View Full Version : Ferrari to build new 'Dino' ...

Hmm, I hope this isn't a repost,
According to 'Channel4 Car' (original article by italiaspeed) Ferrari are planning to build a new 'Dino' to rival the V8 vantage, 911, etc.
http://www.channel4.com/4car/news/news-story.jsp?news_id=12219
To me, this is a really strange and dubious report, as I have recently read an interview with a Ferrari boss in which he said that Ferrari had no plans to make a lower-end car, they wanted to maintain the current status of the Ferrari 'brand' and not add to the lower end of their vehicle types.
Personally I was impressed with the official interview and really glad, I hope this news is not true. :?
I'll try to find the interview and quote him exactly.....

IF they bring back the DINO, why would it be cheaper than the f430?
we can only hope they will make a new dino.. well i know i'm hoping..

They won't make it, Ferrari would loose it's exclusivity. But they could name the future 430 replacer (rumoured to have a 4.5L V8) the Dino.

This seems to be the most logical decision for Ferrari.

"Last May I was invited to place a order on the much speculated Dino. I put down a deposit fully refundable incase the project did not get the green light.
Today i recieved a phone caller from the sales manager letting me know that ferrari has officially given the go ahead and that the Dino was planned for production. Unofficiall pictures were published in the german Auto Bild Magazine.
Coupe allocation for end 2007 and Spider for 1st quarter 2008 "
Se solo potevo tradure... Almeno e una persona che dice che Ferrari gli ha invitato a comprare la nuova Dino che vienera in 2007 e la Spider in 2008.

I'm sure a lot of people would ditch their 911 if there was a 70k Ferrari. Perhaps the cash would give much needed cash to the rest of Fiat.

this rumor has been around for a while. i dont think they could even do it logistically. IMO there are too many 360's out there. and making a dino would make that even worse. everyone would try to get one. it would fuck up the exclusivity.
Exactly thats the thing :!:

I thought this were good news but after reading your posts I changed my mind.
You're absolutely right, it would be very bad to see as many Ferrari as I see 911's now. A Ferrari isn't a car for anyone and it should stay that way 8)
BTW. I read in a portuguese forum that Ferrari is developing a 4WD system called "insertable 4x4". Read more here:

I remember they were talking to the Boss about this when the 599 was released. He said they will not make a Dino, because they do not want to dilute the brand.
He said they want to focus on getting cars to the customer faster instead of these extended wait list a la 2 years for the F430.

Its probably a FWD Alfa with a Ferrari badge ;) :P
That's why they say "4WD option" - that means they stick a rear diff on the FWD platform ;)

"According to Automotive News, Ferrari is hard at work on a new “entry-level” model (we use that term loosely).
Details are scarce, but the model is reportedly a 2+2 with a V8 powerplant and a hard top convertible mechanism, all of which sounds suspiciously like Maserati’s plans for the next GT.
The publication believes that the model will bow in Europe sometime in 2008, with a U.S. launch likely the following year." - Winding Road (taken from Automotive News: Ferrari plans entry-level V-8 2+2)
Not sure how reliable this is. I suppose this is different from the Dino. I agree though that Ferrari would lose exclusivity if they carry out these rumored plans. And please, I don't want a Ferrari SUV (as Lamborghini is supposedly planning) !!!!

Plus, it would make the Ferrari management liars since I have read a reputable interview where they said they would concentrate on other areas to make profit rather than devalue the brand with lower cost GT cars.

Anyway - I think this is just another rumour. It's been all over the net for the last two years that Ferrari was working on a Dino-style entry-level car... but I still don't think they will go for it, especially considering the HUGE financial success of the F430 :bah:
Yeah exactly, why would they do that :bah:

And as the F430 replacement is set to move from £122K to an estimated £140K base price in 2009, there'll soon be room for a new model to fill the vacuum.
Competing against the Aston V8, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Audi R8 and strangely more expensive Alfa 8C, the Dino is expected to carry a £94K price tag.
From the stats they've quoted, I cannot understand how it only gets compared to a Carrera S!! It would eat it alive.

