My buddy purchased a new 2006 M5. Against his better judgement. He owned a 540 sport before and knew the horrible service. But the advertised speed of the New M5 lured him.
I few weeks ago BMNA sent him a letter letting him know there is a problem with the Vanos Oil Line leaking. He called his dealer and they told him there is nothing they could do about it. And not to worry. Wait until it is an official recall. So he went with this advise.
He slowly broke it in and had the silly 1200 service done. At that point he asked them to fix the line problem and the dealer said don't worry about it. Well the car is was running and he was driving it hard last night and BOOM! oil everywhere!!! Line burst. He was righjt around the corner and he was able to pull it into his garage. This morning there was a puddle of oil in his garage. He called the dealer(Princeton) and they are sending a flatbed over. Now here is the funny part. They tell him the new hose is on 3-4 week b/o. My buddy went nuts and all of sudden they claimed they could get it overnight! Next funny thing was they had no loaner for him. The dealer said they were out of them(I wonder why!!!??)
He went bananas and the dealer finally agreed to rent him a Enterprise Rent a Junk. Funny, buy a car for 92k, get a 20k rental to drive around in. Sorry, I love the active seats, but obviously BMW will never have their sh*t together like the other dealers. Infiniti, Jaguar and MB all bend over backwards to serve their customers. BMW could seriously care less!!

 it's always someone's buddy.
I highly, highly doubt they told him not to worry about it. As usual something got left out in the transfer from the source to this retard
This Service Measure is only about 1-2 weeks old, and there was no ay the dealer could have known that the part was on backorder. Give me a few minutes and i'll post the bulletin here.
*edit* Ok, i can't find the bulletin so i think it was just a mesage from BMWNA about it when i heard about this, so i think the bulletin will be following within the next few days, i hope. I'll do some checking tomorrow.
Sounds about right - the car is overpriced, overhyped and sold by BMW North America - not BMW Germany ;)

>Watches RC come in from left field<
BMWNA has to translate the info they get from Germany and post it on the DCSnet system. They also have to set the marketing strategy for the US instead of the rest of the world.
The only thing NA is having to do with the M5 is the development of the 6 spd manual box for the North American market.
Looks like the m5 is about to go the way of the M3... blowing up as they com off the boat ;)
Technology for technology ake is never a good idea... resale value for this model will be in the crapper if these fail like this - will be HUGE bills for out of warranty repairs.. ;)

nah. It's just one steel braided hose that has to handle 140 BAR oil pressure to the VANOS units  By the time this thing is out of warranty, the problems will have been ironed out.
And none of this is tech for techs sake. maybe individually it seems like it, but once it's all together, you see it's purpose.
besides, it's not like Chevy hasn't ever had it's problems  as i heard it from a tech in AZ: "If it's a GM and it doesn't leak oil, then it doesn't run"

they wont change the oil line, until it fails,
even though the dealer know alot of car have this problem, and will be having this problem

It will turn into a Service Measure or recall to replace it on the next visit if the probem gets really bad.
They might update it from the steel braid to the full metal line. Which would explain the 3-4 week backorder.

As JC said in the test between the S2000 and the TR6 (one of his recent DVDs):
Not one... not one VTEC system has ever gone wrong.
Now I am of course assuming that the 140bar oil flow in question is at that pressure for the VANOS system... I know that VTEC works on oil pressure to engage the fun cam

I remember I drove up to Berkeley's Weatherford dealership in my 4Runner, couldn't get any help at all. When I drove up in my M3, the sales people were mauling me to trade up. . . bullshit.
Now now. Let's stay on track. All sales people are slimy and shallow. Let's not lump them in with the serice dept. Besides, it's not like California is the best place to not be judged by the car you drive :P
 as i heard it from a tech in AZ: "If it's a GM and it doesn't leak oil, then it doesn't run"
See - it's always "some one I know"... ;)
The one thing I can tell you that the LSx series of engines does NOT do is leak any oil.. at all.. ;)

I always believed it, just never heard it put so right :P :D
You can't tell me that the Corvette hasn't had it's issues though. As long as the OBD regulations get tighter, emisisons control technology is going to get more complicated and therefore troublesome.
I solved all emmisions issues with overlap... ;)

This doesn't surprise me. My friend's dad is a car nut. He has 2 BMW's and 2 Benzes. Their 330i went in for a service 5k after the warranty was up, and the dealer came back telling him that there were some things wrong with the car. They wanted something on the order of 7k to fix it. He went apeshit and ended up paying 3k.
Thought they gave him an X3 as a rental.

