Welcome to Sofia - candidate to host the XXII
Olympic and Paralympic Gam
Sofia is the capital and the biggest town in Bulgaria. It is founded more than 7000 years ago by an ancient Trace tribe of the Serdi and thus its first name Serdika. During the centuries it changes its name to Triaditza and Sredetz, until the 14th century when it gets it current name Sofia (which means wisdom).
Sofia's geographic location is unique and strategically important. The town is situated in the middle of the Balkan peninsula, which makes Sofia one of the most important transport and communication centers on the Balkans.
Sofia is situated in the West of Bulgaria, at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain, at 550 m above the sea level. The capital of Bulgaria is the main administrative, industrial and transport center of the country. The environs of the town are extremely rich in natural resources, cultural and historical landmarks and prospects for recreation and tourism.
In 1900 the Town Council approves the emblem of the capital as well as its motto "Grows but does not grow old", which are preserved until today.
Since 1992, the official Day of Sofia is the 17th of September in honor of St. Martyr Sophia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Love.