I honestly have no problem with Ferrari building a V6 model with amazing curves and proportions, and flaired fenders etc.
Ferrari's weren't always 200-600,000$ monsters new... you used to be alble to almost afford one in the past (a FErrari for 10,000 $ where a Vette was $5,000)

Ferrari are a business and are in business to make money, and a "cheap" Ferrari will be very profitable, but at the same time they must be careful not to dilute the brand. They have to be very careful as to how they procede, IMHO.

10-30-2006, 07:22 PM
Well - even if they finally produce it - be sure it won't be cheaper than 100,000€...
Anyway - a 300hp mid-engined high-revving V6, with electro-gizmos and around 1200kg should be great! :D
300hp seems still too low for a modern v6 even from the boys in red; look at the final iteration of the Dino V6...
100,000 E.... unfortunately, it will sell because of it's name... but say.. if it were to be 2x the price of a Vette, then it may be tangable, even if slower :P

I read in a Portuguese magazine ( from Auto Bild group ) that it will cost 140.000 euros without taxes. I don't remember how much power they said it will have but guess it would be something between 400 and 450. It if will cost something like 150/160k euros I guess it's not very expensive.

Spy photographers have captured what could be the first proof that Ferrari is working on a new Dino. These pictures purportedly show a test mule of the new car, which became the subject of multiple rumors in recent weeks. Based on a F430 body, the test car doesn't give away anything about how the Dino will look, but it does seem to confirm development is underway.
The prototype's front fenders are a little wider and the side rocker panels are missing due to a different cooling system. It also looks like the area around gearbox and rear axle is slightly different. Another characteristic that identifies the test car as a mule for the Dino is its engine sound — spies say it was less sharp sounding than the a F430, and just plain different. Output is expected around 400 horsepower.
Spies also noticed both a BMW M6 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage going in and out at the Ferrari facility in Maranello, so it seems like they are the main target for the Dino as well as the legendary Porsche 911. While the F430 is about 160,000 euros, the Dino will start between 100,000 and 110,000 euros.

