It looks weird with Chrome window trim. . . usually BMW Sport Packaged cars have black or shadow trim.

I don't know about new cars, but the old M cars all came with regular chrome trim, like the regular series cars...and shadowline was an option...

I have some sad news for you mate, Audi quattro GmbH currently proceed some study test on a new Audi B7 RS4 "Plus" version available for late 2008. It's a lightweight version of the RS4 with DSG gear box and the best... a FSI V8 4.2L engine of 480 or 500hp ! Bye Bye future BMW E90 M3 CSL under every road conditions conceivable ! :prr:

do you have the specs of the CSL ?? i don't think so, and clearly theyre gonna crash that thing called RS4 "plus" - still theres no match for the E46 CSL.
Seriously all the way the have to go to compete, the S4 is supposed to match the M3, but it can't it gets awfuly owned, then the RS4 (the past one) which matches the M3, but if it follows the order it should compete with the CSL... double, triple, cuadruple ownage !! and WTF is RS4 "plus" ? an attempt to match the CSL which following the pattern its rival should be an M3 GTR. which in other words should be Audi would get owned... again... whats next ?? "RS4 plus DTM we can't get more words in it but we want to beat the M3" ???

Ok so can someone help me out a bit about the M3 thing. I want to trade my G35 for something faster, I was thinking either Current M3, New M3, Lotus Exige, or GT-R.
Problem with GT-R is that it might be too expensive and overpriced, problem with Exige is that they sell them 3 hours away from here and to service it, I would have to go local to a toyota/lexus shop instead and I am really anal bout oil changes and services etc. and now the problem with M3's Current one looks Good, but outdated (like the G35's look much better) but the next-gen M3 is gonna be faster. Problem with newer M3 is that from what I see, it wont be nice at all (fast, but not pretty).
So my question is, E46 M3's are wider than regular 3 series? (or do they just have fatter bumper/tires?)
if BMW follow the tradition of making M cars very very similar (less grilles and badges) than its non M version, then I think the future M3 will sux bad in looks.

I like BMWs, and i am in love with the M models. But i can say that i dont recomend the new M3 which will come now, becouse in a past fey years BMW gain a very bad reputation. The problems are electrical faults, bugs on first edition cars (E63, E65).
And the new E60 M5 has some problems i think its called VANOS.
But Demon i recomend the new RS4/S4 and of course a E46 M3
If you like the new M3 wait a few years
I dont see the point in spending 70+K on the RS4 AUDI when you can get an E55 for barely much more. 8)

Well Demon it seemed no one answered, but the M3 does have wider fenders and a wider foot. Mercs aren't anything special unless you get the new S-Class, and german cars altogether don't look to special since you couldn't see a difference between an A4, S4, RS4 unless you have some common knowledge on cars. IMO, i would get two cars with the budget you're talking about. A B6 A4 Quattro for a daily and strict sports car for the weekends. Maybe an older NSX, it isn't amazingly fast in the straights but the sound of the engine and the MR set up make it fun to drive and isn't that what it's all about. You can do all that for $50-60k depending on how many miles bother you on the NSX. Or you can go my route and spend $12k and build yourself a LSX RX-7. :D Or spend 17-18 and have someone else build it, you won't regret it!!
You could also go for an Cobra replica car which are a blast to drive with side pipes screaming in your ears, and they're eye catchers. You can find a good one for $30k in good condition.
If you want a daily sports car than i'de say get the RS4, M3 interiors are rubbish now and i can only handle so much uglyness. But if your smart you'll go all out and have a real sports car and relax when you want in an comfy A4 or somethin.
I like the E46 M3, but it will look outdated pretty soon. I really want a car that looks good (and 2 door also). Just like with girls, I rather have a sweet pretty girl and have OK sex with her, than one that leaves me breathless but misses a tooth.
That's an interesting way to think about it. :)
But I disagree with you on the fact that you say the E46 M3 will look outdated pretty soon, if anything the new one will look outdated faster then the previous design.
I believe the new BMW's are nothing more then a test bed for the next generation of the BMW's which I think will look much better and much well thought out, and they won't have to be redesigned as soon as they come out like the 7 series did.
It was a big jump for BMW to go from the previous generation BMW's to the new ones, and I think we have to give them a bit more time for them to get their act together to design "the ultimate driving machine"

So my question is, E46 M3's are wider than regular 3 series? (or do they just have fatter bumper/tires?)
Yes, they have wider fenders and quarter panels.
I believe the new BMW's are nothing more then a test bed for the next generation of the BMW's which I think will look much better and much well thought out, and they won't have to be redesigned as soon as they come out like the 7 series did.
The 7 Series was redesigned was on schedule. BMWs have a 7 year cycle and the facelift always comes after the 4 year. The E65 7 Series debuted as a 2002 Model and 4 Model years later, the facelifted one is out as a 2006 Model Year.

