Ok; finally I have finished uploading! Thank you TT for trying to explain to me the 100 batch upload thing, but my brain was fried last night and I just got into a flow with imageshack.

It was a good day overall. The sun was out in force during the morning (Dean and myself even got a suntan –well, I don’t know about Dean, but I have gone brown from red today)

However, the clouds built up over the afternoon and it got pretty dark, this fact was exacerbated by the tall building and narrow(ish) road which made my first day with the DSLR slightly tricky. I wanted to make the exposures longer, but got large blurs – so I stuck with ‘Auto’ mode and that was it.

In all fairness, the conditions were not conducive to good photography. This was mainly due to a fact Coombs has already alluded to; namely the barriers. It was crowded to say the least, but Dean and I had camped up to be at the front for several hours!! When the event kicked off (nearly two hours late I might add) everyone pushed forward crushing myself and Dean against the barriers. I could not move my foot more than two inches without standing on someone. This restricted movement was further enhanced by the position I decided to take – have a loo at the barriers in the photos…I had my head, arms and camera poking through the gap at the top. I was aware that if the barriers started to fail/fall over, I would be in some serious trouble so I resumed the standing position.

I also fell foul to the DSLR’s many auto-focus options. To start with, I had it set on the ‘nearest object’ setting, which I am sure you can appreciate is NO good in a crowded situation – if someone’s arm, head or finger was in the shot, the camera picked it up and focused on that!! I worked it out, and set the focus to the middle.

TT, I take you point about being in the wrong position for the camera, but on the flip side, we were in a good position for the video camera (operated by Dean). We/I am having issues currently. I have editing software coming out of my ears, but none of them pick my camera up by USB; it used to work fine with fire wire, but a cable went missing during the building works at my house.

This is starting to turn into a mini-essay, so I will move onto the event. I was well worth the many hours Dean and I waited about. Loudest car goes to a Lambo Merci – I can’t remember which one, perhaps Dean can help on that front.

Prima facie the barriers were a good idea to make the event safer, but they added a risk element of their own in my opinion. They also seriously restricted the video and photographic opportunities in several ways. 1st, you could not get any low down shots – which always look good and 2nd, once you had a good place you had to stay there. Last year, there were no barriers, and Coombs and I were running about everywhere. With no ‘front line’ so to speak this was a lot easier to do. This year, I was forced to stay in the same spot for fear of losing a good position and I doubt I could have moved if I wanted to at some points.

YAY! The camo Phantom and Top Gun SLR really rock my boat :good:

Only little mistake :D to be in a place where the cars are accelerating out of a corner: accelerating cars = VERY hard to take a proper panning shot ;). that said, I doubt there are any long straights in town where the cars travel at constant speed long enough :D

Ah, looks like your position was much closer than mine jon, i think you can see the top of my head in all the shots of yours up the hill! Some nice shots there jon, my photos arnt too good, a couple of the vids are ok, but once again are punctuated with me shouting 'go oooooooon' at all the cars. :oops:

Overall i thought this year was good in that you could see all the cars on the 'pit lane' but all the barriers and shit at the start made it loads harder to see, it was busier this year than last and in general the extra police presence made it a lot more shite IMO. Torqenstien did a nice little burnout in his GT and the sadist copper goes running up to give him a bolloking! Mind you that copper was a little fucking hitler, i saw him physically pushing a photographer around at the end, when he was clearly not in the way, i wish the friggin crowd had turned on him, little bastard, there was no need for it.
Me and my mate got in an argument with a security woman too, asking us and the guy above us to get down from where we were perched, we told her we would do when we could and carried on taking photos, just ignoring her and her barrage of insults, lol, quite hillarious. :lol: managed to get half of the audio on camera too haha

I hope you stayed where you were til the end jon, because the enzo did a small burnout just where you were i'd estimate!! I bet that sounded AWSOME from behind it!!! 8)

the CGT sounded absolutely brilliant, althougt the lambo Jon mentioned took the noise award. sounded like it had a bit of metal pipe for an exhaust and not much else.

I'll be there next time the gumball comes to the uk.

Only downer for me was the police on the A20 on the run to dover, meant the gumballers were taking it easy and we didn't see many out there.

Look at it another way, 3000 miles of hard driving = very battered paint work. Stickers don't seem so bad then do they.