Ferrari’s Dino reborn
06th December 2006
Ferrari Dino 420
Unlike the classic original, the newcomer will get a front-mounted V8. The unit is expected to be an all-aluminum 90-degree 4.2-litre unit with around 480bhp
It's the supercar scoop of the year! Auto Express has had exclusive access to insider details and can now reveal all the details of the Italian legend’s most important new model of the decade. Yes, the Dino is back!
These pictures show the new Ferrari 420 Dino, which our sources in Italy have confirmed will go on sale in 2010. Despite being conceived more than two years ago, the whole project only got the green light in September, and is scheduled to be unveiled at a major motor show in 2009.
Taking the latter part of its name from Enzo Ferrari’s son, our contacts are confident that the eventual title will be ‘420 Dino’, with the number referring to the V8 engine’s size.
Back in Italy, one fierce debate is still raging between Ferrari, Pininfarina – the car’s designer – and Ferrari’s owner, Fiat. While all indicators still lean toward the Dino being a coupé-cabriolet with a folding hard-top, some bosses would prefer to launch the entry-level model as a berlinetta hard-top GTB first, followed soon after by a targa GTS.
This would follow the trend set by the 246 Dino GT and GTS from 1968 and 1971, and the 308 GTB and GTS from 1975 and 1977.
Whatever is chosen, annual Dino production is figured to be anywhere between 3,500 and 5,000 cars, and Ferrari has actively sought partners to help lower and spread out the massive manufacturing costs. One company involved is aluminium specialist Alcoa, who will be making the spaceframe chassis in a new facility in Modena, Italy. The outer shell will be constructed from carbon fibre.
The new Dino started life as a Maserati in 2004. However, Ferrari’s then sister firm changed its plans, deciding to develop a luxurious Quattroporte-based coupé to rival the Mer*cedes CL instead. So Ferrari adopted the chassis and technology for the Dino.
Unlike the classic original, the newcomer will get a front-mounted V8. The unit is expected to be an all-aluminum 90-degree 4.2-litre unit with around 480bhp.
Inside, the Dino will be the first Ferrari to get standard-fit satellite navigation. The cabin promises to be practical, and alongside the carbon fibre trim shown, an aluminium finish will also be available. Transmission options haven’t been confirmed, but the paddleshifters are likely to control an automated manual.
Aimed squarely at Porsche’s 911 Turbo and Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage, the Dino will be priced between £82,000 and £90,000. This will make the Ferrari badge more accessible, but will also leave room for the F430 to move upmarket. We can also reveal plans to give that model a 550bhp 5.0-litre V10 by the end of 2008. An all-new replacement for the F430 is also already on the drawing board, and is scheduled for 2010.
- i know that a couple of days ago, ferrari announced that there are no plans to build the dino, then this article comes out... i'm really not sure what to think now. it's good to hear that the f430 is going to receive a power boost. but if they choose to pursue that in 2008, by then, 550bhp would be 'normal' and rather weak (?)
bmagni
12-06-2006, 01:35 PM
I don't think Ferrari has the capacity to produce 5000 units of the same car a year, and the whole shell made of carbon fibre for an entry level sounds incoherent...
bmagni
12-07-2006, 12:45 AM
Ok so the insiders say that Ferrari is really producing the Dino mainly for two reasons. One so they can reduce the waiting list and secondly to use the remaining capacity of the Modena factory, that is capable of producing 15000 cars, but they only produce 6000 because of the not so great demand of Maseratis.
The engine will be a a 4.2 V8 derived from the Maserati, and it won't be too complex so they reduce costs. At the same time Maserati will get a 4.7 with 450 to up to 500 hp, and the F430 getting a 4.5 with 520 hp.
Also some say the "Dino" will be a 2 seater Maserati to compete with Porsche and that the bigger Maseratis will compete with Aston Martin.
If theres so much deal about this its because something is happening... what ? I guess we won't know until its officially released

What price point is this Dino supposed to come in at?
If it's anything less than $100,000 it will be a disaster.
A new ferrari at under $100,000 will have many enthusiasts stretchign to meet this car and buy their first 'new" ferrari.
The result will be many people being burned by Ferraris notorious reliability and delivery issues.
When you a gajillionaire, you may be upset by the finnicky nature of your new yet unreliable and not so greatly built Ferrari - and keep yourself busy with one of your other 20 cars... however if you scraped together the pennies to buy the "entry level' F-Car you will be very disappointed by the outrageous cost of services and poor reliability of you great new dream car.
Couple this with a dealer network that is used to customers who don't ever ask the price of repairs and just "pay to play' and you have a recipe for a marketing and image disaster. ;)
Can you imagine the local Luigi il Mafiosa Ferrari dealership haggling over price and service with a "poor' customer/ ;)
It won't happen - this plethora of models from Ferrari will be the beginning of the end of a great sales run.
Ferrari will slip into financial ruin and Porsche will have to bail them out ;)

Well if you want to use a good perspective of how a $100,000 Ferrari will turn out all you have to do is look at the Maserati Gransport. It's all Ferrari for a cheap price, so if you want to speculate on reliability and quality then use that as an example. So in reality they've been building a cheap Ferrari for awhile, and we've just been overlooking the badge.

I think this car may be the Dino, a front engine car with hard top and a price that will not be lower than 120.000 €
The development, made by Ferrari/Maserati, is advanced; in principle it seemed this car had to be a 3th Maserati, but now the program is passed to Ferrari.

Entry Level Ferrari = Maserati
It will stay this way, just as it was designed. If this "new Dino" is produced expect very limited production and an inflated price tag. Ferrari are too proud to build a Boxter/Cayman. If you think otherwise you are deluded. If Ferrari were in real financial trouble they would drop the Maserati line, not cheapen the Ferrari name. Sorry if I'm repeating anyone else's thoughts, just had to get mine out there.

