Is Mercedes gearing up for a retro throwback of its own? The latest issue of Germany’s AutoBild magazine features a cover story on an exciting new project reportedly underway at Mercedes — the spiritual revival of the legendary 300SL Gullwing coupe. So far, we’ve only got a scan from the cover of the magazine, and details remain scarce. As with all future product renderings — even from reliable sources — the final design of such products often varies a lot from initial artists’ sketches. Perhaps more important than the image itself, however, is the idea that Mercedes is planning to revive the Gullwing design. From this single image, it appears that the vehicle could slot somewhere between the SLK and the SL/CL models. We’ll update you when more information becomes available.

It would be nice if Mercedes finalizes the plans and makes the "modern" 300SL

I don´t think it´s a good idea...I´m sure Mercedes will fuck it up.
Why won´t manufacturers leave old legends rest in peace, why is it so hard to come up with new ideas, build new legends intstead of looking back to old ones.
The 300SL Gullwing is an iconic car that marked an era in supercars, I am sure that if they build it it will ruin the name, and if it looks remotley like that impression then they have already fucked it up from now...
Now I have a question, I have no idea on this, but wasn´t the gullwing a top range merc (behind the 300SLR) back at it´s time? and this is supposed to be slotted between the SLK and the SL ?

It looks cool, but two things i think it will have for sure:
1. an automatic gearbox
and probably 2. V8 supercharged engine
Mercedes nowdays is not fully performance oriented, more of an luxsury

I agree with your comment pehtren, but I on the other hand see nothing wrong with being more luxury oriented while having performance. It's just personal taste's that's all. Anyways, this is one "retro" car I would not mind being produced!

Interesting project, If i were the merc boss I'd make this a light sportscar with a 6.3 V8 and get rid of the gizmos been a long time since we've seen a merc without them. If this thing wieghs anything over 1400KG it will never work.

I really hope they ditch this project. The Gullwing is one of the most extraordinary and characteristic machines ever produced, I'm sure that wahtever Mercedes will come up with will not do the original car justice. I just can't see that shape and styling cues implemented into a modern car.
a new 300SL would be PERFECT if all the luxury you'll get with it will be A\C and a radio, (well leather too but thats it..) and they should make a manual an option at least..
just my 2 cents...

New info from LeftLaneNews.com
Last week, we published a full-size scan from the cover of a recent issue of Germany’s AutoBild magazine showing an artist’s rendering of a rumored remake of the classic Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing.’ We’ve since had the chance to look at the accompanying article, and a few more details are available. According to the report, the 2010 model is expected to offer 750 horsepower via a 6.3-liter bi-turbo V8. The entire project is said to be under the direction of the automaker’s AMG group.
The car will have a front-mid-engine layout with 50:50 weight distribution, according to the report. Mercedes is not decided on what type of body construction to use, but the emphasis will be on light weight. So far, there’s no word on specific performance numbers, dimensions, or prices, but “there is a clear vision,” the magazine said.
The Leftlane Perspective: Could this be another collaboration between Mercedes and McLaren? In January, McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh said another road car could be in the works. “The level of interest in McLaren from Mercedes-Benz is higher than it has ever been,” Whitmarsh said. “There is a clear commitment to be in F1 in the long term and refreshed interest in road car activities. I think it is increasingly likely that there will be a range of sportscars designed in Woking in the future.”
One possibility to consider is that this model could be a replacement for the Mercedes SLR coupe, which is expected to give up the spotlight to the SLR roadster next year. According to Auto Motor und Sport SLR roadster sales are expected to exceed coupe sales. If SLR roadster has a folding hardtop like it’s SL- and SLK-Class siblings, it could theoretically replace the SLR coupe entirely.
Such a move would create space for a new supercar coupe, such as this proposed Gullwing model.
