Audi Quattro Driving Experience 2006, edit: vid up

I just got back from "Golsfjellet" where Audi have their Quattro driving experience every year. They set up different courses on a big frozen lake. We came up on thursday evening and after check-in at the hotel we had some people from Audi tell us about all the new models and engines and prices... bla,bla,bla. But after we had a Swedish instructor giving us a lecture on weight distribution, understeer, oversteer and Quattro. The next morning we started by dividing all the people in two groups. Two people in every car, 5 1.8T Quattro Avant and 5 2.0T Quattro Avant.

The next day we started out on a small oval track, learning the ESP and trying to provoke it in turns at 50km/h. Then it was the same procedure without ESP,downshifting and braking, trying to shift the weight forward to get front grip. Then we drive on a "hourglass-shape" track, trying to get the tail out i S-shape turns, and flooring it to drift all the way through. Then we moved on to a brake-exercise. We started driving up to 75 km/h and into a lane of cones, then flooring the brakes and driving past an obstacle. As you may know, Audis are equipped with "brake-assist" and you really have to use your weight and punch the brakes to get it to work 100%.

Then we moved on to slalom. It was a 4 turn slalom, then a drift-hairpin and back 4 turns again. You really had to time the throttle and steering to get the slide effect you need to catch next turn. After this we moved on tho the open course. It was a 3km long course of straights and turns. It was a really entertaining course with no worries to run off. We managed to stay on the track at all time, but about 50% of the cars and drivers ran off and needed to get pulled out by tractor.

In the end as always there was a surprise. This year it was the new RS4 with rally-spikes. As we entered, the Audi factory driver got ready to floor it around the ice corse. And oh my god, that was intense. I have never seen such driving, he was just incredible. But the car was also incredible. The sound especially was intense.

It was pretty wild I tell ya. dissapointingly I think you need to drive with the windows down, because you really don't hear that much of the engine inside as you would hope. Outside it sounds insane, but inside it is a bit to well insulated.. :? Nevertheless it was fantastic, and it is a famtastic car!

I've to say, I never drove on a snow-ice-track like this :oops: , although there are some events in my area every year. I have to apply for a course asap!

I have often heard that on ice those rally spiked tires offer better traction than slicks on asphalt and somehow I think that claim might be true.

I can belive that. The side forces are incredible. I have never before felt such a quick and rough change of direction. :P

While I was talking to my friend today, I remembered one more thing. For those of you who have yet to see the RS4 in person, those exhaust-tips are damn much bigger than they look in pictures! That was one of the things that surprised me the most about the exterior. :D