I posted this some time ago:

(not sure if this has been posted, but it does offer some good info)
From Automobile Magazine:
2009 Ferrari Dino is Coming
We've confirmed a top-secret project for a new, entry-level Ferrari to slot below the F430. The car is ambitiously timed for a late 2008 launch (although suppliers expect it to be delayed until early 2009). Officially, company executives scoff at the notion of such a Ferrari, but what if the new Ferrari wasn't, strictly speaking, a Ferrari? Just as was the case with the original Dino (see sidebar), Ferrari's new entry-level model probably will not be adorned with a Ferrari badge.
The car that's set to become the new Dino originally was half of a two-car Maserati program that used a shortened Quattroporte platform. The first is a two-plus-two that debuts at Geneva and will replace the GranSport coupe later in 2007. (The next Maserati Spyder, however, won't arrive until 2010 and is based on new four-wheel-drive components borrowed from the next-generation Alfa Romeo 166 sedan.)
The second car in the program is a smaller, lighter two-seater. And despite the official denials, Ferrari is a logical home for it, particularly when you learn that both cars need to go into production if the $50 million investment is ever to be recovered and that the next F430 (due in 2009) will move up significantly in base price from today's $175,000 to more than $200,000. That makes room for a lower-priced model, and by going the Dino route, there's no danger of diluting the Ferrari brand image.
The Maserati connection would define the car's key ingredients. They include a front-mounted engine, a control-arm suspension with electronic damper control, Brembo brakes with optional carbon-ceramic discs, and a body structure that uses plenty of aluminum and carbon fiber. What powers the new Dino? A high-revving 4.0-liter V-8 rated at 430 hp is a realistic starting point--not bad considering the car's target weight of 3500 pounds.
Priced at about $170,000, this car will be positioned against the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the Porsche 911 Turbo, and the Audi R8. Boasting a Ferrari-shared V-8, a rear transaxle (like that from the 599GTB), a retractable hard top with an optional glass roof panel, and a steering wheel complete with the manettino drive-mode selector, it has plenty of Ferrari DNA.
It also picks up interesting historical threads. Not only does it resurrect the Dino concept, but it would be the first front-engine, eight-cylinder Ferrari in a half-century. Two sports racers with that configuration--powered by tiny 75-hp, 1.5-liter units--were built in 1940, but they wore Auto Avio Costruzioni 815 badges. Why? Because Enzo Ferrari, who had left Alfa Romeo to found his own company, agreed on a four-year grace period before he would start putting his name on his firm's cars.

Along comes Infomotori to throw accelerant on the raging fire of Dino speculation. The return of the Dino has been rumored far and wide, and we'd all love to see a Ferrari that may be a little more obtainable for us plebians. Andrea Rosati has dreamed up a car that looks an awful lot like what we've already seen in the form of the 420 Dino. One welcome change from 99% of Ferrari pictures out there is Rosati's use of giallo instead of the ubiquitous rosso. Speculative minds churning feverishly, Infomotori goes on to imagine a 300hp V6 displacing 3.0 liters offering up performance on par with the Porsche Boxster.
True or not, the idea of an entry-level Ferrari never fails to excite. It's not the flat-out performance, but the entire package. Sumptuous old-world interiors, unabashed style (sometimes good, sometimes bad, always engaging), glorious sounds from the machinery -- these cars are not about shuttling you around from chore to chore. Ferraris are about the the goods under the skin. We have no doubt that the new Dino will be the bottom of the range should it ever emerge, but there will be nothing cheap or second-rate about it. Every marque needs to have an entry point, and a Dino would likely be in $100,000 territory. Still, it'd be cheaper than its stablemates - and there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari. A "project car" Mondial will still run you 10 grand.

