The most glamourous race on the calendar. Perhaps the best of circuits to watch qualifying and onboard shots. But perhaps the most boring race on the calendar due to limited overtaking opportunities. Last year, we saw Kimi take an easy win and a great overtaking manouevre by Nick Heidfeld on Alonso.

This year qualifying will be exciting particularly in the first two sessions with a lot of cars fighting to get a clean lap. I am sure some big names might stumble. Hopefully, Michael will equal Senna's record of 6 wins this year. Its been too long since his last win. The Renaults look really strong though.

Driver quotes as of Thursday: http://www.formula1.com/race/news/4417/757.html
The top drivers:

Michael Schumacher, Ferrari (15th, +1.696s):
“Obviously, we cannot be too happy with what we have seen so far, although the results can be partly explained by the fact we used just one set of tyres, unlike many of the other drivers. But I’m not trying to hide the fact that the situation is not looking that good. At the moment we are too slow and we have to study the data to find out why. There is work to do, but we have enough experience to get out of this situation. The new race suit? It’s just for fun, an idea that came to me at the Madonna di Campiglio event this winter. It brings a bit more colour!”

Fernando Alonso, Renault (4th, +0.314s):
“Thursday in Monaco is always a day more for the drivers than the engineers, as we run a lot to get used to the circuit again and feel comfortable. I did a lot of laps, worked on my lines in the corners, and I managed to find a good rhythm by the end of the second session. The balance of the R26 was good straight away this morning, and it got better as the grip levels improved. I think we have done the job we needed to today, and we are in good shape.”

Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren (6th, +0.800s):
"A bit of excitement for me at the end of the first practice. I went out with less than one minute to go to complete an installation lap and a practice start. However there was a small fire which caused some damage – a bit more than necessary as the Fire Marshals were hesitant until I took the fire extinguisher myself. The team did a great job in making the necessary repairs and I was able to get some running in half way through the second session. I'm pleased with what we have achieved so far and we look competitive, but there is still along way to go."

Jenson Button, Honda (9th, +0.996s):
"It's been tough all day today and the lap time hasn't been there. On the last run we changed the set-up and it seemed to improve the car quite a bit. What you need at this circuit is confidence and I'm getting more and more confident with the set-up of the car here. We still need to work on our competitiveness for qualifying because we are not there yet."

Juan Pablo Montoya, McLaren (3rd, +0.231s):
"A good start to the weekend for us. We seem to be quite competitive and have definitely made progress but its still early days and this is Monaco after all where anything can happen. I completed the planned programme, and the new parts we have introduced seem to have made a difference. The Michelin tyres are working well, so overall we are looking good. I love this track as it's such a challenge and I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the weekend."

Qualifying was exciting to watch!!!

Great lap by Michael to take pole. It was clear to me that his "brake failure" was delibrate. A driver of Michael's calibre doesnt make such mistakes. His speed wasn't that fast into the corner anyway to cause him to go wide. His voice in the post race interview was a clear giveaway. He was visibly nervous and voice sounded a bit strangled. Hopefully a pissed off Alonso will not try to nerf him off into Ste. Devote on Lap 1. Hopefully there are no penalties.... AFAIK both Alonso and Schumi are on similar fuel strategies - so it might be a good dice tomorrow. Idiot Massa - he killed it on his out lap

Excellent job by Mark Webber and Trulli. Mark Webber is an invisible man for some reason - you rarely get to see him on TV coverage. Looks like the Hondas are really suffering here.

I think the tires would be really suffering with 45 degree C track temps. The engines would have it okay as the air temps are 24 degrees only.

Controversial pole for Schumacher

27 May 2006

Michael Schumacher took pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix, while his Ferrari was stationary at the Rascasse corner.

