Don't ask, i'll explain later, but it looks like an SLR is on the cards in the near future (possibly within an hour!)

Which would you go for and why?

Tough question, I asked the same thing on another forum a few days ago, almost everybody told me to go for the 350D.

350 D is the easy answer... but it depends on what lenses you want, and how much you have to spend... i dont have much experience with Nikon; but they definately have a quality product; just fewer MP... perhaps somethingis gained in other areas?

Well, I have just been to Jessops (our local camera shop) so I can now explain myself lol

My dad is a keen bird spotter and has been using the film SLRs for many years. He announced today that he want to make the change to digital! Not bad!

So, he is looking for under a grand all in (lense filter, memory card, e.t.c)

We have had a feel of the 350d, D50 and D70s and the D70 is by far the better camera IMO.

The standard lense (18-70mm f/3.5-4.5) is a lot better than the 350d's (EF-S 18-55mm).

I am not too worried about the mega pixels and more interested in the picture quality and according to Mr jessops the D70 is better.

Anyway, I have put dad off an impulse buy, but there should be an SLR within 2 weeks. 8)

[Also, I think the D50 is more of the 350d's competitor  ]

Well, certainly the stock-lens in the 350D kit isn't the best around (after reading around the net and on here), but the body is nice and compact, and with another £500 on a lens it becomes a way more expensive piece of kit than a stock D50/D70

Good Luck with the hunt - Jessops are doing poorly on sales at the moment, so try and get a discount in with the bargain

hehe, yep, they issued a profits warning not so long ago.

At the end of the day, I don't think you can go far wrong with either camera

^ Exactly. . . both are great products.

But pick them up and see which one feels better in your hands. I went with the D50 only because it felt a lot better than the 350D in my hands. But then again the 350D is a really really good camera.

Cant go wrong with either D50/350D. The 350D was rated slightly better than a D70. But lenses make much more difference - buy the cheapest decent SLR you can afford and splurge on good lenses :)

Definitely more of a person choice, as both cameras really are excellent. I have a D50, and I highly recommend it, but you can't go wrong. 8)

this is very good advice, you want to be comfortable holding, cus if your not your not gonna want to use it and it wont help you take good picture. so go and play with both cameras, maybe even try the batter grip for the 350.

Well, we went for the Nikon D70s in the end. It really came down to what we like the feel of so to speak.

Anyway we ordered -

Nikon D70s
Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED
SanDisk 1Gb Extreme™ III CompactFlash®
Hoya UV O filter 67mm
Hoya Circular Polarizing filter 67mm
Cover 36: Two Year Extention Guarantee for Digital over £750
Nikon CF-D70 case for D70/D70S

Not sure when it will arrive being Easter and all - I have only just placed the order 0X

Nope, not Jessops...

www.cameraworld.co.uk They also have a couple of shops if I have any issues :P They were also several hundred cheaper than Jessops

It all cost £940 (Jessops = £1200) which is a lot, but well worth it IMO. It is all on next day delivery - they should process the order tomorrow which would mean a Tues-Wed delivery date. 8)

Thak you! 8)

The shop rang up to say they made a mistake with the filters they put with the camera; the Hoya filters are not for digital cameras, so they have been changed at no extra charge.

I will now get:
Marumi DHG Circular PL(D) 67mm
Marumi DHG Lens Protect 67mm

I am also getting a different case as they were out of stock of the Nikon ones I ordered. No big issue though! 8)

The camera will be delivered on Wed