New Ferrari Dino tipped to be at Frankfurt Auto Show
The on again off again entry-level Ferrari is back in the headlines, this time rumored to be making a showing at September's Frankfurt Auto Show, which is shaping up to be one of the hottest shows for sports car fans. German magazine AutoZeitung is betting that a new model to be called the Dino will be on display, a car designed to rival the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
The Dino will likely feature a 400-hp mid-mounted V8 engine fed with cold air via two large inlets on the rear fenders. Top speed should be in excess of 185 mph with the 0-62 mph taking roughly four seconds. Additional features would be an F1-style gearbox, carbon-fiber brakes and a lightweight composite body. Adding to the speculation, Ferrari could also reveal the upcoming F430 Challenge Stradale in Frankfurt, as hinted by its Chairman Luca di Montezemolo earlier in the year.
In response, arch rival Lamborghini may unveil its own entry-level model with a new Gallardo V8 that was spotted recently by spy photographers circling the Nurburgring, as well as a Murciélago Superleggera seen in recent spy shots. In all, there's reported to be up to 22 different sports cars at the Frankfurt show, so if you're a car nut you better start saving those euros and taking German classes.

Despite constant denials about the existence of a new small Ferrari from officials, images of a prototype being tested on a dyno have emerged. Rumored to be the successor to the original Dino, early reports suggest it will be launched by 2010, and to solve the problem of limited capacity at the Maranello plant, Ferrari will likely outsource production of the car to Maserati.
Camouflaged by the shell of a Maserati Gran Tursimo, the new small Ferrari is expected to share much in common with the car from Modena including a new folding metal roof. The engine, however, will share its design with the 4.7L V8 that will power the Alfa Romeo 8C according to the guys at Autoblog.it, but power will be boosted to differentiate the two cars.
One major factor against the introduction of a new Dino is the fact that Ferrari isn’t even meeting demand for its high-end models. A distinct attribute of the original Dino was that it was never badged as a Ferrari, so like the original, the new version may also be badged with something other than the Prancing Horse. This would also substantiate the claims from Ferrari’s management that there is no ‘Ferrari’ Dino in the works.

Ferrari Dino 599 Test Mule Spy Photos
Here is the first proof that Ferrari is working on a new Dino. These exclusive pictures are showing a mule of the new car. Based on a 599 body it doesn't yet give away so much but at least a little of what will become the new Dino. What identifies the test car as a mule for the Dino is the engine sound, or should we say the lack of it. It clearly doesn't sound as sharp as a F430 for example. The Classic Dino was built between 1968 and 1976, and its name honours the founder Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredino "Dino" Ferrari, who died in 1956 at the age of 24 from muscular dystrophy. While that vintage Dino had a V6 behind the driver, the new one will be powered by a V8 with 400 bhp. Ferrari will most likely start with a Coupe, but expect a Spider later on. There is a high possibility that Pininfarina will do the design work with input from former Ferrari design boss Frank Stephenson, who now heads Fiat's Centro Stile operation.
The Dino will be starting at approximately 100-110.000 Euros. Insiders are saying that it's possible to sell up to 4000 Dino's annually once the car gets the green light for production. Such a figure would instantly double Ferrari's yearly production and give the marque a whole new group of customers. There is also talk about the new Dino being built at the Maserati factory in the city of Modena. This city is very important to the history of Ferrari, as it is the town where its founder Enzo Ferrari was born. Even if Ferrari is still denying the project, we expect to see it on the roads in 2009.
If this isn't the Dino, I wonder what it could be?