The former champion appeared to have out-fumbled himself going into the corner immediately after setting the fastest time of 1m 13.898s in the final session of qualifying. He understeered wide and just managed to miss the outer wall before coming to a halt. The presence of the Ferrari meant that nobody else could maximise their speed through the yellow flag area, so his fastest time remained unbeatable. Fernando Alonso did manage to improve in his Renault, to 1m 13.962s, but it was not quite enough.

“I had just a touch too much speed coming into Rascasse, and couldn’t make it round,” Schumacher said after taking his best qualifying position here since 2000. “I checked with the guys where did we end up and they said P1. I couldn’t believe it!”

Initially he kept the engine running, but then it stalled and he had to be pushed away by marshals. That did not sit well with Alonso, who was clearly not happy, having set the fastest first sector time at the beginning of his spoiled lap. “We should have been on pole,” the champion said. “The previous lap I had been three-tenths faster in the last corner, so for sure we could have been on pole. I did my maximum with the car and today was okay, the car was performing really well and we have a fantastic tyre for race performance, but after dominating all weekend, to lose pole on the last lap through somebody else’s accident is not a good moment.”

Mark Webber put in his best qualifying performance of the season for Williams to take third on the grid in 1m 14.082s, but also lost out through Schumacher’s error. Kimi Raikkonen was fourth on 1m 14.140s for McLaren, with Renault’s Giancarlo Fisichella (1m 14.396s) and Juan Pablo Montoya (1m 14.664s) in the second McLaren sharing the third row.

Currently, however, the stewards are to review ‘incidents’ involving cars 2, 5 and 14 - Fisichella, Schumacher and Red Bull’s David Coulthard - so these positions remain provisional.

Rubens Barrichello was Honda’s only survivor from the second session after Jenson Button twice aborted what seemed to be laps fast enough to have left him in the vital top 10. The Brazilian lapped in 1m 15.804s for seventh in the final session, chased by Toyota’s Jarno Trulli on 1m 15.857s, Coulthard on 1m 16.426s and Williams’ Nico Rosberg, who spoiled a good lap and lost out at the end. He had to be satisfied with 1m 16.636s.

Earlier on the second session had weeded out Toyota’s Ralf Schumacher (1m 14.398s), Red Bull’s Christian Klien (1m 14.747s), Toro Rosso’s Tonio Liuzzi (1m 14.969s) and Button, who didn’t better 1m 14.982s. Neither of the BMW Saubers got through, either. Jacques Villeneuve was 15th on 1m 15.052s, while Nick Heidfeld was 16th after stopping in Turn 8 with a mechanical problem before he could improve on 1m 15.137s.

The two Midlands will be next on the grid. Christijan Albers and Tiago Monteiro lapped in 1m 15.598s and 1m 15.993s respectively, and were the fastest runners not to make it through from the first session. Scott Speed looked good for much of it, running just ahead of Liuzzi, but didn’t go fast when it mattered and had to be content with 1m 16.236s for 19th.

The two Super Aguris were 20th and 21st, Takuma Sato recording 1m 16.276s and Franck Montagny 1m 17.502s.

While one Ferrari was at the front, the other was at the back. On his first flying lap Felipe Massa got out of shape on the right-hand section of Casino Square and drilled into the opposite tyre wall. The Brazilian was unhurt, but the front end of his 248 F1 looked less healthy.

If the grid remains the same, depending on the results of the stewards’ deliberations, the prospects remain for a gripping start to Sunday’s race.

The thought that michael did that delibarately did come to mind. I can't see how sato can keep his super aguri on the road and michael an 7 times world champion, also a 5 time monaco winner can't keep one of the best cars on the grid on the road at 40mph. Just seems wierd.

whatta hell do u mean by meant to park the car...he said the engine stalled...don't listen to all that bs by Flavio...he was an idiot for pitting both Renaults with 2 min left...and now Fisi is gonna pay for blocking DC...

plus u r all judging this incident on whether or not MS benefited from the f-up...if he gained something than its 'obvious' it was intentional...if he didn't benefit, like say Massa (what if he did that in the last qualy), than it was legit...

