Tooning is just about the only thing I can actually do in photoshop............but I love doing it! I started about a month ago, here are some of my toons. The Ferrari F40 was my first ever toon btw.....hope you like em! :D

how is it possible to draw freehand in PS? I can never figure it out :?

Daggernite
05-04-2006, 09:36 PM
well you can get one of the pen things? tablets there called I think. OR you can trace an actually image of the car and paint it giving it the toon look.

There is a tool you can use that makes lines and you can bend them a little to make them look smooth circles. MUCH more precise then hand. You draw those lines and select STROKE PATH and thats it.

Making some progress, this will probably be the last update for tonight.

Manik those are awesome, please make some more...!

this can also be done with a technique thatīs called "cell shading" which letīs you create cartoon like images from photos...

Good stuff, you should post a tutorial so we can know all of your secrets ;)

keep up the good work..

Great work, Manik890. Since you said you are using PS, I am going to assume you are using the pen tool? I would recommend using Illustrator (It was designed for this type of art). You can achieve the same result, but have far more options. However long it is taking you to pull these off in PS, you have cut that time in half in Illustrator. I used to teach classes in Vector graphics so I am glad to see someone utilizing the technique for car stuff.:D

Yes, they are called Tablets, with the most popular brand being Wacom.

Manik890
05-05-2006, 06:43 PM
Thanks Minacious, actually I don't use the pen tool. I use the line tool, but you cannot curve a line with a line tool. To make the curves you just do alot of short lines, to form a curve. Right now these toons are taking me around 3 hours a piece, the lotus has taken me about 4, but it is the most detialed yet. I would like to acomplish them in shorter time in the future, maybe cut them down to 2 hours, without losing quality.

Manik890

Alright, I've finished the lotus. I'm still liking the Porsche more though...

Oh and about the tutorial, I used the one from digimods.co.uk *Although I don't lasso around everything I drew, I just fill right away.

*That was my old technique, I do lasso everything now...

Great work Manik, the detail is amazing. Even the little lotus badges in the center of the alloys look great, I would have thought they would have been to small to get at. Are these your first 3 attempts? If so you seem to have mastered is right away. Sounds like your going to be doing more? Any idea what your next project will be? Maybe two cars in the same picture, or a car in drift? Id love to see that. :D

Could that be the Koeniggsegg? :P Great work.
I was so impressed with your pictures I hoped onto digimod and checked out the tutorial myself. I came up with this :D

http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/4448/fiestarstoon5ct.th.jpg (http://img269.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fiestarstoon5ct.jpg)

Im now onto the colouring stage, I just know im going to ruin it, I cant colour

Manik890
05-06-2006, 12:39 AM
Thats a great first try! Insane detail, great job on the tires and the grill. Just try and concentrate more on the straight lines on the car. Some of them seem wavy, other than that it loks outstanding! And yeah, these are my first few attempts. I think I will continue tooning.

For your first colouring stage don't worry about using very many different colours in the car, just pick two different colours for the light and dark sections of body on the car. For other pieces like dark grilles and the underbody just pick a real dark colour that doesn't stand out much. Thats how i did my first two. Even on the exige I think I only only have about 3 different shades of colour for the body. Good luck! :D

EDIT: oh and about tooning a 2 cars together, it is possible, it just takes more time. A drifting scene on the other hard would be difficult, as it would be very hard to cartoon a moving wheel. But if you put enough effort into it, I guess you could.

Damn I wish I had of read your tips for colouring before I started  . Either way, ive done now, like I said, i messed up on the colouring abit. I tried to get too many tones of colour when I think, like you said, less looks better. Also what you said about the wavey lines, I found you need to be a very patient person, im not lol. After a while i was just clicking rapidly so my lines was'nt too accurate. Took me 4 hours ish like you. I will try another one before long, there pretty cool. Hope to see your latest shortly :D

Daggernite that actually didn't turn out to shabby, I like it. It's cool how you left the lights in, real original!

