Exclusive Sneak Peek: Audi's 2009 A4
By: Jason Teller

Audi will show the B8 A4 in Frankfurt in September
Sources at Audi have confirmed to AudiWorld that the next generation Audi A4 will make its worldwide debut in the fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Completely redesigned both inside and out, the B8 A4 will in many ways be similar to the recently introduced B8 A5 and S5 coupés.

With the new A4 just a little over four months away we wanted to give readers a good idea of what to expect inside and out. Matt Daniels has also prepared three exclusive renders of the 2009 A4 (sedan, Avant and S4) which represent our best guess at what the final product will look like.

First and foremost the new A4 will utilize Audi's up-and-coming MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform) technology which will form the basis of not only the A4 and A5, but the also soon-to-be-revealed Q5 crossover SUV, next-generation A6, the as-yet-to-be-announced A7 and even the next A8. MLP allows Audi to place the engine and transmission further back behind the axle and helps stretch the wheelbase without lengthing the car's exterior dimensions. Less front overhang means the 2009 A4 will be less front-heavy than its predecessor, a problem which has dogged most Audis for some time.

The B8 A4 will only be about one inch longer than the current A4, although the longer wheelbase will make it appear to be a relatively bigger car. Front and rear overhang each decrease by nearly three inches. Thanks to its available next generation quattro all-wheel drive (rear-biased with a 40/60 split) and MLP architechture the new A4 will handle significantly better than any of the previous generation A4s before it.

The new A4 will also get something that its A5 brethren unfortunately did not - LED tail lamps. We have been told that the development cycle on the A5 was such that tail lamp designs had to be locked-in before the more cost effective LED models to be used on the A4 could be finalized. The A4 will also include headlight-integrated LED daytime running lights as an option, while the S4 will get them as a standard feature.

Inside the new A4 it will be more of the same from Audi; world class interior treatments will grace the A4 and each of its variants. The cabin will be very similar to the A5's with a more raked (and slightly driver's side skewed) center console, an all new climate control and audio center stack and more distinctive gauges. The driver will be able to adjust the armrest both up-and-down and by sliding front to back.

Interior seating comfort will be largely unchanged from the previous A4, with the exception of the rear seats where at least an inch of additional legroom will be available due to the wheelbase changes.

Powerplants for North America will be standard Audi fare with a 2.0-liter TFSI, a 3.2-liter V6 and the 4.2-liter FSI V8 in the S4 version. Expect to see a new 1.8-liter TFSI offering for Europe as well as both 4 and 6-cylinder TDI variants. Available transmissions will include a 6-speed manual, multitronic and Audi's newest S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox.

Audi is being very tight lipped about exact A4 variants beyond the standard sedan offering. Looking at the current generation A4, Audi produces the A4 sedan, A4 Avant, A4 Cabriolet, S4 sedan, S4 Avant, S4 Cabriolet and RS4. Things will definitely change, but the final details are unknown at this time.

We can safely speculate that the A4 and S4 Cabriolets go away in favor of a A5 and S5 Cabriolets, respectively. We have also read at least one article saying that the A4 and S4 Avants will be replaced by the upcoming Audi Q5, although we hear that this is simply not the case. The Q5 will be marketed as an SUV, which is clearly different than the A4 / S4 Avant. Last, a four-door A4 Sportback has been mentioned and this remains a weak possibility as a 2010 or beyond model.

The 2009 A4 will be available in Europe by spring 2008 with general availability in North America later that fall. No pricing has been confirmed, but consumers should not expect to see much in the way of price increases. One things is certain: buyers will be getting more car for the money with the next generation A4.

Oh yes, the next generation B8 A4 will be shown in 2007 and go on sale in 2008, according to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. The same chassis, will be used for the new A5, which is basically an A4 coupe with 2+2 seating. This will be shown in 2006 and go on sale in 2007. This picture doesn't really show it, but the wheels are mounted much further forward than before, giving it a stance that is similar to the BMW 3-Series.The interior will be stunning and set new standards for the class. Expect more rear passenger legroom and excellent driver ergonomics. New engines will debut including both common-rail diesels and direct engine gasoline engines.

Personally I think the new B8 A4 looks awesome with the S-Line package. http://www.rs6.com/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Ok, they better do an RS version then, because if the S-line already has flares like that, then the RS version will look like a blade runner touring car.

Hmmm... 2008? Wicked. That means an RS version come 2010... lots of time to save up. :)

Looks good IMO - but I'd like to see the interior... which is the stronger point of Audi lately! :D

BTW, the RS4 Avant hasn't been releasen yet - and the B8 is said to be shown in 2007?? How long we'll have to wait for the next generation RS4 then?? :?