He did gain something from it, he safeguarded his pole position. And it is not renault fault for pitting that late, alonso could seriously without doubt taken pole.

^^^ Like i said he's done fishy things in the past to gain advantages, damon hill, jacques villeneuve, so i think he is really coy and as my friend always tells me if you cheat and get away with it then it aint cheating. But in hindsight it is cheating.

05-27-2006, 02:28 PM
No i am no basing my verdict, i am just trying to say that michael will at times, may be not all the time, but sometimes will try to do things that will upset the competition. I understand that he may not have cheated but i respect ferrari, only for their fantastic road cars. However, when situations like these arise really loses more respect for me, especially after austria 2002, which lost a huge chunk of respect.

Thanks for the video. Looking at it I think clearly shows he meant to park the car there. Still it doesn't make sense why would he do such thing?

Im sorry but you guys are full of it.

He was coming in hot and locked the wheels, when the wheels get that hot thats what happens. You just slide off. He "unwound" the wheel to let the tires roll naturaly and cool off and then put lock again, full lock at that. Its STANDART PROCEDURE.

He had no grip, he "undwound" the wheel and put full lock again and the turning radius was still not there.....its an F1 car. not a Volvo that you can do a u turn in around a one way street.

Read my post again genious.

Its standart bloody procedere.

You go in with locked wheels, if you keep the lock on youll just keep sliding and overheating the tires.

You straighten out the wheel to cool the tires and get them rolling again. Then you apply lock again.

And he was controlling UNDERSTEER, not oversteer.

Any other questions?

Schumacher sent to back of grid
Saturday, 27, May, 2006, 23:42

Michael Schumacher has been sent to the back of the grid for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The sensational ruling came at 10.45 on Saturday evening following eight hours of deliberations by FIA-appointed stewards, who found Schumacher guilty of deliberately bringing his Ferrari to a stop in the dying minutes of qualifying.

The German’s actions instantly provoked a furore in the paddock, with rival teams and drivers alleging that they were designed to disrupt competitors’ final flying laps and prevent his own pace-setting time from being bettered.

After analysing video evidence, data traces supplied by Ferrari and testimonials from key members of the Italian squad, the stewards agreed that Schumacher’s actions were intentional.

They therefore deleted all of Schumacher’s qualifying times, relegating him to 22nd and last place on the grid.

The decision promotes world championship leader Fernando Alonso to pole position ahead of Williams driver Mark Webber.

With Giancarlo Fisichella having already been penalised for impeding David Coulthard's progress during qualifying, the second row will now be filled by McLaren duo Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya.

The stewards issued the following statement explaining their verdict:

“Having set a fast time in sector one, the driver lost time in sector two, arrived at turn 18 [Rascasse] at a speed little if any different from his previous fastest lap, and braked with such force that his front wheels locked up, requiring the driver to regain control of the car.

“The driver ultimately did so without hitting the barrier on the outside of turn 18.

“The engine of the car subsequently stalled, with the result that the car partially blocked the track.

“Having compared all relevant data, the stewards can find no justifiable reason for the driver to have braked with such undue, excessive and unusual pressure at this part of the circuit, and are therefore left with no alternative but to conclude that the driver deliberately stopped his car on the circuit in the last few minutes of qualifying, at a time at which he had thus far set the fastest lap time.

“The stewards accordingly directed that the qualifying times of Michael Schumacher be deleted.

“The effect of this is that he will start from the back of the grid.”

The stewards said Schumacher’s actions breached Article 112 of F1’s sporting regulations and that therefore their ruling was final and would not be subject to appeal.

"Article 112 enables the stewards to delete any number of a driver's qualifying times for a driving infringement, which decision is not susceptible to appeal," they said.

Schumacher will share the final row of the grid with Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa, who crashed out of the first knockout qualifying session.

