyone know how many people on JW live in or around the Houston area? If we had 5-10 guys get together, that would be awesome. What is the biggest JW meet up so far?
Doesn't matter really - cause only 4 have ever shown up :P (including me, sameer, oscar and agentorange.. :P)

Thats a stock suspension Z06 buddy :P - I have 480bhp instead of the orginal 385bhp (and 2002 newe 405bhp) - but the bouncy bits are all stock street Z06 - infact my springs are 70,000 miles old - shocks are about 20,000 miles old.
Maybe now folks will believe us when we say it is a F360CS/P911GT3 equal - in the right hands - witnessed by John Heinrichy's 7m56s lap of the Nurburgring - the same time as the 996 GT3 ;)