Finally I've finshed the Koenigsegg. For some reason the rims took me forever to finish. I couldn't decide if I liked the CCR with the lights on or off, so I posted both. Enjoy!

Well manik, just been doing my latest car toon. Take alook and see what you think. Still needs colouring, and the grill aint done yet. Im just gunna stick with two colours for this one. Bright orange and dark orange :D

Ill stick it up when im done.

Daggernite
05-06-2006, 05:26 AM
yeah, theres 3 layers in all. One for the picture, one for the line tool, and the other to colour. Use the line tool on the 3rd lay so when you colour it does'nt go over your line.

GREAT JOB DAGGERNITE! Thats awesome! Great job on the colouring. Much better than your first. You did a great job on the light and dark areas. I haven't decided on what I'll be doing next, I probably will begin later today, I'll have an update up by tonight. I'm planning on doing the Muira, either the concept or the original.

btw, I'd love to see an Evo! Definatly one of my favs!

this is not called tooning, it is called 'vector' work.
just use the pen tool in PS, simple work, just very time consuming.
it is also alot easier/better to do in a illustrator, since illustrator is vector based, unlike PS which is only partly vector based.

^^ yeah you use the pen tool to make the lines .. which are vectors ... but in the end you dont fill the color as vectors and then flatten the image ;)

this is a Real vector http://www.koenigsegg.se/pressroom/EPS_LOGO.EPS <<;)

Toronto
05-06-2006, 04:22 PM
^^^ i have no idea what you think your are talking about.
but the fact is this form of art work is called 'vector' artwork,
i would know cause i have worked with many companies that like to put this type of artwork in their ad campaigns

i think after PS 4 or 5 it has been a raster/vector program, unlike illustrator (would be the best progam for artwork like this) which is vector only. and would perform alot better then PS for vector work like you are trying to do.

and you can fill the vector path's as vectors, you just don't know how to do it

saadie
05-06-2006, 04:40 PM
what i was saying is .. you can resize vectors to whatever size you like ... it wont turn boxy like the usuall pics when you increase their size ... thast why companies use them in the ad's cuz they can put em anywhere they want like huge ad boards etc etc ...
things arnt always what they seem ;)
they look like vector drawings but they arnt :P

"" and you can fill the vector path's as vectors, you just don't know how to do it ""
lol .. what ? actually after closing the vector's path .. you Fill it with color or gradient ...
i happen to work a bit on vectors

Manik, your latest is great, you've really got the hang of applying the shadows. I've found you need to be real careful to how you apply the technique. Too much can ruin the effect, to little and you dont get the effect. Also the shape is hard to do. But you seem to have mastered that. Well done.

Saadie - your car looks unique, its the colouring which differs from maniks original toon style. You've got the the many diffrent shades between the colours, blended it in really well, and it looks good. I really think these look cool and original.

nope ... i didnt use gradients ...... because youll have to program the gradiens for every other part .. it'll take lots of time .... btw i use paint shop pro ...
what i actually did was hand sprayed the ever part seperatly with 2 or 3 colors then did a mothion blur to smothen it up and a lil gaussian blur to give it a 3d effect :)
i tried to do it the way you do .. but i just cant figure out where to put what color

Unfortunatly im abit busy this week, and dont have as much spare time. Although I am still trying with photoshop and tooning cars. Although im yet to do a exzotic or high performance vehicel, Im still enjoying doing my performace fords. Here my latest which I did other day, still not coloured yet tho.

Outstanding work. The reflection and shades are so detailed im amazed. 3 seperate colours for the bodywork and rims? I dare not try that yet, i would completely mess up the whole thing. I agree with saadie that a gradiant would look better, it looks more natural and glass like.

But great work, really looks good.

Saadie had me thinking gradients so I decided to give it a try. While I was working on the car I loved the look granients made and liked it much more than my older style, but when I was finished I ended up liking both styles the same, its like gradients almost give the toon to much of a realistic look. My older style looked much more cartoony.