More rumored info:
Following yesterday's reveal of this new Ferrari prototype, more information about the car has surfaced. The guys at Winding Road are claiming it'll be available as a either a 2+2 or a strict two-seater and its chassis will be constructed with aluminum by Alcoa. Apparently you'll be able to option the car with two seats in the back or a storage shelf, which could also potentially reduce weight.
The car won't feature the latest in Ferrari go-fast gear, but it'll still get a V8 powerplant with around 400hp on offer. Though many have suggested the new model will be called the Dino, one of Winding Road's sources has revealed the car won't in fact be named after the son of Enzo Ferrari.
The test-mule seen here may look like a regular 599 GTB with some camo gear but from certain angles the panels seem to be out of shape, suggesting the car's internals are different in size to the current Ferrari flagship. We can also gather that the car's engine will likely sit up front and its wheelbase will be significantly shorter than the 599's.
blue8
08-25-2007, 10:35 AM
Speculation surrounding this prototype says it's a new version of the Dino GT, the midengine sports car built by Ferrari from 1968-'73. Well, it's certainly no downsized Ferrari 599 GTB as the sheet metal suggests, but after some investigation we think it might be a revival of a different sports car nameplate of the past — the Maserati Ghibli.
Let's start with the prototype itself. Once you compare it to a standard 599 GTB, you'll see a couple of clear differences. When viewed in profile, the crucial dash-to-axle ratio up front is shorter, probably because this car doesn't need room for a V12 under the hood. Then look at the prototype from the front and you will notice the narrow track, as the tires don't quite fill the wheelwells properly.
Another point to consider: The original Dino GT from the 1960s was a midengine car, and unless this prototype has some massive underbody changes that we can't see, its power plant resides up front. Previous Dino models also used a relatively small V6 originally designed as a racing engine.
Listen to this prototype and you'll clearly hear a V8 providing the power. And if it's a detuned version of the 4.3-liter engine used in the F430 as some have suggested, it sure doesn't sound like it.
So the test mule is not a 599 GTB, and it has a V8 engine mounted up front. This doesn't sound like any Ferrari we know, and Ferrari General Manager Amadeo Felisa continues to strongly deny that Ferrari plans any sort of downsize, V8-powered car.
This leads us to the Maserati Ghibli. Unlike Ferrari, Maserati already builds a front-engined coupe with a V8 — the GranTurismo. This is a big GT 2+2, however, and its wheelbase is even longer than that of the Ferrari 599 GTB.
We think there's plenty of room in the Maserati lineup for a smaller, hard-edged two-seater, a sports car like the original Ghibli, which debuted in 1967 as Maserati's answer to the Ferrari 275 GTB. It would take the place of Maserati's poorly executed Coupe and Spyder models and could share parts with the V8-powered Alfa Romeo 8C.Maserati has even submitted a trademark application for the name.
More important, a revived Ghibli would give Maserati a new entry-level car better positioned to compete with modern rivals like the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Lamborghini Gallardo. And unlike Ferrari, which has consistently said it has no desire to expand production in order to maintain its exclusivity, Maserati has not been shy about saying that it would like to boost output at its plant in Modena.
It's a guessing game, but we think Maserati is a better guess than Alfa Romeo or Ferrari. And we're guessing it'll be fast, too.
A Maserati seems more plausible (and preferable) than an entry-level Ferrari.

Well I was always wondering why the new Grand Turismo barely has anymore power then the Maserati Coupe/Coupe Gransport. The Grand Turismo seems bigger, softer and heavier. But now it makes sense, the grand turismo isnt a direct replacement for the Coupe/Gransport. Instead they decide to make the Grandturismo (the softer 2+2 maserati gt car, still sporty aka not a sedan Quattroporte) BUT they will also be making a coupe more like the gransport which could be 2+2 or just 2 seater like the spyder was, and that will be the ghibli.

Maybe that shortened 599 test mule is a new maserati? The Maserati Ghibli, since the Granturismo only has 5 more hp then a Gransport and is no light weight. So I think they're making another Maserati model, which is gonna be more gransport like and less granturismo like.