Since the stewards have full access to all the teams telemetry data, why did the assholes take so long to announce their decision???? only one thing comes to my mind:
that the guys are afraid of Ferrari re-establishing their reign over F1, which is obviously bad for the no. of spectators, hence their pockets so must be kept away from a powerful winning streak at all costs.

what-fucking-ever

Did you read the bloody report?

"no reason to brake so hard", "he was down .2 sec".......

Who the fuck are they to say how hard to brake, or whats the proper amount of brake pressure at a given turn? This is bloody rediculous

Bottom bloody line is that he locked up, and tried to get out of the corner and his engine stalled.

bottom line. Period.

This report they wrote up is simply stupid.

Ferrari should have just withdrew from the race, but no. Schu started from pit, got the fastest lap and finished 5th....to prove all the babies that he is still the best thing the F1 scene will ever see.

Since when "felt" meant anything?

They should "know"

Because logic tells he "locked up, and stalled the engine" (driving error)

Feel says "he purposely locked up, flat spotted his tires, risked hitting the armco, risked getting a penalty, so he can fuck up the qual for others...and and he purposely took the key out of the ignition and put on the aircon stalling the engine".

Alonso, did it again. 64 out of 70 so far, if he stays this consistant finishing second to michael all the time then he will still be 1 point ahead of schumi in the final race.

I ask, why the hell did he crash out in so many races then?

I ask, you have another lap on even less fuel, why wouldn't you push hard when its obvious that alonso is on the charge.

any time the tire is locked up, you CANNOT steer.

notice, he had full lock and was oversteering. teh front brake locked up, and he went straight.... DUH ;) he barely made it out w/out crashing into the wall.

the officials are fucked, many of you are completely wrong in your opinions... I'm just totally confused at how you, the media, and the stewards came to such a conclusion. Utter BULLSHIT.

at least Juan Pablo backed him up, and we all know of "bad blood" between them.

we all knew with this quali format, something like this could happen; then to penalize for it... BULLSHIT.

impressive to come back to 5th still.... should've been 4th, or even 3rd if his in/out laps for his pitstop were 2 tenths better altogether...

Whether or not Schumi did it deliberately or not, he showed that he deserved victory by passing 3/4 of the field, and by setting the fastest time on completely worn out tyres. Thats all that matters. In fact, not only did he deserve victory, he would have won had the stewards not done what they did.

And whoever believes that MS is a cheater, I'd suggest you look at the antics of Senna. All great champions have controversial moments in their careers. And lets not forget about MS's 7 world championships. A driver of his magnitude doesn't deserve degrading treatment like the one he received these past couple of days. 99.9% of the people accusing him are only envious of his accomplishments, and it really sickens me when I hear some chicken-shit drivers like Villeneuve making comments about a driver who is at least 7 times better than he is.

Its at times like this that one truly realizes who is a friend or a pretender. Unfortunately for Schumi, it looks like he's on his own. I hope he puts all those SOBs that doubt him in their rightful place: his rear view mirror.

I can't wait for the next round so that everybody can be reminded of why hes a 7 time world champion, and the holder of every other conceivable record imaginable. I wouldn't expect anything less of the greatest driver ever to have blessed motorsports. Let the schooling begin....

What Schumacher has done was impressive (in the race that is) but it's not something uniquely for him. Raikonnen has been doing the same last year. But that's besides the point.

Point is, nobody is attacking Schumacher on its merits (he remains to be one of the best drivers ever) but that doesn't mean he doesn't make mistakes or cheats. And that certainly doesn't mean that the rules don't apply to him.

And yes, Villeneuve is an ass.