Yeah, I know, it seems like Audi updates their models on a 4 year cycle. Which is amazingly fast. I know that BMW does a 7 year cycle and after the 4th year they have a facelift.

Another lazy design. Looks like an overweight versions of the B7 A4.

THANK YOU!!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one. It looks pretty good, but whereas the current car has nice taught lines, this B8 looks like it's achieved some middle-aged weight around the middle. The character line that runs along the bodyside shouldn't dip in the middle like that, makes the car look heavy, and loose rather than nice and tight like the B7 and B5

Bernardo

i cant see nothing like the 300C in this new A4..

Anyways..I can't tell how dissapointed I am..the old (current) A4 looks soooo good...much better than the C-Klasse and 3-series..Don't get me wrong..I like the A5 design..but It should only belong to the A5 itself...the A4 should have a whole diffrent design.

:(

martin100
05-29-2007, 01:54 PM
As i said i think it´s a great idea to base the A4s design on the A5s. Why not? As long as it isn´t exactly the same and one can tell the difference it´s fine since the A5 is a beauty.

mynameisnigel

There is definitely something wrong with these photoshop illustrations of the supposed-to-be next A4 B8. These show nothing more than a four-door A5 which I am certain are far away from what the actual A4/B8 is going to be. I sincerely hope that AUTOBILD-Hueckfeldt's illustrations are closer to reality (note that these also include a Sportback version of the A4 - see Autobild's website)
(NB: sorry for not including the links. I cannot apparently post such since I am new to this forum... silly).

In any case, it doesn't make sense to build and sell a look-alike of the A5. While it is certain that both cars will share the same B8 chassis, the similitude is probably going to stop there.

By the way, there are also illustrations on AutoBild's website about an A5 four-door Avant which look quite similar to the supposed-A4 illustrations posted here.

Umm, probably need to refresh your memory but their cars back in the 80s through the 90s weren't really all that great.

The last generation B7 A4 looks a million times better than this Flame Surface wannabe. Given that BMW/Chris Bangle & Company is not necessarily a good thing to emulate.

I don't think so, because they're boring ! :P

Some manufactures make cars with a design that you rather love it or hate it, others, most like VW, Audi and specially Mercedes, make cars that no one can say that are ugly! That's why most of them don't easily excite me.

^^^^Thanks buddy for the picture, yep man Audi AG have played the safe card here with the new B8 A4...but I like it and I can't wait to see the next S4. :D

About your leak pix I found this:

"Images of Audi’s next-gen A4 sedan have turned up on Dutch forum AutoWeek.nl (the post has since been removed), less than two weeks ahead of the car’s debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. As the image reveals, the new A4’s styling draws heavily from the larger A5 coupe and could pass as a four-door variant of the recently launched coupe. The car measures in at 4.7m long and 1.83m wide. Under the new sheet-metal is Audi’s latest Modular Design Platform, which means the new B8 A4 should have better handling characteristics than the outgoing version thanks to improved weight distribution. The new petrol engine lineup will start with a 1.8L TFSI developing 160hp and top out with a 260hp 3.2L V6 FSI rounding up the range. The TDI diesel range kicks off with a 140hp 2.0L, followed by a 190hp 2.7L V6 and a 3.0L V6 churning out 240hp and 500Nm (369lb-ft) of torque."

Scheduled to make its world debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, we can finally show you official pictures of Audi’s all-new A4 sedan. At first glance, the car could be mistaken for its predecessor but on closer inspection we can see that it features shorter overhangs up front as well as a longer bonnet and wheelbase. This in effect gives the car more road presence and a much tougher stance when compared with the model it replaces.

Below the new sheetmetal is where Audi engineers have focused most of their attention. The car’s differential has switched places with the clutch (or torque converter for autos), which has made it possible to move the front axle forward by 154mm. This also allowed engineers to move the location of the engine further behind the front axle, giving the car improved weight distribution, which in turn led to better dynamics. Despite sticking with conventional steel-construction for the body the new A4 tips the scales at just 1,410kg for the 1.8L TFSI model.

The car’s suspension system is totally new and is comprised mostly of light-weight aluminum. Other technical highlights include Audi’s new drive select feature, which can vary response from the engine, gearbox, steering and suspension to suit the driver’s unique preferences. The A4 also gets Audi’s speed-sensitive dynamic steering and fully adjustable damping control of the shock-absorbers.

The new A4 range will initially be introduced with a choice of five engines, their power outputs ranging from 143hp (105kW) to 265hp (195kW). The four-cylinder petrol engine, like the diesels, is turbocharged, and both types of engine have direct fuel injection. Though no DSG gearbox is available as yet, the A4 will still get three different transmission options. These include a conventional six-speed manual, a tiptronic auto and Audi’s multitronic CVT unit.