Ferrari is set to unveil a surprise new car early in 2008 – but it will not be the long-rumoured ‘new Dino’.
According to sources at the company, the new model will be a front-engined coupe with a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, a two-plus-two cabin layout, a new 450bhp direct injection V8 engine, and a price tag of just over £130,000; in other words, it’ll be a direct rival for the Aston Martin DB9 and Bentley Continental GT, and you can get an idea of what it could look like in our gallery.
The Italian DB9 in detail
Some sources say the new Ferrari – likely codename F149 – will be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in early January, and may get the iconic ‘California’ name tag when it arrives in the showroom. However, there’s no clear indication on how far away the car is from production.
A 4.3-litre V8 engine will power the new car, which some sources think will be an updated version of the unit found in the current, mid-engined F430 coupe.
It’s likely to be fitted with direct fuel injection and be good for around 450bhp; slightly less than the F430 two-seater, which suggests that the new car will have a more relaxed, GT-like character. It’ll also be a more usable prospect than the F430; the occasional rear seats should provide enough room for children and smaller adults, while a generous boot out back will swallow much more baggage than an F430.
The firm’s F1 sequential paddleshift transmission is tipped to be fitted to the car as standard.
Scooped: an early prototype
Hard details about Ferrari’s new coupe are very sketchy even though it is said to be close to being made public. However, spy shots have been snatched in Germany of a front-engine coupe wearing fake ‘F599’ cladding (see gallery).
Close examination of the pictures show a car that is notably smaller than an F599, with a rather smaller nose section and a narrower front track.
Although the central section of the new car looks to be similar to that of the F599, both the front and rear sections look to have been re-worked and re-sized.
One source suggests that ‘F149’ will actually be built around an updated, more rigid, aluminium spaceframe chassis engineered by Ferrari and Alcoa.
This could indicate that the prototype caught by Autocar’s spies is actually a very early engineering mule using a new nose section carrying the new-generation direct-injection V8 engine. If so, the new F149 will be noticeably slimmer hipped than the 599.
A change in model philosophy
This unexpected move into a new market segment by the Italians is based on sound logic. One insider suggests the line of thinking is that Ferrari has a gaping hole in its line up which would be neatly filled by a lower-priced front-engined GT car.
Both Ferrari’s existing GT cars – the 599 GTB Fiorano and 612 Scaglietti - are big bruisers powered by large V12 engines. They’re also priced at the top-end of the market, from £172k and £176k.
Sources have suggested that potential Ferrari buyers are looking for a softer two-plus-two GT that’s an everyday driver, pitched at about the same price as the £130,000 F430.
Ferrari sees its iconic brand as strong enough to carry off the smaller GT at a higher price point than cars similar in concept, but cheaper, like the Aston Martin DB9, Bentley Continental GT and Porsche 911 Turbo.
All these models are relatively new to the market, and are selling strongly largely because they are practical everyday supercars more useable, and possibly less intimidating, than the mid-engined F430, the traditional entry point for Ferrari ownership.
Ferrari particularly has to take heed of the runaway success of Aston Martin. The British car-maker is already selling more cars each year than Ferrari, and the Rapide four-door, due on sale in late 2009, will further widen the sales gap if Maranello doesn’t act soon.
Those close to the company suggest that this new V8 GT model is the first part of a restructuring programme that will see the firm dumping its four-seater V12 model, currently the 612, and replacing its mid-engined V8 model with a more expensive, but no less economical mid-engined V10.
But whatever Ferrari’s long term plan, with the global economy looking set to cool markedly over the next couple of years, it would also do well to rely less on its high-end models. There is currently an 18-month waiting list for the 599; in five years time, there may not be such demand for V12-engined exotica.
In any case, shaving weight back, making its cars smaller and using a smaller displacement engine are the basic principles behind Ferrari’s new engineering direction, which was revealed at its 60th anniversary celebrations earlier this summer.
The company has promised that the average CO2 output of its cars will be just 250g/km by 2015.

no problem dani!
JUST TODAY, i have confirmed that there are NO plans for any Dino to go into production. Inside the industry, there have been conflicting reports of a Dino resurrection, however i can say that MOST of these rumours have erroneously called the upcoming "430 California" as the "new Dino".
As for a smaller, cheaper Ferrari, i've been told that the supplier lists for Ferrari contain NO upcoming (in the next 2 or 3 years) current production model that fit the idea of a "budget" Ferrari/Dino
sorry fellas :|
people just won't stop, its like the article you posted... they keep saying the Dino is coming... but oh well, its been denied a thousand times and journalists keep undenying it

I've heard it will be for a front engined V8 called F430GT "California" selling for around the same price of todays F430 ready for the F430's replacement which is meant to be a more extreme machine.