Of course the rules apply to everybody, and of course drivers make mistakes. Thats what MS did

My point was that people cannot treat a driver of Michael's callibre with such disrespect. You don't go around calling people "cheaters" and "embarrassments" in public, and much less people that have accomplished as much as MS.

falling off during the final lap of qualifying is one thing......and i agree that the punishment was a bit stiff, especially since this is a situation which has no real evidence aside from analysis within the cockpit....

however, a lock up consists of the wheel not changing direction relative to the steering wheel under hard braking and or heavy understeer or the wheel not spinning forward....in that situation with Schumi yesterday, if you watch the steering wheel, he has full control of the wheel at every moment. there isn't one moment in that video clip where the wheel doesn't turn where he wants it to OR where the wheel is locked into not spinning forward. there is physics involved in the car....but not in this situation, IMO ;)

the thing is that we're just judging by a video, in the end hes the expert and the one whos feeling the car and what may have happened. Its not that if he had gone long he would just have ended off track, he would have crashed and obviously he couldn't afford to do that. Also he didn't need to block Alonsos fast lap, its not even mid championship and he isn't a long way from Alonso. Why risk a second place for a last ?

I find it funny that everyone thinks Schuey is dumb enough to do something like that. Look at the times hes had the better strategy (and made a dick out of Renault) during the season and then think to yourself. Schuey knew his race pace, knew he'd be qualifying in the top 3 if not first, but he throws it all away on a rookie move? Cmon you cant believe that. As bad as some people think he is, Schuey is smarter than to throw away a race just to get a 'little' advantage when he would have destroyed Alonso in the race.

In fact, Webber and Raikkonen would have done it if they didnt have mechanical trouble. Sub-par effort by Alonso, Fisi out-drove him.

First of all, it wasn't his strategy (more of his team's). And obviously it worked. It's not like Fisi wouldn't do the same thing if he were leading. Alonso didn't do anything because he didn't need to. A needless demonstration of his talent, if he has any, might have caused him to make silly mistakes. I like Fisi. But he's been plagued with bad luck too many times.

Raikkonen did what Alonso did last year, although his McLaren was considerably faster than the others'. I wouldn't say his victory was sub-par effort.

Schumachers move was cheap but remember who this is , this is Schumacher one of the greats -winning at all costs and push the rules to the limit to do that. We've seen him take out ppl on track for results and dirty tactics many a times AS we have seen Senna do. It is a dirty trick, but a drity trick caused by his passion to win.

As for Fisi, diving up the inside of DC, double shuffling Villenueve superb driving shame about the traffic. Alonso takes it on a plate again...the story of his career so far? maybe not but he is a very lucky driver. I Highly highly rate him, but not in the league of Schumacher yet. Monaco steward says decision 'painful'

One of the race stewards at the centre of the Michael Schumacher qualifying controversy in Monaco has admitted that it was a 'painful decision' to punish the seven-time world champion, but claimed there was no choice after finding out that Schumacher had lost control of his car at just 16km/h.

Joaquin Verdegay, who is vice-president of the Spanish motorsport federation and one of the three stewards on duty last weekend, has revealed that all the evidence pointed towards Schumacher having acted deliberately in stopping his car.

He claims that the speed at which Schumacher went off, allied to the sequence of events that led to the car stalling, all pointed to the fact that the Ferrari driver had tried to deliberately block his rivals by leaving his car on the track.

"It was a painful decision because we could not make a mistake and put the reputation of a driver at risk," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"We don't know if the entire manoeuvre was deliberate, but in that spot he had certainly not done anything like it throughout the weekend: he braked over 50% more heavily than on the other laps.

"Then he performed some absolutely unnecessary and pathetic counter-steering, and that lasted five metres, until there was no more chances of going through the turn normally.

"He lost control of the car while travelling at 16km/h! That's something completely unjustifiable. And the engine shut off because he wanted it to, by losing enough time before hitting the clutch. And the excuse that he did not engage reverse because there was traffic doesn't make sense."

Verdegay added that if Schumacher had actually hit the barriers then the stewards would probably have given him the benefit of the doubt that the entire incident was accidental.

"If he had damaged the car we would have probably filed the matter as an error. As it is, to 'park' it that way, you only do it deliberately," he added.

"We've only applied article 116 of the sporting regulations: if a driver affects the results of other drivers by committing an error, you can cancel all his lap times."