Until the new S4 and RS4 arrive, power-nuts will have to rely on the 3.2L FSI V6 as the most powerful engine in the A4 range. This motor develops 265hp (195kW) and a wide-spread 330Nm (244ft-lb) of torque all the way from 3,000 to 5,000rpm. It accelerates the A4 3.2 FSI quattro with manual gearbox from a standstill to 100km/h in only 6.2 seconds and allows it to reach an electronically controlled 250km/h top speed. The petrol V6 is joined by the smaller 1.8L TFSI, which develops 160hp (118kW) and a torque of 250Nm (185lb-ft) between 1,500 and 4,500rpm. When equipped with the manual box, the 1.8L A4 accelerates to the ton in 8.6 seconds and maxes out at 225km/h. The new turbocharger is a major improvement on the unit used on the outgoing model. At an engine speed of 2,000rpm the turbo sees the engine output 10% more torque than the older unit and 30% quicker as well.

Diesel fans get treated to three new engines, 240hp (176kW) 3.0L V6 with a peak torque of no less than 500Nm (369lb-ft) arriving from as early as 1,500rpm and hanging around until 3,000rpm. It needs only 6.1 seconds to accelerate to 100km/h from a standing start, and has a top speed of 250km/h. Joining the 3.0L unit is a smaller 2.7L V6 diesel with 190hp (140kW) and 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque on tap, as well as four-cylinder 2.0L TDI. This engine has the lowest output of the new A4 range, developing just 143hp (105kW) and 320Nm (236lb-ft) of torque. All the diesel offerings outperform the new Euro 5 exhaust emission limits thanks to improved thermodynamics and the latest particulate filters.

Inside, occupants are treated to more generous legroom than the previous model thanks to the new car’s 2808mm wheelbase. Rear seat passengers get an extra 36mm of knee room, while head and shoulder room have also been increased. Seats are fully adjustable, but electronic control remains an option as does the cushion heater. The cabin is highlighted with either aluminum or wood trim, and the sporty S models come with a unique black interior including the roof-lining. The first cars should hit showrooms in Europe by the end of November with the US and other markets penciled in for early next year.

^I'm actually liking it now! I just wished it had that same curved beltline from the R8 and A5.

The picture of the silver car does the A4 a lot more justice IMO. Something about the red car turned me off. But I agree with Dani, the new C class Merc is fantastic. I'd have that one.

Very nice car, even if I'd wait for the Avant.
Nothing against the C Class, but this A4--interior is at least one class above the Merc.

hmmm from some angles it looks pretty good but from most it's the same look all audis have had for years, which is really starting to bore me... exterior-wise i think the C-class looks a LOT better (in sport guise), and the 3-series better except from the rear...
Interior is ofcourse a whole different story, the Merc has an interior thats undoubtedly of high quality but just looks pretty boring, the 3-series has an ok interior of good quality, but Audi does what's expected of them again, easily the best interior in their class...

Just as the Audi A4 makes its first public appearance at tomorrow's Frankfurt Motor Show, spy photographers were lucky to get a first glimpse of the Avant wagon variant testing outside the Ingolstadt factory late last week. Expectedly it maintains the sedan’s design philosophy and features the firm’s typical sloping roof line. Engines will be taken over from the sedan, and of course the car will be available in both, front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. Audi has announced the Avant will arrive at the dealers in late summer 2008.

With Audi’s new A4 range officialy released, attention now turns to the performance S range, which should be making its arrival by mid next year. These latest spy shots reveal a completely undisguised prototype of the new car, which can clearly be seen sporting a new set of bumpers and a small bootlid spoiler. The only other visual clue that this is in fact the new S4 is the quad exhaust tailpipes residing in the rear diffuser.

Power will come from the familiar 4.2L FSI V8 engine, but expect to see slightly more than the 340hp (253kW) found in the current car. Customers will be able to choose between either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, and drive will be sent to all four wheels via quattro AWD as standard. Audi may also debut its new sport differential in the S4, a new system that can send torque to the individual rear wheels almost instantly. This should see handling improve dramatically over the current car.

The next stop is the new RS4, which we’re likely to see towards the end of next year. The previous model surprised everyone with its handling and power characteristics and the new model should be more of the same.

Does anyone know why they went back to 1.8 liters as the standard for the A4? I thought that Audi had graduated to 2.

The 1.8t is for gas saving purposes and the U.S. is not getting it, we're still using the 2.0T. The power output might be raised but it can't conflict with the 3.2's power output. There's too many rumors about engines for the U.S.

They should take a cue from the current A6's boot/trunk.

The 3rd fog light on the S4 is propably an optic device for the "Audi Lane assist" system.