Ferrari recently trademarked the term "Ferrari GT California," according to a December 2006 filing with a government agency in the United States. The filing, originally discovered by WorldCarFans reader "Jordoweasel", covers all use of the term pertaining to vehicles, as well as toys, models, games, and video games. A copy of the search result can be seen in the photo gallery at right.
Ferrari has yet to respond to two requests from WorldCarFans for an interview. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Ferrari S.p.A. in Modena, Italy, applied for the trademark.
The lack of response gives cause for speculation. First, Ferrari has repeatedly denied rumors of a brand new Ferrari Dino in the works. Although we have brought you spy photos of a Ferrari test mule using the body of the 599, and one using the body of a Maserati Granturismo, nobody is talking at Ferrari. What we have been referring to as a potential new Dino might actually be a GT California.
This rumor does have some legs, as other sources are reporting on Ferrari's alleged development of a 2+2 car with a 4.3L V8 under the hood (not in the rear). This car is speculated for early next year, perhaps at the Detroit show in January. German publication AutoZeitung had also been claiming a new Ferrari concept would be unveiled in Frankfurt, which never happened. This could also be a potential GT California.
Italiaspeed has also reported on a Ferrari 2+2 cabriolet, possibly called the 430 GT California, to debut at the Detroit Motor Show. The car will supposedly have a folding hard-top. Reportedly using the same F1 gearbox as the F430 Scuderia, with optional manual transmission, this car could be a likely candidate for the trademark filed by the company. Italiaspeed seems to think this car would be priced around €130,000 ($185,000). That would put the car in competition with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
Two other possible uses for the trademark include either something being developed for production that has not been spied or leaked, or it represents a model name that Ferrari may end up scrapping, or never using to begin with. One patent attorney in Chicago thinks the latter is unlikely, as any trademark filing with the USPTO must be done with the intention of using the mark.
The filing, which cost Ferrari $350 (significantly less than a set of ceramic brakes on the F430, as Jordoweasel points out), will likely win Ferrari more publicity, and spark yet another guessing game. Either way, take a look at the filing, get creative, and let us know what you think by posting a comment.

You mean those half-assed shelves? ;-)
I hope they don't call it a Dino. And I can't believe Ferrari's committed to this. Isn't that market oversaturated? Isn't that going to encroach on Maserati Gran Turismo's sales?

Not really, the California, Dino or whatever is supposed to be cheaper but close to the F430 price (circa 180) so lets say they ask 160 for it. The most expensive Maserati GT is 135 or something among that. The California will be a hard top convertible and the GT is coupe so there won't be much of a competition there.

Only problem Masser will have with trying to produce a 911 rival, is the reliability factor - Porsche make a reasonably priced bullet proof car that people enjoy driving hard - not exactly the market Ferrari or Maserati are known to support.

Rumor is that the new Ferrari will be unveiled during the Paris Motor Show this year
Before you read this, go to the kitchen and get the biggest grain of kosher salt you can find. Dig around until you've got a big one. Ready? Okay: rumors are circulating that Hot Wheels has spilled the proverbial beans on the arrival of a new Ferrari Dino. Sounds a little ridiculous, but not entirely outside the realm of possibility. Mattel's Hot Wheels brand has the exclusive rights to make scale model Ferraris, and as such may be privy to advanced information on what Maranello's developing in order to get scale models to market efficiently. The word comes from the Diecast Legends website, an online model retailer that is now taking pre-orders on the claim that Mattel announced a 1/18 scale replica of the new Dino for the Hot Wheels Elite line. It's worth noting, though, that the penchant for jumping the gun on the part of diecast retailers is notorious among collectors, and this may very well be just another case.
With all the spy shots we've shown, however, it seems more than likely that Ferrari is indeed working on a new entry-level model. (Naysayers will insist the test mule spied is actually an upcoming Maserati.) But after years of denying such a car was in the pipeline, Ferrari chiefs Luca di Montezemolo and Jean Todt reportedly announced that a new (though unspecified) Ferrari would be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this coming fall. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
