View Full Version : whats your stranger routine?
i try to say hi or hello when i see the person make eye contact with me. i think its good to just pass a few words or whatnot. usually people respond back. so whats your stranger routine? do you react also with a smile and exchange a few words here and there...or just business walk fast, avoid eye contact with no expression?

...or just business walk fast, avoid eye contact with no expression? That's what I go for, usually. I'm a tad antisocial, though....(especially when I have a girlfriend).

I do too. I mean, why not? It doesn't hurt you to at least greet them.

I give them the finger and if they're lucky I won't mug them.....
Nah, I usually smile and if I get eye contact then I'll say "hi" or "howdy partner". :P

Smile and hello, not really one for much smalltalk past that if I am in company, being a couple (married) there is someone else to do the chitchat sometimes... depends on 'who' the stranger is. In the sewing store my wife will chit chat, in the Game store it will be me, etc. If I am alone I am much more likely to chat to strangers, but alone in a city (away on business is the usual example) I will go to the hotel or a sports bar and watch some soccer and chat away to people.
yea its cool how majority of the people are polite and will exchange a few words and whatnot, but then they have some cold hearted people who dont even respond to you. for example if im out have a smoke break from work its usually next to the front door and i will greet people/open the door and alot of people just walk past you as if your not even alive, not even thankyou for opening the door. some will make comments like hey your gonna die with that one day or some wise comment and i usually respond back with something wise and few laughs go by...but like i said some people are just cold hearted and dont give a flying fuck..usually the cheap assholes.

If I make eye contact with a girl on campus I usually as quick as possible put my head down to the pavement and whisper "please don't look at me, please don't look at me" to myself until she passes by. Then I look up and thank the good lord that it didn't become ackward for me.
I will look out the drivers window at the VTEC with a wing and yell out "Are you farging kidding me?"
But it doesn't matter - they can't hear me anyway... ;)

Just smile and knock my head a bit. Saying "hi" to complete stranger will not be understandable by normal people on the street cause you say it only if you know the person or you wanna to start talking to him/her.
With chicks its really hard cause I always miss if they smile and its too late thinking "damn it ARMAN you f@cked it up again"

if I'm in work hours and in the building of some client I smile, say hello, good morning, etc. You know... you have to be polite when you're a "salesman"
if not... just avoid eye contact if it some guy

Like most of you .. I give nearly everyone the head nod and a smile and if I get a response I say Hi.
I think it depends a lot on which country you are in and what's the custom there.
I found that in Asia you tend to avoid looking at anyone thinking it is going to be panhandler or worse a curous, chatty person. I dont know if you have been to S E Asia but people are naturally curious there - "where are you from .. where do you work .. Are you married .. how many kids ... and so on" - hence the avoid the eyes routine to make sure you get to where you want in time. That's just the norm but people not from there find it very jarring. :)
In the US there is lots more greeting involved - particularly in the Southern part of it. People from NY, Philly are too busy to talk (or pretend to be) but the people from the 'burbs are nice. The people from LA suck but the rest of California are pretty nice.
My memory of Europe dates back to a month's vacation there in 1986. I generally found that people were very reserved to begin with but warmed up once they got to know you. I dont know if this still holds true anymore if you are visitor from another country.

I lived in Singapore for sometime, and I used to greet my neighbours. They never asked me random questions, except for maybe "Where do you go to school?", or something similarly mundane. I've been to numerous Asian countries. In mainland China, they people to ignore you, but in Hong Kong, some people will greet you when you walk by. Even the motorcycle cops say "Good Morning", in the morning, when they ride by. Malaysians and Thais, as you say, are generally quite talkative, and inquisitive.

I work as a basketball referee and it's always kinda weird, because you greet and act chummy with the coaches, knowing that you'll probably end up making a disagreeable decision.

Mommy told me never to speak to strangers
No one says hello in London, so i dont either. Unless some old lady in my neighbourhood looks up and gives me that frail smile which says "i could fall over and die any second". In that case i do smile and say hello.
hahaha jay, i may have giggled a bit on that reply..
