View Full Version : Should XBox be pingable on a the LAN?
If an XBox (a non-chipped stock XBox) is on the LAN, and online with XBox Live! (proving working a network) - should you be able tp ping the XBox's IP? (set to static IP)

It sounds logical that you would. Cant you ping any active IP address?

your x-box ip is determined by your router... or if its the only item plugged into the modem...then its simply the modems addy.
you can see your x-box ip one of a few ways...
easiest is in your browser, type 192.168.1.1 and your password... (usually no username... and the password is something like admin) and you can see which ones are active... and you can ping your xbox all day long, if you so choose
Yeah - but I chose to static IP the XBox - XBox is online, but ping is not being responded to. :(

are you pinging it internally or externally?
If internally then the ip should be 192.168.x.x, do you know what its ip is?
Is the xbox connected in anyway to your pc at all? If not, then you'll have to ping it externally.... i.e sending data from your pc, out onto the web and back in.

;) Kinda know the ropes.. :P
LAN at home is a routed/wireless jobbie with 3 servers, 4 PC's 3 Laptops, a PS2, a stock XBox and a chipped one ;)
This is the crux of the matter - the XBox has been static'ed to x.x.x.103 - but it's like the host with x.x.x.103 is not acknowledging ICMP ;)
The modded Xie on x.x.x.105 is real hapy to respond to ICMP and FTP ...
I am just a little flumaxxed as to why the stock XBox is not visible by other devices on the LAN - and we know the XBox is networked, it is able to get to onto XBLive!... :P

How are you pinging it? What does it find when you use ipconfig/all? Everything but the xbox?

ipconfig/all is a local command...
I get no response from the ping of the XBox static IP.
The only logical explanation is that th IP I am pinging is not the XBox, but it has to be - it's the static IP I set the XBox to.

Easy Guess.. If microsoft was smart they shut down ICMP as its a major security risk and xbox has no need for it. There is no ICMP on my lan.. Id be alarmed if I saw a box responding to a ping.. sign that I left a port open I shouldnt have and Ive been hacked.
^^ on the LAN that's just paranoid ;) :P

Yeah - pathetic, isn't it? ;) :P
looks like when the XBox is simply connected to Live! it is pingable, but when connected to a game it isn't.
Interesting.
Now I am trying to set up an XLink Forza game - and this is not going too well. :(
