Ouch.. can't put it down to just having an external drive right? I've used some external firewire ones on a mac and they were pretty reliable from my usage. Anyways, hope you fill it up quickly.. heh

Are you sure you should just immediately give up on it? If it has really important stuff on it send it to a data recovery place and they will dump everything off it for you. Also, what kind of a problem results in HD not working but a HD that will work after formatting?! I wouldn't rush in just yet.

If the drive is really bad a reformat will not fix it. In my line of work I have had at least one drive fail from every maker there is out there. If it hasent happend to you yet then it will at some point.

If that doesn't work, can always try low level format.

Data recovery = HUGE $$. We're talking several G's here, fellas. Probably not worth it if all you had was downloaded movies.

FWIW, stay CLEAR of all MAXTOR drives-- I have had 3 crash in the past year. Sure their customer service is good (they send you a new drive) but it doesn't help your data loss!
Western Digital has my vote of confidence from here on out...

Well Sachmo,

I certainly hope that I'll never land myself in such a situation. I don't care bout the vids as all the other stuff like documents is much more important
Might sound pretty obvious but rule # 01 still is: always make periodical back-ups.
CD writers and writable CDRoms won't cost you an arm and a leg these days, at least not in Western Europe
But than again everybody always think: Why should I do that, my HD will never crash .. Untill you learn the hard way

Only if the phyical surface of the drive is undamaged and the read heads are acutally operating will you be able to use a software based recovery method. If there is physical hardware reasons for it failing then the only way to recover the data is by a company like drivesavers.

Of course you could take the platters out of the drive and swap them with the platters of a working drive.

Yup...give your Maxtor a couple years--you'll see what we're talking about. Hopefully, you won't, as statistically you should be fine, but stay on top of those backups!!
