View Full Version : A sticky question F40 vs 275GTB/4

On another point.
My friend is seriously considering selling the 275GTB/4 and buying an F40.
His reason:
He has had the 275 for 25 years.
He has driven the F40 and say that it is amazing. He can't afford to just buy one and selling the Daytona is not enough money.

Furthermore he'd like to enjoy the F40's performance before he is too old to really enjoy it.

So I am creating a poll. What do you think?
Should he sell the 275 for the F40, or wait 10years to possibly buy the F40?
He does not really want to sell the daytona. My thoughts are that if he wants the F40 that badly, he could sell both 275 and daytona to buy an F40 and a concourse, plexiglass daytona...

Maybe it's time to change ? but he will certainly regret the 275 GTB which must be more usable than the F40 ...

Well there are a few arguments.
Thing is he uses the Daytona to drive around usually, the 275 for special occasions.
So the F40 would replace the role of the 275.

Also another point is that the 275 is now worth around $650 000 and will probably reach $1 million within 10 years.
The F40 will likely reach maybe $500 000 in 10 years.
So the 275, once sold is irreplacable from that point of view.

If it was me I'd sell off the daytona.
Also we are in South Africa - where they have banned LHD imports. There are only 5 F40s here and they rarely come up for sale. Maybe 3 of them are in impeccable condition, of which 1 may come up for sale at the right offer. Because they are so rare, the prices are severely inflated. The last sale in the past 2 months was for $500 000!!
I also know of 1 RHD F40 for sale in the UK - former Sultan of Brunei. Still enquiring about its price.

like i said if it was me I agree with you.. sell of the Daytona..
nothing on this world imo comes even close to the 275..
and like you said the 275 is irreplaceable.. ;)
yet you say he uses the Daytona to drive around usually.. :? so thats some conundrum..

i say sell the Daytona, get the F40, and maybe some 360\430 ;)

lol. He doees not have THAT much money. 8).
I think his perfect solution would be F40, 275 and daytona comp.

But thats way too much money.
Another issue is that I indeed sourced a right hand drive F40 (1 of 7 built) and the price is right, but the bloody insane South African import law prohibits import.
$850 000 for an F40 is a bit insane. 8(

the 275 GTB/4 is my favorite styled car of all time; and will never get old, but when its a case of wanting to enjoy a car before you are too old, and you aren't Jackey Stewart... i voted for the F40.

being there are only 5 in SA, i would offer that the F40 may actually hold its value quite well; if not appreciate in value.

who knows, mabey his business will do well, and he can later buy the 275 back in 10 years time...

of course, i'd love to see some pictures of both

best of luck to your friend!

He has driven F40 and F50. He said the F40 is by far the more exciting car to drive.
He used to be a racing driver in local touring cars.

We discussed F40 GTE as a purpose built track car, but its a hard choice. A racing car has very high maintenance.
For instance a 333SP is roughly the same value as the 275 , but racing it would rack up considerable cost.
The F40 would be for precisely what it is made for - that occasional blinding blast down a few roads and the occasional track.
In another thread I also mentioned he used to own a 288GTO which he sold in the 1989 boom. He said although the 288 is an amazing drive, he wants the rawness of the f40.

I can understand his situation, but personally my heart will always be with the 275.

Well he already has a lifetimes memory with the 275 so apart from sentimental value and potential appreciation there is nothing to gain by keeping it any longer.

I would buy the F40 as it is a quintessential Ferrari and perhap's the ultimate driver's Ferrari. I remember you mentioning that your friend took out his cars to the racetrack for trackdays and such. Well the F40 would be a perfect fit here.

Besides the Daytona will provide him enough memories of the Ferrari of old ... so it is sell the 275 and buy the F40 as far as I am concerned

F40 for me in this situation since he's already had the 275 for so long, life is too short to spend in the same car IMO. :D

I also know of 1 RHD F40 for sale in the UK - former Sultan of Brunei. Still enquiring about its price.

Yep, a friend of mine is/was looking at this car too....would be interesting to know if you are told the same price as he was. ;)

I was quoted "about R3 million", which roughly translates into $480 000 or 280 000 pounds.

Which seems very reasonable. Its about $80 000 or 60 000pounds more than going rate for a concourse example. So I think the price is great fo a fairly unique F40 as the Sultan is not known for selling his cars.

Also the car has been restored. Apparently the original spec was very tasteless, so I am still finding out what the original spec was. I would assume it came in rather garish colours most likely.

Frankie Taylor is rumoured to have paid about R3 million for his F40 around 1990 - I will dig up some pics - I can't remember if it was a LHD or RHD... the car was in Somerset West - has that car since been sold or exported to comply with new RHD requirements?

I think Taylor's car is still his, but up for sale to an offer.
If it is the one I am thinking of it has had an LM kit fitted to it.

The latest one was bought by Franz Pretorius (new I think) and sold to Brett or Guy Kebble along with his F50 for R8.5 million. R5.5 mill for the F50 and R3mill for the f40 about 2 years ago.
Then the F40 was sold to Willie Hepburn end last year for possibly R3.1 million and in the last 2 months to Lollie Jackson, the Teazers nightclub owner for R3.3 million.
Because its Mr. Jackson that owns 2 or 3 (more?) new Lamborghinis we think the F40 is more a statement than a passion, so expect it to be up for sale before too long. Or rather - we hope it will be!

With the new laws it is still possible to import a LHD car, but it is seriously difficult and involves official recognition as a rare collectible. So the F40 should fall in this category.
