View Full Version : Jan 20th - Porsche 996 Turbo indepth
This was a very quick indepth actually. Partially planned, but in the end not really much time (ence why the pics in the first location are far from perfect with other cars in the way :bah: ) The car is still a stunner after some years and I enjoyed the ride a lot! The 6 points racing harness adds to the experience for sure, as do the racing seats! As you can see in one of the pics, there is even the little gadget used in case your stomach has enough :D
Even if we didn't really come close to its full potential (following the black Modena which had summer tires ;)), I am sure on full boost this car must scare the hell out of you!
This is no way like 99% of the 996TT we can see around town here. They usually have the comfort seats and are used as daily drives, sure, but mostly in town..
This one has racing seats, racing harness, roll cage, not-so-stock exhaust, it is lowered (quite a lot!) and probably a couple more things I forgot :D ... and it does LOT of trackdays! It has 230'000 km on the clock and got a new engine 10k ago! The owner uses it every day to go to work and he is quite often on track during summer. Also during winter actually since tomorrow there will be a snow driving "track" day and he'll be there with us :). The Nordschleife sticker isn't there just to be cool: the car lapped that infamous loop countless times :)
For the first time we tried some traveling shots, but it's not as easy as it might seem in the magazines if you don't have an airstrip where you can use the boot of a car to shoot like you should. On open road you can't do that, and to pop out of the window isn't that easy actually! LOL
Anyway, enjoy the pics, there are a total of 27 high-res you can find by clicking the previews

Wow - This guy is a great man. Posts on alot of Porsche forums and is really helpful in every situation. His car is awesome and he definately uses it to full potential. I've seen one photo of his car window deep in snow :lol:

Very nice, a shame the car is that colour but with the snowy background it still looks very cool! I love the track-inspired mods he has done, and its handy to be strapped in tightly with the rush you feel from those turbos! :shock:
SO what method did you use for the travellig shots, out of the window of the BMW?
A great bunch of pics, thanks.
Out of the window of an E39 M5 or B5 RS4, can't remember which one in this shot.. and you can imagine how nice it is on your face and hands when it's around 0 C outside :D

A common problem when shooting in snow, as the camera tries to get everything to 18% gray. Underexposing by 1 stop should cure the problem next time.

Ahhh...nothing like a a photosession with a dirty car :D Although the car looks pretty boring in the silver colour, I prefer it in red or navy. cheers for the pictures TT.

To be honest i like your pictures but i think you can do better, just look at the RS4 :shock: :D
Thanks for the comments guys! Here is another picture of this sweet TT in action:
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8827/tt9uz.th.jpg (http://img81.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt9uz.jpg)
bloeb, the RS4 was by far the best performance I could produce since I launched the indepth section.. it's always tricky to end up with some "original" pics, but of course when you spend 4 hours with a car, it really helps.
IMO the pics with the TT into the woods are "different" enough to make it worth to be posted ;)

Well... :oops: :oops: Thanks for the nice comments, guys!
And thanks a lot and congrats to TT for his impressive work. I hope he'll be able to join us to our next trip to the Nürburgring this spring... ;) (I'd be more than happy to give him a ride for a few rounds around the Nordschleife!)
Greetings,

TT, as you know I love sportscars in the snow. So thanks a lot for the pics. And thanks for freezing your hands of, cause the shots taken out of a driving car look great IMO :D My favourite pic is the one of the 996TT lurking behind the tree.
@ Pierre: welcome to JW. It seems you like driving your 996TT a lot, and not only as a daily drive but also on the track. Do you often go to the Nordschleife? If you've been there during one of the weekends in 2005, it's possible I've some action shots of you. I'll have a look into my NS archive ;)

Excellent pictures again. Thanks TT for the great work. That car looks awesome.
Pierre, welcome to JW. Glad to see that your car isn't just a garage queen but a daily driven beauty queen :D.
The 996 has always been one of my favorite Porsches, love the intergrated front headlamps that departs from the round eyes, very comtemporary. Too bad in the 997 it went back to the round lamps. Excellent choice on a car :!:
Thanks for sharing it with us!!!

I've been so free to edit some of your pics, as they could use a little more 'punch' IMHO:

LOL, no problem and they look cool, but ppl already moan sometimes I go to heavy with my editing and yours while hyper cool are just too "artistic / unnatural" I fear. that said, I love them!
Oh, and remember, no direct link from imageshack

Haha, yeah, you're right. I tend to see photography as an art while most people just want a realistic view of desirable cars. 8)

Woops, sorry, my bad, copied the wrong links. :oops: Thanks for fixing!
Well as you say, there are indeed two different approaches to car photography (and photography in a general way obviously). The is no "right" or "wrong" one of course but I think most ppl prefer indeed a realistic point of view instead of an artistic one..
But well, those edited pics actually made me wonder I should have somewhere a section with artistic pictures, just one every now and then when worth it... but to be honest, I don't have the time/patience/skill to end up with acceptable results :P

I'd say go, in the Photography-forum for example. I'd be more than happy to give you some Photoshop-tips. :)
Oh sorry, I mean an "artistic - wallpapers" section on my website actually.

I see that my edit was good enough to appear in your signature! :lol:
Yup, you gave me the idea to change my signature format.. so I can switch it every 5 days instead of daily (which lately I just forgot to do).. every new update a new signature showing a pic or detail from it ;)

i'd appreciate that tremendously as a PS noob here :)
personally, those modified shots are marvelous IMO... sure, they take a lot more time to edit... but there is so much deeper color... as if its sunset w/out the drawbacks of low light... and dont ruin the shots of Turbo... but well... you need some good shots to begin with ;)

I also like the modified pics. They look great, but I wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

definately a warm welcome to JW :) your car is a wonderful choice
its great to hear that your turbo has such modifications... all too few are taken to the track IMO.
if you have the time to answer...
what are your impressions of the car, before, and after your various upgrades to the car? 8)
Maybe not totally up to date, but this could already tell you something about his impressions:

@TT :
Thank you infinitely TT for this superb Porsche 996 Turbo indepth. http://www.rs6.com/smilies/thumbsup.gif
Taking the fact that I live in a Nordic country, I always appreciated enormously pictures with snow and especially when it's with an awesome 996 turbo. :good:
@Pierre_ch
Welcome to JW Pierre ! http://www.rs6.com/smilies/wave.gif
Congrats for your nice 996 turbo. That's cool that you use your lovely 996 turbo for racing and for daily use. This prove once again the Porsche turbo is the most practical supercars. When hamlet was here in Québec, he spoke to me a lot about you and your Porsche, but especially of your driving skills on board your Porsche and also your karting sessions with the Asphalte.ch club. http://www.rs6.com/smilies/drive.gif
That's cool, because after having seen some web link concerning your car I remembered that I had already several pictures, wallpapers and videos of your cars. http://www.rs6.com/smilies/nutchy.gif

@dani_d_mas:
I did a few VLN races and the 24h race last year (not with the Turbo!), but this year might be a bit quieter. However, I'll definitely go to the N'ring again, just for fun. I'll be there mid-May (10-14, I think) for sure. With the Turbo. :)
@Schwalbe:
huh!... small world! I just hope hamlet didn't exagerate too much... ;)

Welcome to JW Pierre, it's very nice to have another swiss porsche driver in here. it makes me happy to read that you're a daily driver and have so many km's done so far. so i don't have to take to much care on mine with the mileage :lol:
maybe we'll met us once at a swiss porsche meet or somewhere else :wink:
And maybe one day we'll put your Porsche's indepth beside Pierre's ;)