Tony Scott Andrews (GB) and Christian Calmas (F) were the other two stewards..

Reminds me of Senna, Prost - and Ballestre (FIA President - and french) back in 1989 :P

well, a different situation, but not so different outcome in some ways.

i dont know about you, but when you are going 0 mph at the end of a curve, and reverse comes into play... that can result in some serious injury.

that seems to be what it came down to to the stewards, the fact that MS didn't feel safe enough to reverse...

by the guy coming out, it seems like he regrets his decision now that he is free from pressure...

Yes, let's have some benchracers decide what actually happened and leave the opinion of experts out of there.

Anyway, interesting read:

Ouch...
Finally, someone asks today's $64,000 question; "How do you explain that there was nobody out there saying 'I don't think Michael did it deliberately'"

well, even in 97 when MS was disqualified; he said something to the nature of 'thats what happens in racing'

you don't get to F1 by being mediocre. (unless you are Yuji Ide) you know, his qualifying pace may leave something to be desired, but his race pace is pretty good.

Manaco 17-14
Spain 17-12
Nurburgring 17-8
San Marino 17-12
Austrailia 17-6
Malaysia 17-7
Bahrain 17 retired

and of course, Manaco, and spain, and San Marino are very hard to pass at.

he is consistantly slow in quali, but god, look at how much he improves during the race most races!

I know its a bit late, but I missed quali and only now saw the vid of the schumi event.

The link earlier in this post only shows schumi but another one shows an onboard shot from Alonso, so its possible to compare the lines and speeds.

I watched this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzkvfG13vT0&search=schumacher%20monaco

I spent some time watching the onboards of Schumacher and Alonso.
Up to a point just before turning Schumacher's and Alonso's cars where on the same line to the corner, so talk about him taking too tight a line is BS.
To me it seems as if Schumacher just turned in a fraction to early, made a reflexive correction to the left and then skid when trying to go around the corner.
I can see it as an accident. I've done similar things myself in the Porsche (Not comparing myself to MS, just stating that that specific sequence happens.).

I think what several people may forget is that an F1 car has zero grip when its going slow. So locking up in that slow corner with no downforce is not that strange.
That initial corrective jerk to the left compromised the corner entry angle, so its quite probable that he could not turn sharp enough afterwards to make the corner.
F1 cars do not have tight turning circles and his left fron wheel really seems up to the barrier at full lock to me. Lightly, yes, but still touching.
Also to me it seems as if he is really trying to engage reverse to get out.
He can't see back around the corner, so concerns about traffic and the danger to reverse seem very justified to me.

At the speed around Monaco that whole corner takes a second only.
So I'd like to see anyone try correct an unexpected situation like that in a 3rd of a second.
Really, the only question is why the early turn in. And there are a few possible explanations for that.
According to the telemetry he braked harder there than earlier. So a possible explanation is that he was going faster than before initially, prompting desperate push of the brakes and then slower after the brake, prompting the early turn-in.

Furthermore it wasn't that long until Alonso arrived at the scene. 20sec only.
Even if MS had engaged reverse, he would have been directly in Alonso's way had he reversed.

In the end my opinion as that this was a witch hunt, in my mind confirmed by Flav's sudden magnanimous treatment of MS now that Alonso has won.

I think we have beaten the Schumacher topic to death :)

To distract you guys , take a look at these two awesome clips of Schumacher getting pole in 1996 in the beautiful F310. It was an Ayrton Senna like drive to get the truck like Ferrari to beat the dominant Williams and Benettons in qualifying. I must say that the 1996 car was undoubtedly slow but it was heck of a lot prettier than all the Ferraris that came after it.

Dude, so flawless. What the hell happened?

True, he smoked the majority of the field last weekend to come up 17 places in one of the most impossible tracks to pass, which can only make you wonder why he would do something so foolish as to throw away a perfectly good pole worthy lap the way he did. He was absolutely screaming hrough the field and probably would have blown Alonso out of the water :?