Almost the same tail lights as the new 3-series coupe (non M). Thats a real disappointment. Looks like a Honda from the back.
I also have it that the 4.0 V8 will be producing 430 hp, not 400 as previously thought. My source on this is fairly accurate, but we'll have to wait and see for sure.
Will the performance and driving experience be enough to make up for the looks? Lets hope so, but it will take a lot.

I think they should have kept the E90 front, because that looked pretty aggressive. The front of the coupe looks a bit soft to me.
Also the taillights of the E92 do look a little better, especially because the ones on the E90 were ugly, and I confused them with a Nissan Primera quite a few times in the beginning.
And I presume that the engine will be another masterpiece, like almost every BMW engine.

Great Pics...Thanks for posting.
I'd really like to see what they've done with the interrior.
I know that this car is supposed to be unveiled at the Paris auto show later this year, but does anyone know when it will be available to purchase. Will it be released in 2007 as an 07 or 08 model?

The US Market will have a standard traditional manual for sure. But I don't know about the rest of the world.
Hmm, still not sure about the coupe's styling. Front eyes/headlights looks too much like a Pontiac and the rear taillights looks like the 7 Series. Doesn't look sporty or aggressive.

Actually, the 7 speed auto SMG ( called BMW SMG III) is the standard tranny for the car. A proper 6 speed manual will be offered as an option.

Note: When Bangle took over BMW he was credited with being responsible for alot of van hooydonk's designs. The "bangle look" is acctually one created by hooydonk's pencil but I think both are great designers and with one as head of BMW group design and the other as head of BMW car design we should see more great products

AFAIK, Bangle developed the flame surfacing design theory. Which was based off italian contemporary rock scuplture, which uses light and shadow to create the image itself. IIRC, Hooydonk was part of the team that drafted the proportions on the current crop of cars, but Bangle himself fnished everything else. I know that Bangle was the one who completed the E90 sedan, which was his last project as being head of car design, and Hooydonk himself is responsible for the Z4 Coupe and the E92 Coupe.

BMW better hurry with the realease of the new M3, because the hp wars are getting too close to try to wow people with a 400-420 hp car. Hell a second hand GTO with 400hp can be bought for 20K.
Hopefully it is taking so long, because they realize this and they are revamping their the power capability. Maybe we will see a 420-450hp M3. If not, they might see ppl opt for an upcoming 500hp LS7 Camaro.
We will see..................I will hold faith......because I want one.

When there's a BMW being offered, there's always people willing to take the BMW marque over something American.

especially since its a given that the thing will leave the camaro in the dust as far as handling, quality, practicality, and probably acceleration if its light enough.

I disagree........... some younger people who can afford and M3 but also like to have the power on the block..........just may opt for a cheaper more powerful car. The M3 will not lose sales, because it has a cult behind it, but if it only sports 400hp, people who though about buying it before may just decline the offer.
Also, I am mainly speaking of Americans, because we have the best choice of high horsepower cars for not alot of cash. 45K - 500hp that can out accelerate a 55-60K 400hp car.........you bet people will go for the cheaper one. You have to remember that here in the US, most people just want stop light speed. When the E46 M3 was realeased it was definatly a bechmark, and could beat most cars on the road in my opinion. But if the E92 is underpowered it wont have the same effect. Time will tell

Fair point. But people who can afford an M3 will most likely be more than aware about why they're buying an M3 over a cheaper, higher-powered car.
People who are in the 45k bracket will definitely find reasons why they shouldn't shell out an extra 10-15k for an M3.

The new M3 will debut at next September's Frankfurt auto show. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that BMW M boss Ulrich Bruhnke confirmed the date while at the launch of the M6 convertible in southern France last September. "The Frankfurt International Motor Show is so important [to BMW] we must show it there," he said. The fourth-generation M3, based on the E90 3 Series Coupe, will be powered by a four-liter V8 producing about 400 horsepower.

Having finally been able to look at the E70 in the metal, they did some weird shit to the shifter :? It's not an SMG like i though it would be based on the shifter. It's a regular automatic with some funky ergonomics. I haven't had a chance to sit around and play with any of it yet though.

Well, we have a source here saying that the car will debut it at Frankfurt.
Like it was discussed above, if it's going to be at Geneva, it's going to be a "Concept M3", like they did with the M5. No real point to it except for telling people that they should write their checks (cheques) now. So the production version will be at Frankfurt.

The article I posted by Roundel didn't mention anything about a concept car. . . it just mentioned that the M3 will debut in Germany at Frankfurt because it is important to BMW.
So yes the concept car might debut in Geneva, but it looks like the production version will debut in Frankfurt, as the article pointed out.

Now that is interesting indeed. . . I wonder if only the M3 will get it or if the Sedan will get updated to the Coupe front end as well? Maybe this is one of those Life Cycle Impluse(s) that Z was talking about?

i'm not really sure about this... but weren't their plans to make all BMW coupes even-numbered cars (like the 6-series instead of a 5-series coupe)? probably the coupe was initially slated as the 4-series (hence looking different) but since that plan was scrapped, they have to make the sedan and coupe look similar :?