^ That sucks. I don't suppose there is any way he could have upgraded to the 7/100 warranty? No car, let alone a 330i, should need 7k worth of work at 53000 miles.
The one thing I can tell you that the LSx series of engines does NOT do is leak any oil.. at all.. ;)
They'll burn a little bit on a long run though, say from FW to El Paso...
My TA never leaked a drop though. The car always felt like something was about to snap or fall off, but it never let me down :good:
^^ He said leak... not burn.. ;)
My car used to burn/use a quart per 500 miles driven... but then again I was thrashing the living piss (aka oil ;)) out of the car - literally - the car has been amazing;y reliable considering just how hard I have driven it.
Anything that has gone through 3 sets of rotors, 4 sets of tyres, 2 engines and countless gallons of gas and quarts of oil and still starts first time and daily drives without a fuss can't be that bad... ;) Pity BMW can't make a car this tough... :P

Ummm. . . okay. Sure.
I have never had any problems with my cars. Nothing to this extent anyways. Of course, I get a few sensor codes here and there because of failed sensors, but engine and tranny has been bullit-proof. <Knock on wood>.
Although my old E30 325i does have a few drops of oil now and then.

It's interesting to read about how crap BMW's service is in NA, while across the pond in the UK, they are pretty much immaculate.
Crap service is a unique and character-building feature of all North American based car makers.. ;)

Maybe the owner picked up a diesel fuel pump by mistake at their last visit to the gas station?

that jsut goes back o the dumbass tech then. At most, all you'd replace is the fuel filter.

I don't think the problem was emissions related, but I'm not sure. I think the first thing they'd go for in that case would be the cat. I know I've gone through two already though, granted it was a result of my modifications. As far as I know they haven't had the car smogged yet so they wouldn't be required to change anything.
Emissions stuff in CA is a giant pain in the ass. I am not allowed to have any modifications on my car not CARB approved, and just about nothing is. The CVC is a labyrinth of crap. Even a cat-back exhaust is illegal.

I know the Bimmers in CA have aluminum fuel tanks as opposed to the plastic tanks everywhere else due to the evaporative reuirements, but AFAIK they have been trouble free.
The modification bullshit is one reason i don't want to move there. That and your dickhead cops. The list goes on, in fact i think i have more reasons to stay away from cali then i have not to have kids
transam- yeah, my foreman's sis-in-law just dumped a tank of iesel into her saturn over the weekend. they pumped out the diesel and it ran fine.
I think one of the tricks years ago was to mix like a half gallon of diesel into the tank to clean out the combustion chambers. Kind of a poor man's premium

 Yea the mod stuff is bullshit, you just have to be covert about it. I realized two years ago that the reason I got pulled over and checked for mods was the way I drove, and since then I've been a little wiser.
In police-heavy areas I go to 5th gear even going 30 mph. That'll make it quiet enough that you avoid notice. And right now I need to avoid notice.
That I recall they fine you up to 2000 dollars for voiding your car's smog equipment and modifying your car. They've basically lumped street racing and car modifying into the same basket to give enormous fines.
And yes, we have bastard cops.
That's also interesting about the Al tanks. I didn't know that one.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action: S85 Replace VANOS High Pressure Line
MODEL
E60 M5 with S85 produced up to 11/22/05
SITUATION
The VANOS high pressure line may start to leak engine oil around the flexible hose.
A Service Action will be conducted on all affected vehicles which have not already had the improved VANOS line replaced. Customers will be mailed letters notifying them of the Service Action shortly (copy of the customer letter is attached).
To minimize customer's inconvenience caused by this Service Action, you are being asked to pick-up (and deliver after repair), if necessary, the affected vehicle from customer's home, and provide appropriate alternative transportation.
Customers will be impressed when you return their cars cleaned inside and out and with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling and valet costs can be found in the Warranty portion of this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves M5 vehicles with S85 engines which were produced from the beginning of production up to 11/22/05.
This was released in December apparently as the 05 in the bulletin number denotes the year it was released. So i don't know what the fuck was up with that dealer, but the guy should have never been told to wait. :| My bet is that he went to a dealer owned by Autonation. Those guys fucking suck. My good friend was so fed up with Mercedes Benz being unable to adress the issues with his SL500 (yes this one.... http://www.motorworld.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2796 ) that he traded it in on a Lexus GS470 (or what ever the giant SUV is called) and has been astounded by the fantastic level of service.
He described it as head and shoulders above Mercedes Benz.

Mercedes has fallen so far back it's almost sad.
Lexus as always been a thorn in BMW's side in terms of CSI and reliability reports (early 7 series programming issues killed us) But i think the gap has closed somewhat by now.
